And so it begins.

And make no mistake.

There is big 💰💰💰 in Livestock.

The avian flu / H5N1 / bird flu, has been infecting cows for a couple weeks now. 🐄

And now a human... a dairy worker in Texas... has it.

Even though "it's MILD"... waits until you stop rolling your eyes the CDC put out new guidance. Yesterday.

Recommending lots of precautions. You know, like a Center for Disease Control SHOULD. You know, unless ...

Has it been proven that one cannot get infected with from non raw milk?

Because last I heard there have been no studies done.

Or am I wrong?

Because...

@justyourluck If 20% of the US milk supply has , then we've already effectively done the study, because we don't have a human pandemic. We would, if it were possible for pasteurized milk to be a significant vector.

Also, we’ve known for decades that pasteurization effectively kills influenza viruses. Pasteurization degrades both the protein capsules protecting viruses and their genetic material. What is in milk after pasteurization are fragments, not whole viruses.

The FDA seemed uncertain on Apr 25, a full 13 days AFTER "(raw)" was added to the CDC 's guidance:

"Additional testing is required to determine whether intact pathogen is still present and if it remains infectious"

Ya think??

Now, whether or not it has since been proven, the fact remains, they didn't yet know for sure and then played it down in the guidelines.

I find them all less than trustworthy. YMMV

  1. H5N1 is not the typical seasonal flu. It lives mostly in birds (hence "avian")

Curious if there's any SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence data for U.S. dairy cattle.

Thinking about deer (and cats) testing positive, in context of known consequence of immune senescence in humans.

We've been worried about crossing species barriers for decades. Was expected to happen eventually, even without covid in the mix.

Nonetheless, one wonders how much more susceptible are U.S. livestock to cross-species spillover & zoonoses than they would have been five years ago?

Since the outbreak of the flu seems to be spreading from Texas, are the people who called the “China Virus” calling this the “Texas Virus?” 🙂

A. The 21 yo college student with avian flu who died in , has been confirmed to have had the clade.

B. The H5N1 cattle outbreaks have increased, and have infected at least one human being in the US (confirmed).

Remember just last year when 99% of the world was pooh-poohing the idea that would jump from birds to mammals to humans?

Well, that was reckless. Let's just keep that kind of stupidity to a bare minimum, shall we.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am under the impression that viruses have never been demonstrated to be foodborne, and this stuff about pasteurizing milk from infected cows sounds like public health theater to calm the plebs

⚠️ Effective immediately, all dairy milking operations will be relocated inside elementary schools.

As we learned during COVID, there is no viral spread in schools.

That is all, and thank you.

We're Watching The Elite Panic in Real Time
by Jessica Wildfire

"The situation is evolving daily now. Farmers & ranchers are starting to show "bird flu-like symptoms," but they aren't getting tested. Nobody is forcing them, either. The USDA is inspecting ground beef, but only in states with outbreaks in dairy cows, & only because other countries started rejecting our beef. As one epidemiologist told Scientific American, "We don't have a good sense of the spread because testing is voluntary and certainly not being done in a systematic way."

Avian flu has been spreading for months in cattle, & none of our government institutions can tell us anything except, "Don't panic."

It's pathetic.

You can look at nuclear meltdowns, earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, & pandemics. Almost every single time, government authorities rush out to calm down the population. They censor accurate information. They put most of their emphasis on protecting the assets of the rich***."

If you live in TX and you're not aware of H5N1 (Avian Flu), you really need to get it on your radar ASAP.

Due to various political/social factors in this state that I won't need to explain to anyone who lives here, it is quite likely that in the event this goes human to human this state will become an epicenter.

Also, anyone anywhere feeding their pets a raw diet, REALLY think about shifting that. This virus is transmitted through raw meat/dairy.

Not to be a doomer, but this isn't even the question.

The question is whether enough people would even take the vaccines if we made them, and the answer is clearly: No.

Somewhat closely?

Who should I be following?

I have questions about the quality of research identifying temperature at which the virus is guaranteed to be killed.

Other questions too. Always with the questions.

Sitting with the fact that cattle industry has more power over whether humans in their employ get tested for than authorities do.

Hence preparing to launch wastewater dashboard for tracking spring and summer influenza surveillance...

To address absence of testing. Taking a page out of the handbook of better too-late-to-be-actionable data than no data.

Statistics, as always, are structural.

When H5N1 goes off the rails as it almost certainly will in the not-too-distant future, who do you want to be in charge of the country?

Competent leaders and scientists or a clown show. Because this stuff is not a joke.

A new unreviewed preprint is ringing alarm bells about the possibility of human to human transmission coming from cows. (Similar to the problem with pigs.) It's not good.

Huh. This is rather refreshing.

"We say we don’t believe that there are cases of H5 novel influenza circulating because we haven’t seen any evidence that would be suggestive of that. But until and unless we enhance our subtyping...

👉 we are basing that conclusion on negative implication rather than on affirmative data,” Shah said in the interview.
