Congressional Leaders Strike Deal on Final Spending Bill Ahead of #GovernmentShutdown
Lawmakers resolved disputes over #DHS funding, paving the way for an agreement. But they may still be unable to meet a Friday deadline to avert a brief partial #shutdown.
Earlier this month, lawmakers were able to negotiate & pass a 6-bill $460B spending package that just barely met the 1st deadline on Mar 8, & are now repeating the process — this time haggling over funding for more politically fraught agencies — before the 2nd deadline at the end of this week.

#Emmer (MN), the #House maj whip, was elected as the #GOP pick on a 5th ballot in an internal race that drew 9 #Republicans. It’s not clear, however, that he has enough support to be elected on the House floor. To prevail, Emmer would need a majority of the full chamber.
Emmer, who has been in #Congress since 2015, previously chaired the #National Republican Congressional Cmte — the House campaign arm — for 4 yrs.
#MikeJohnson served as a member of #Trump's #legal defense team during both the 2019 & 2020 impeachments.
#Johnson signed, along w/126 other #Republicans, an amicus brief in support of the BS #KenPaxton#SCOTUS case Texas v. Pennsylvania challenging President Joe #Biden’s victory (the Supreme Court declined to even hear the case).
Despite the fact that #MikeJohnson is opposed to both #SocialSecurity & #Medicare / #Medicaid, he represents one of the #poorest congressional districts in the nation. Acc/to an analysis of U.S. #Census data by the Center for American Progress, >160k people in #Louisiana’s 4th Congressional District were living in #poverty in 2022. That’s about 22% of all district residents.
Based on the quorum call, #MikeJohnson will need 215 to win.
Unlike in previous ballots, there are no real blocs of lawmakers to watch who have signaled their opposition in advance. Any #Republican defectors now would be a big surprise.
#House#Republicans, meeting behind closed doors, voted Friday by secret ballot for #Jordan to step aside following a 3rd vote on the House floor in which Jordan fell well short of a majority of the full chamber. The move leaves the Republican conference w/o a speaker nom >3 wks. Monday they’ll start the process over again.
The #House is expected to vote Tues afternoon on whether to make Rep #JimJordan its next speaker. Jordan, a #RightWing conservative agitator, who spews #ConspiracyTheories & #propaganda, is allied w/ Trump. He was chosen by fellow #HouseRepublicans on Fri to lead the House but must win a majority in the full chamber to take the gavel.
#Jordan, the “#Judiciary Cmte” “chair”, has mounted an aggressive pressure campaign to gain the support of >50 #Republican holdouts skeptical of his ability to lead. Jordan can only afford to lose 4 votes on the floor.
The #House is scheduled to meet at 12PM ET. There could be multiple rounds of voting. It’s 2 wks to the day since fmr #speaker#KevinMcCarthy was ousted. #Democrats plan to nominate House Minority Leader #HakeemJeffries.
A total of 20 #Republicans voted against #JimJordan on the first vote for #speaker, the exact same number who opposed #McCarthy on his first of 15 ballots. But it’s a very different group of 20 lawmakers, & it remains to be seen what Jordan can do to win them over.
