Kicking off the #WMO#polar and high mountain regions committee meeting in Oslo this morning. Long pre-meeting on #Antarctica yesterday to determine policy and strategy was pretty successful. Hoping it will get passed by full panel today.
WMO president Celeste Sauto giving us an online welcome. #PHORS24#ClimateDiary
WMO president is on board with Antarctica, Greenland and sea level rise!
#ClimateScientists often underestimate the importance of the WMO - it's not as visible to us as IPCC say and the focus has long been on #WeatherForecasts but #ClimateScience is very much built on the infrastructure of #weather - the in-situ observations, the satellites and the numerical models originally developed for forecasting. #ClimateDiary
Accompanying kids on trick or treat, I intervened overhearing a parent telling that some believed in #climatechange.
Me: It's not something you opt to believe. It is happening because humans emit #CO2.
He: We are in the middle of a glacial cycle.
Me: Orbital forcing of the last glacial maximum was similar to today’s. Man-made #co2emissions are warming climate. I study climate …
He (interrupts): Humans make only a bit of CO2, it's good for the trees.
I still find it shocking that people are educated enough to know about glacial cycles and #CO2 fertilization, but simultaneously are so deeply brainwashed by #sciencedenial propaganda.
This is despite many IPCC reports, #climatescientists increasingly engaging in outreach, and growing visibility of #climatechange in mass media.
welcome to the #Fediverse.
With your ambitious goals, I think you've come to the right place, as the scientific community is particularly strong here.
E.g., most of the #ClimateScientists have migrated here from the #BorgSite, also known as the #DeadBirdSite.
Things here work differently, so you might find these things useful to enjoy your presence here:
I opened bluesky account @ppmv since that seems to be where various climate scientists are going. Worth a try I guess! - someone kindly invited me; may be able to share invite links in a few weeks. My main interest is workable search function (and possibly retweets), for information-dense threads. Happy later summer, and keep your N95 masks ready everyone, next wave - EG.5 for now, possibly the next gen of BA.2.86 - are coming.
I'm not one, but it is one of my areas of interest.
Some months ago, there was a mass exodus here.
They rebuilt their community.
For instance, @ruth_mottram had over 10k of followers and is now back up over 7k. Not bad for a network, that had a fraction of the #DeadBirdSite. 😉
Numbers here are different. Much more relevant contacts.
@kathhayhoe has over 10k followers and already had a list of 3k...
@peterdutoit i think what #climatescientists should do now is a #greatresignation. Stop communicating completely, some may (and have already) consider a career change. As we all know, it’s #jobdone for them and there’s nothing left to say. In fact keeping on talking is detrimental to #climateaction, as it is used by #fossilfuels lobbies to keep on talking and do nothing. I think urgent action is now in #resilience, #community-led lofi #engineering solutions.
Some Twitters users: Find me on (insert platform).
Many Twitter users: Is this thing on? Shit, I need to get back to Twitter. Stay and Fight! Mastodon sucks!
Musk in (circle one: Dec/Jan/Feb/March): Fuck you.
Many Twitter users: I'm waiting for Bluesky. Stay and Fight. Mastodon sucks. Post is boring, but here's a screen shot of my Twitter post. Don't even know what the fediverse may be.
Musk in April: Welcome back for the Trump arraignment and fuck you.
Many Twitter users:
Musk in July: Fuck you.
Many Twitter users: I need a Bluesky invite!
Zuckerberg in July: And a fuck you, Elon.
Many Twitter users: Yes! We love it! Wait...who the fuck are these IG influencers? You know, this just isn't working for me. Oh, and the fediverse is a failure. You people suck the most.
@Hey_Beth “many Twitter users” - brilliant shorthand i’ve been needing!
I am curious to see what all the climate activist bigwigs will do - some set up briefly here but almost instantly returned, others just stayed on Twitter. It’s been a particularly disappointing dimension of this saga - more #ClimateScientists than activists came here. Will they now go to #Threads or stay on #Twitter, forever battling #ClimateDenial there?
#ClimateScientists#Academics: Rupert Read’s #ClimateMajority project is publishing a letter today, already signed by Peter Kalmus, James Dyke and others (I just signed it, too), asking governments to start being more honest about where we are at. You can sign it here:
Well, I am not thrilled about having to #migrate. I get the issues, but the timing sucks, and I sure wish it was possible just to keep the status quo. Not that anyone has asked for my .02...but since when has that ever stopped me from commenting?? 🙄 Stand by for migration antics fairly soon.
@JulieNye
You could check if the #ClimateScientists who left the #BorgSite this week as a group did so having a go-to instance or platform.
If they moved to #Calckey, that would be a pretty sound evidence.
So, it is possible for a group to make the collective decision to leave Twitter. Scientists "suffering insults and mass-spam are abandoning Twitter," and setting up shop on Mastodon.
"Glaciologist @Ruth_Mottram had more than 10,000 followers on Twitter but left in February and joined an alternative scientists' forum powered by Mastodon."
I just heard a rumor that many are making the mistake you trust #Elmo's #PayPal @ jack and flock to #Bluesky.
Would be a strategic mistake, one that the world cannot afford. We will need every month.
@ClimSciDefense was founded in 2011 in response to the growing number of attacks on #climatescientists. We continue the fight today by helping #climate, environmental, & other researchers. If you need our help, contact us at 646-801-0853 or lawyer@csldf.org.
Here's how to follow my list of 'scientists who do climate' here:
follow the list on Twitter
