FBI chief says Chinese have infiltrated critical US infrastructure
Chinese government-linked hackers have burrowed into US critical infrastructure and are waiting “for just the right moment to deal a devastating blow”, the director of the FBI, Christopher Wray, has warned.
An ongoing Chinese hacking campaign known as #Volt#Typhoon has successfully gained access to numerous American companies in telecommunications, energy, water and other critical sectors, with 23 pipeline operators targeted, Wray said.
China is developing the “ability to physically wreak havoc on our #critical#infrastructure at a time of its choosing”, Wray said at the 2024 Vanderbilt summit on modern conflict and emerging threats.
He added: “Its plan is to land low blows against civilian infrastructure to try to induce #panic.”
Wray said it was difficult to determine the intent of this cyber pre-positioning, which was aligned with China’s broader intent to deter the US from defending Taiwan.
China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory and has never renounced the use of force to bring the island under its control. Taiwan strongly objects to China’s sovereignty claims and says only the island’s people can decide their future.
Earlier this week, a Chinese ministry of foreign affairs (MFA) spokesperson said Volt Typhoon was in fact unrelated to China’s government, but was part of a criminal #ransomware group. #VoltTyphoon#hacking

The Dying Planet Weeps
Death metal fans are spoilt for choice these days. If you like to keep it filthy and old school, there are countless new bands decimating the target, and most of the old bands are still out there terrorizing the world too. If you prefer your death metal to sound vicious, technical and modern, there...

Do not update your Pixel 6 to Android 14, especially when you have multiple profiles. It stucks the memory (e.g. photos are not saved anymore), launches a factory reset, and prevents startup.
@paul_ipv6 posted about #project managers, fanciful #schedules, and his response involving a Magic 8-Ball. It reminded me of a story I've told about one place I worked. I've never told it here.
I was working at a small-to-medium-sized IT/#software company that had a few internal products, but mostly did outsourced R&D work for a behemoth company - one of the largest on the planet at the time.
It was classic #waterfall planning. HugeCo's R&D department would send us a high-level #spec.
From this, they would come up with the #critical#path, and then #extrapolate the project #completion date. They would then write it up, and send it to HugeCo for approval.
It would go like this: We receive the project brief on, say, 15 March. It takes a few weeks of talking and then doing this estimating to get the #proposal finished, say ready for presenting to HugeCo on 1 May. It would say "If we start work on 15 June, it will be done March 31".
For decades police/military/intel agencies/critical infrastructure in 120 nations relied on #TETRA#radio standard to #secure#critical#comms. But #Dutch researchers examined #secret#algorithms used in TETRA and found something startling - an intentional backdoor.
This and other problems the researchers found with TETRA would allow malicious actors to decrypt communications and also, in some cases, send malicious commands to critical infrastructure or send fake messages to police/military radios to disrupt their operations
TETRA uses 80-bit keys in its encryption algorithms, but the researchers found that one of these algorithms has a secret reduction feature that reduces the key to 32 bits - which the researchers were able to crack in less than 1 minute using standard laptop and just 4 ciphertexts
Once again, thanks to everyone who boosted and donated yesterday. Thanks to you, my doctor's appointment came out OK, and I was able to get everything squared away.
I am scheduled to get paid tonight, so there should be no issues at least until the end of the month, when my July COBRA medical premium payment of $580 comes due. I have been working to find another provider that doesn't charge nearly as much, but still to no avail.
I cherish the possibilities #AI brings, but the issues we create with it have arrived. #Teach everyone to engage with content that influences them carefully.
