Just dawned on me today that Google grouping pictures of people into their own albums on Google Photos means they're using facial recognition technology on my photos. Should've been obvious if I'd thought about it, but this is how techology sneaks up on us; making us think it's being helpful.

Perhaps the most dystopian story you will read this week. Cops used DNA to create a 3D model of a suspect's face... and then tried to run it through facial recognition software

: "Google is collecting the eyelid shape and skin tone of children via parent submitted videos, according to a project description online reviewed by 404 Media. Canadian tech conglomerate TELUS, which says it is working on Google’s behalf, is offering parents $50 to film their children wearing various props such as hats or sunglasses as part of the project, the description adds.

The project shows the methods some companies are using to build machine learning, artificial intelligence, or facial recognition datasets and products. Rather than scraping already existing images or analyzing previously collected material, TELUS, and by extension Google, is asking the public to contribute directly and get paid in return. Google told 404 Media the collection was part of the company’s efforts to verify users’ age.

“Eyelid shape. Skin tone. Video recording (without voice),” a section of the project terms and conditions listing the data collected reads. Another section says that TELUS’ customer—that is, Google—will collect “facial geometry.”"

Immigration halls in airports will be transformed with vastly upgraded e-gates that will use advanced facial recognition, negating the need for passengers to get their passport out of their bags.

At the same time, the number of traditional border control booths will fall away. The aim is for “frictionless travel” that will be achieved with an increased use of biometrics and the ETA."

The scraps the Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner, leaving facial recognition with less oversight.

The Bill also makes it easier for the police to reuse and share this data.

Using the DVLA database for biometric surveillance is even more terrifying in this context.

The police will be able to run facial recognition searches on a database containing images of Britain’s 50 million driving licence holders under a law change being quietly introduced by the government.

Should the police wish to put a name to an image collected on CCTV, or shared on social media, the legislation would provide them with the powers to search driving licence records for a match.
