Coming off a stressful weekend where I worked and worked and stayed up late, did not get outside at ALL. And now I'm entering a packed Monday where I also have multiple large deadlines.

So it was CRUCIAL to at least get in a hike, after dropping off my son at school.

Here's who I saw on my hike:
(About 2" long)

I used to think it was a strange kind of cicada or grasshopper - but it turned out the relatively high-pitched and steady trills we hear in late spring are the mating calls of American Toads (Anaxyrus americanus).

The same two roads after I disturbed them. The larger one on the left is facing the camera. Its face is lighter brown than the rest of its body, and the throat white and spotless. The right toad shows its warty, dark upper side

This is one of my all-time favourite . It has a bit of a cult following. Was it done weirdly on purpose, or by accident? Serious and hilarious at the same time. Get out the popcorn!

Only first spotted in 2011, the flea toad (Brachycephalus pulex) is now confirmed as the smallest frog AND overall vertebrate species in the world (found so far). The males are around 7.1 millimeters and females are 8.15 millimeters 🤯🐸

A juvenile eastern brown toad, spotted moving under a leaf in a creak bed near the Credit River. I do think the area has a whole colony of these.

It's always nice making new friends

openfields,

@AbandonedAmerica @dingodog19 It's a young toad, probably hatched this year. Identification is a little tricky. I'm not sure where you were, but for 2 eastern species there's a lengthy overview here:
https://www.herpingva.org/profiles/understanding-toad-identification

There are over 20 species of this genus in the country:

https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/64747-Anaxyrus

So....not Kermit the frog, but possibly Tyrone? Can't see his name tag.

They put Toadomination on Xbox! And for cheap!! Fans of roguelikes and/or twin stick shooters, do NOT sleep on this one. It's a BLAST- I played it some on Steam. Didn't think the day would come I'd see it on consoles! Another one I've wanted to try for a while, Cavity Busters, is now in the Microsoft store too.

Discovering other amazing looking roguelikes, too - The Lost and the Wicked, Replikator, Undergrave, The Excrawlers, Remedium: Sentinels, and Soul Shifter all look wild as hell.

New roguelikes ftw! (Now I gotta check the Nintendo eshop for all of these.)

Not what I went out into the garden to photograph, but since the dragonflies were playing hard to get 🐲🪰🤷‍♂️, this young common toad (Bufo bufo) gets the spotlight instead 🐸

And not the ideal set-up for a one-hand-held shot with a heavy DSLR either, but the toad was in a hurry to get into the undergrowth, so it is what is it 🙂

Today I'm writing about the first descriptions of toad sex.
