Can one import and use a follow list from one account to another regardless if an account is formally "moved" or not?
I started with an account on mstdn.ca... is it possible to "reactivate” that account after the transfer/move so that it no longer redirects to the 'new' account?
Had a serious database failure earlier due to cascading bad decisions. I started deleting a bunch of old data, rather than using #tootctl. This led to a bunch of errors in the #pgsql#docker container.
I moved the database into bare metal using a #nuc with 32GB of RAM and 4 cores. I'm going to use this for other services too, and it was on my roadmap of transition. #nextcloud will be moving to that as well.
I'm so happy about the fact I've managed to keep my server so fast after all this time. The performance was one of the main reasons I decided to start my own Mastodon server back in November 2022. Performance optimization is something I love to improve over time when it comes to servers and software.
New spam bot wave with multiple accounts - search for hashtag x4 to find them all. Some of them also include auth links to mastodon instances, looks like a phishing attempt or something.
:skull360: We have now successfully upgraded to v4.3.0-alpha.3+mementomods-2024-04-06 + Mastodon Bird UI 2.0.0rc36.
The branch is now synced and up-to-date and 115 commits ahead of the last version (2024-03-22).
This version contains some fixes to both Mastodon and Mastodon Bird UI.
I love running the newest version so I can test ahead in production for the upcoming Mastodon Bird UI versions. I do have my local instance with the production db, but it is far more fun this way and it feels good to have new things.
This "testing in live" is also because it's the perfect way to make sure that I can help contributing to Mastodon and spot bugs before they end up in the final rc, beta or stable versions. There most probably will be some minor bugs, but the earlier we tackle them the better.
As usual, please tell me about any strange things you may encounter with this Mastodon version. We're running bleeding edge after all.
I hope you enjoy your time here. Feel free to send me a message if you have anything in mind. :bunhdheart:
HIGHLY recommend Fediblock for user '@MKULTRADiamond' as they're tagging random users and spamming porn with no CW. Receipts attached in the screenshot.
Edit: The whole instance is Freeze Peach. Toss it in the trash.

True or False Mastodon Hosting Question that I'm looking for a definitive answer on?
If you already have a personal website at say:
johndoe.com
Then it is not possible to create a Mastodon server where your address would be:
@ john @ johndoe.com
Correct?
Mastodon is often compared to email, but if the above is correct, as I suspect it is because Mastodon is effectively a website, then this is important.
(Spaces added so it doesn't go somewhere unintentional :))
#mastoadmin Stel deze post. die gaat nu het #fediverse op. Mensen boosten, liken etc.
Als ik als eigenaar deze post verwijder is die dan ook op #fediverse weg?
So....I keep thinking about this Sharkey migration and as I see it, I have 2 options:
Attempt to re-migrate to beaware.live (my main domain) even though I briefly already had an instance there and risk potential federation issues.
Migrate to beaware.social (new domain) and redirect beaware.live to it which shouldn't cause issues.
In all honesty, if I could be almost positive I could do the first option with little or no federation issues, I'd rather go that route. BUT, if I can't get a definitive answer on if that would work or not, the second option is always there....any advice?
Does anyone have a very detailed and comprehensive guide on how to scale up a Mastodon server?
I'm pretty noobish to Linux but I can follow guides if they have commands and stuff. Though, the only guides I could find were very light on the commands for certain steps.
My Sidekiq has been getting backed up every now and then with thousands of jobs. Of course they eventually clear out but I'd like to just mitigate it by adding more processes or whatever because I'm not even using 50% of my server resources🤷♂️
Any help would be much appreciated.
PS. My server is currently backed up so if you reply to this, I probably won't see it for a bit.😬
I have decided, as a #selfhost with just two other people on my instance, that I'm going to limit threads.net following the example of @Jerry quoted below. I didn't know that you can “unlimit” specific accounts! This is an interesting option.
For other admins who might not be familiar, I am discovering this too for the first time:
When you ‘Limit' a domain (under Federation—>Add new domain block) and then click on that domain in the list it brings you to the screen in the first picture.
You can then see which accounts have been organically “stored" (i think of it more like being "noticed”) by the server. I’m excited that @stonekettle is there! I miss him!
Taken over another Mastodon instance and saved from shutdown. But: In the meantime, found two more instances that look suspiciously like they are about to have the plug pulled...
Unfortunately, the domain is then blocked by grabbers: a federated instance has grown links and is considered "valuable".
I wish there was a list for "instance exchange". Like people announce that they want to hand over, instead of being lost to the Fediverse. #MastoAdmin
