If you haven't heard, sadly, #ChirpSocial, one of the popular #ActivityPub “groups” platform, is shutting down “probably” on February 29th.

In an email they sent to admins, the owner and developer can no longer support https://chirp.social financially as they failed to find a new job after they were laid off by #Google last year.

So, if you have a Chirp.Social groups, either move to #Guppe (https://a.gup.pe) (as suggested by Chirp.Social), or if I may, to #FediaIO (https://fedia.io), an #Mbin [flagship] instance.

This reminds us the importance of having a built-in groups feature, and one where the groups feature actually federates.

Back in 2008, when the #Fediverse was born, we did have a built-in federated groups in #Laconica / #StatusNet (today known as #GNUsocial). We used bang (!) instead of at (@). A built-in groups feature is more stable as established instances can host them.

Today, we have #Friendica and #Hubzilla (as well as #Streams-based instances) to fill in that, as groups is a built-in feature in those software products. It's just a matter of finding an instance that's open to hosting groups for any topic for the ActivityPub protocol.

That said, any Friendica, Hubzilla, Streams-based instances you suggest for groups?

Just returned from an all-weather adventure in the White , ! Camped halfway up a mountain near a , then hiked up to the ridge the next morning, summiting three peaks before returning. , , dinner overlooking a valley at sunset, plus some heavy rain, hail, and being buried in the clouds while the ridge— this trip had it all and I had a blast!

Photo of hammock strung between two trees in the forest. A v-shaped tarp is immediately above the hammock to protect from rain. Leaves on trees are green, leaves on ground are reddish brown. The ground immediately below the hammock is nearly flat, the ground is sloping steeply up to the left and sloping steeply down to the right. Falling Waters Trail.
Photo of me standing at the summit of Mt Lafayette, facing the camera. Green moss-covered boulders in the foreground and background. Behind the background boulders, it is completely gray, illustrating the dense cloud cover that I was in. In fact, the background boulders are slightly masked by the clouds. I am wearing a blue rain jacket with a hood. A broad rim hat is on my head and pulled over the hood. I am also wearing black rain pants and have blue rain gloves. I am holding two trekking poles and have a white backpack on my back. I am smiling, enjoying having reached the highest point of my trip.
Photo of cloud covered mountain peak as viewed from a distance. Framing the peak in the foreground is a gray and green (moss) boulder on the left and green tree branches on the right. The overhead clouds are dark and gray. Old Bridle Path Trail, partway down the mountain and looking back at the ridge I had just hiked.

I wonder when we'll see custom domain #WebFinger in the #Fediverse / #ActivityPub ?

For example, I want to use:

  • @-live.youronly.one for my #Streams account
  • @-sns.youronly.one for my #Firefish account
  • @-photos.youronly.one for my #Pixelfed account
  • @-mblog.youronly.one for my #Mastodon account
  • @-reading.youronly.one for my #BookWyrm account

Ideally, even if I move to a new host/service, I can use the same WebFinger.

Sandy small stream with ripples on the bed. Bare mud and sand and young green vegetation on right side of photo, where things were clearly underwater recently. Powerlines and conifers and deciduous trees in background.

So… welcome to new users in the network!

If you are exploring the fediverse through the software, feel free to explore other platforms like to mention a few, for your usual “status updates” (and more) UI/UX.

If you want a platform more focused on photos and images, then there is . Or, you want bookshelves and tracking what you've read, or leaving reviews, there is .

But the beauty of it all, all of these are connected to the fediverse. You can follow any user regardless of which software they are using; AND regardless which server (domain name) they signed-up for.

For example, my accounts are:

Note #1: There are other instances. For example, https://calckey.world You can check out https://fedidb.org for more.

Note #2: You rarely need an account in other instances. I have other accounts because (1) I like to test; and (2) I use them for different purposes.

We even have fediverse hosted at https://chirp.social and https://a.gup.pe You can follow any group from your existing fediverse account and participate.

Again, welcome! Don't forget to post your / and update your profile with the tag !

In addition to falling asleep listening to the gurgling sounds of the , I love to have dinner down by the stream, enjoying the sight and sounds of the rushing water as the sun sets. Here is a nighttime pic (using my headlamp for light) of a stream I had dinner by last week. Wonderful!

Is there a #selfhosted equivalent to #googledocs? Specifically spreadsheets

We keep a fairly basic spreadsheet for our future #YTP #reaction #streams

Google Sheets isn't causing any problems YET but, I'm challenging myself to self-host as much as I can. I already killed Linktree, that was easy.

Scientists have found a ‘sleeping giant’ of environmental problems: Earth is getting saltier

#Salt used to de-ice roads is the single biggest source of salt in the U.S.

By Kasha Patel
October 31, 2023

"Human activities are making the globe saltier, specifically in our soils, fresh water and air, according to a study released Tuesday in the journal Nature Reviews Earth & Environment.

"The excess salt has already caused serious issues in freshwater supplies in recent decades. Saltier water led to brown tap water for months in Montgomery County, #Maryland. It also played a part in creating the #toxic lead-laden water in #FlintMichigan.

"Salt pollution isn’t some flashy threat to our existence — like, say, a meteor hitting Earth — but the issue is gravely overlooked and is a 'sleeping giant,' said Sujay Kaushal, lead author of the study. He said it might be the 'most boring but contemporary problem that we have.'

"Most people think of salt as the white specks we put in our food or the salt in oceans, chemically known as sodium chloride (NaCl). That sodium salt can also be found in detergents, other household products and more, but there are many different salts, including calcium, magnesium and other ions used in additional products — and they’re all increasing in places where they don’t normally occur.

"Over the past 50 years, salt ions have increased in #streams and #rivers as people have begun using and producing more salts, the study says. The team found that across the globe, about 2.5 billion acres of soil — an area about the size of the United States — have become saltier. Salt lakes are also drying up and sending saline dust into the air.

“'We use water for everything from growing crops to drinking to industrial processes to heating and cooling,' said Kaushal, a geologist at the University of Maryland. 'But when you have salt in the water, it affects all of those things … and it’s increasing.'"

"Mike Macgirvin, former dev lead on Friendica and Hubzilla, is taking a proactive stance on the new changes [to the Privacy Policy of Meta's new fediverse-facing DataFarm] with an update to his new project, Streams.

...The new enhancement examines remote fetch requests against a list of who should be allowed to access a resource. It may prove to be a viable protection against excessive data harvesting."

My trip earlier this month was one of my favorite types-- followed water almost to the summit of the mountain! 8 of the 9 miles (one-way) was either along a river or . So beautiful to watch and hear the sound of rushing water while . The enjoyment extended into the night-- eating by the stream and falling asleep listening to its sounds! White , .

Photo looking upstream of Black Brook. Photo taken while standing near the middle of stream and near water level. Water is seen rushing over the large tan boulders and toward the camera. The brook is relatively wide here. Green trees are shown along banks of this brook. This water crossing is at the site of my campsite. I ate dinner and breakfast at this crossing and slept in my hammock near it.
Photo looking across Black Brook as viewed from bank of brook. Water is shown rushing over a nearly straight line of large tan and brown boulders. Green trees on opposite side of brook. This photo taken at water crossing where my campsite was. I ate dinner and breakfast here, as well as slept in my hammock near here.
Photo looking upstream of Black Brook. This is the last water crossing before the summit of Bondcliff mountain. This is about one mile from the summit. The brook looks completely different than the other pics taken at a lower elevation. It is now quite steep and narrow and consists of a series of narrow waterfalls cascading down large tan boulders. Green trees line each side of the brook.
