"Today’s strike at the University of California challenges us to think big about what a labor movement is, and what it should do. [...] Graduate student employees at the University of California, in striking against UC-led police brutality and against their employers’ support for the war in Gaza, are [...] reminding us of the labor’s movement’s best self, when it links workplace issues at home, with civil liberties, with police repression, and with foreign policy and the fates of other working people abroad. That’s what solidarity looks like."
#TradeUnion stats are out this week, and there’s some new detail on membership density by age group, so I’ve been able to do some rough estimates of the time-varying age profile of the UK #union movement…
This isn’t quite the story we’re in the habit of telling ourselves!
We all know we have a problem bringing young workers into unions, right? Well… yes: density is indeed lowest among the youngest brackets of the workforce - that’s true (and for reasons not simply to do with age)…
"Starbucks has resumed bargaining with union leaders amid a fresh wave of organized stores after the world’s largest coffee chain agreed to open talks over labor agreements.
Starbucks has consistently denied violating labor laws. But the sheer volume of charges, rulings against them by administrative law judges and the labor board, and accounts from workers themselves detailing their experiences, has bolstered its reputation as an aggressive union buster.
“It was also a lesson that you can’t rely on the law alone,” said Kate Bronfenbrenner, director of Labor Education Research at Cornell’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations. “All the unfair labor practices that were filed … the fact is that Starbucks came to the table because the union did a comprehensive campaign, talked to investors, held red-cup days and did much more than just file unfair labor practices.”"
A #union representing thousands of workers at #SamsungElectronics has called the first strike at the South Korean technology giant since it was founded five and a half decades ago.
If you are in a labor Union (thinking US but any similar kind of union works too) whose membership is significantly larger than there are leadership roles, do you have some kind of shop steward role?
Specifically: stewards that are representatives of a small group of workers like a shift or a department or a wing. Do they have some kind of voting/additional power beyond basic legal rights like weingarten rights? Even if it is often unfilled, does the role exist?
Edit: also tell me about ur stewards/show me ur handbooks plz♥
Well, I guess the good news is that more rank 'n' file workers at UC Davis finally believe what @ucaccessnow and others were sharing all along - UC UAW leadership is anti-democratic and has its own agenda (which sometimes dovetails with UC admin agenda).
I hope they don't just react in the short-term but realize that until we can kick the Admin Caucus out of UAW, we will have to continue fighting. #Union#Labor
A self-styled aristocrat, his Russian girlfriend, retired military officers and a former judge have gone on trial in Frankfurt on charges of plotting to violently overthrow the German state.
The defendants were among nine alleged conspirators
– seven men and two women
– who were led into the purpose-built court flanked by armed police officers on Tuesday for what has been described as
the most important of three trials of suspected members of the anti-constitutional Reichsbürger scene.
Some of the defendants, variously dressed in hunting jackets, suits, hoodies and Burberry scarfs, waved and smiled at each other and chatted with their lawyers after being led to their seats.
One woman covered her face with a grey folder as cameras captured the defendants’ walking into court.
Heinrich XIII Prince Reuss, whose seat was marked with the sign “Prinz Reuss” and who is alleged to have been the group’s ringleader, appeared relaxed, nodding as his lawyer spoke to him.
Dressed in a dark jacket and trousers, navy pullover and open-necked shirt, the 72-year-old estate agent greeted fellow defendants before taking his place in court.
The group, referred to as the #Patriotic#Union, stands accused of high treason after plotting to storm the Reichstag.
It allegedly aimed to take MPs hostage and show a shackled chancellor, Olaf Scholz, on television in expectation of winning over ordinary Germans.
Had the alleged coup succeeded, Reuss was to have become Germany’s new chancellor.
The defendants were arrested in December 2022, when heavily armed forces stormed houses, flats, offices and a remote hunting lodge.
Investigators had been surveilling the group for months.
All defendants deny the charges.
The trial was slow to get under way on Tuesday after several lawyers lodged complaints to the judge, Jürgen Bonk, in which they expressed their objections to the proceedings taking place at all.
Outside the court, Roman von Alvensleben, a lawyer for Reuss, told journalists he objected to the fact that,
because there were three trials in separate locations,
“it is almost impossible to follow the cases properly and to cross reference them,” he said.
Across the three trials, a total of 26 defendants are in the dock for their alleged involvement in the plot.
"If we accept precarity in the video game industry, or any other industry, as immutable or just a quirk of the 'culture,' we all lose. Game development does not have a culture of instability. It has a culture of exploitation."
