PC world has an article here about whether you can use a VPN to circumvent the .

No. Just, no. Not , nor any other technology is a solution, because the problem is much deeper than that. The US banning TikTok is just the beginning, they will simply continue expanding of any content the government finds objectionable. We may soon find governments like the US passing legislation that running an server of any kind is illegal "terrorist activity" before long, and all NATO countries will follow suit (they must, or else risk losing NATO membership).

And of course the stated reason for the US blocking whole portions of the Internet is for "cypersecurity" reasons. Anyone with half a brain knows the real reason is to try to prevent sharing knowledge across borders, because that is the real threat to the politicians and their bosses.

It is really no different than what countries like China does with their Great Firewall, or what Iran does whitelisting only certain blocks of the Internet that exists outside of their borders, also for "cybersecurity" reasons. Of course the US government will continue to cite censorship of free speech as a reason that countries like China or Iran are inherently evil. This deranged political double-speak is the norm nowadays, as "antisemitism" is used as a justification to arrest Jewish people who protest war at their universities, but I digress.

So my plan with my current provider expires soon and I’m thinking of moving to . I like the idea of getting, as part of the plan, extras such as Proton mail - get some control and over my email accounts (away from Gmail). However, I am a little worried that if I create multiple email addresses I essentially lock myself into Proton’s paid plan… Losing email addresses would be an unnecessary nightmare to manage 🤔
Has anyone else switched to Proton to manage their VPN & emails?

Please be super careful using public wi-fi, even with a VPN. Zero day in existence for over 20 YEARS was announced impacting VPN use with regards to rogue or compromised DHCP servers on the LAN, which allows redirection of VPN traffic. If you can avoid public network use (i.e. using a cell service/hotspot instead of a public wifi network in a cafe, store, etc.), just avoid it. https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/05/novel-attack-against-virtually-all-vpn-apps-neuters-their-entire-purpose/?comments=1&comments-page=1

Nearly all VPNs are reportedly affected by this 22+ year old vulnerability per researchers at Leviathan. https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/05/novel-attack-against-virtually-all-vpn-apps-neuters-their-entire-purpose/

I sent my preferred #VPN service in ProtonVPN (at @protonprivacy) an email about this and hope they respond to this serious claim. You should do the same for your preferred service (consumer, enterprise, self hosted too).

Big #VPN companies are churning out bullshit "security advice" on an industrial scale.

It's a marketing funnel that targets those seeking help.

And then misinforms them.

I wish it stopped there

The nonsense makes its way to victims of spyware, where misinformation can have life, death and liberty impacting consequences.

I want to build / get a travel router / hardware VPN which connects to a network wirelessly or via RJ-45 and creates a new Wi-Fi (& maybe a wired connection to the new network) to which I can connect my devices and everything gets tunneled either through Mullvad or through my home network. Maybe it can even throw the traffic into Pi-hole before tunneling.
What hardware would I need? (As compact, as cheap-ish and as efficient as possible)

Once more, it is a good time to be a Linux users.

Why, you ask?

Microsoft has pushed out an update that breaks VPN access in Windows 10 and 11. This after the fact that we all learned Windows 11 will have ads, plus Microsoft may try to shame users with a watermark for those who do not accept their recommended settings or use their latest recommend hardware.

I work, take calls, bank, stream movies, stream music, edit documents, photos, videos, print, game, shop, and I do so ad free, watermark free, activation free, while safely and securely using an optional VPN, and I do this all on Linux (Ultramarine Linux, KDE spin).
