As always with 3D printing, it's important to get the 1st layer right for the success of the print. Printing a stack in beech wood this time.

First time I had to use the multi function table saw hold down jig. It really expands the possibilities and increases security for certain cuts with the table saw.

Anyone have any idea what the best sort of paint would be for a woodern gun handle.. Basically something with the following features:

  1. appropriate for wood
  2. exceptionally good wear resistance (since ill use it a lot)
  3. not a stain, should be in bright colors
  4. if needed should be compatible with a clear over coat to "seal" it

First "real" project on my old Pfaff 30 treadle sewing machine 1: a tool roll for my recently engraved 2 Veritas plough plane blades. Thick canvas, lined with leather on the inside, sewn with a nice thick thread, and a snap button for the strap. I'm still thinking of waxing the canvas, but it's already useable.

(and does this still count as if it's foot-powered…? 🤔)

open tool roll. After lining the green canvas with the dark brown leather, the bottom part is simply folded up and sewn together to create the pockets in which the plane blades sit. The leather is folded into a rolled hem on the front edge of the pocket. Then the top third folds down to protect the blades. Everything is sewn with thick white thread.

🙋 Do any friends who have a small shop have recommendations for a Portable Folding Work Table/Sawhorse?

From reading review websites, I see a few recommendations for this "Worx Pegasus 2-in-1 Folding Work Table & Sawhorse".

https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B01HREBZ3M

I have a workbench, but I need something I can use with my circular saw and compound miter saw to cut 2x4s and eventually do larger projects.

In theory, I will eventually need another sawhorse.

Any thoughts on the Robert Sorby "firmer" chisels for use in cutting mortises? They are advertised as being good for mortising, but seem less hefty than typical mortising chisels.

I need to take some photos and varnish the bottom but it’s done! Line work all hand burned onto the wood, mostly freehand. Hand painted colours. I had fun!

Video of a black wooden box with decorative sides each showing a gold rimmed window, through the windows are colourful mushrooms on a blue gradient background.

First half sheet run. Needed a wood cart. So here we go. Can handle sheets in the back and a lot of misc. in front. Just need to add the last dowels but should work well. Took longer getting the pocket holes and wheels on than cutting the sheets down. 😂

Dragged the rack back down to the basement (note the muddy castors). UPSs hiding down the back now along with a PDU rack mounted.

The servers are going to hang out in the house for just a little while longer. I have a 3 way comparison video to shoot between the Rosewill LSV4500U, HL15 and Sliger CX4712 before those boxes get shipped back to the basement again.

Added a coat of linseed oil to the top as well. Smooooov.

I fell off the wagon... or am I back on my BS?

Either way, I'm making another board.

derek,
@derek@social.coop avatar

For a hot minute I thought I'd decorate the margins with an illustrative scene with wire inlay! Big ambitions to do a series of illustrations with copper inlay.

I've landed on much a simpler geometric pattern. More doable.

a simple set of overlapping squares and leaves in copper inlay

derek,
@derek@social.coop avatar

Drew the inlay pattern on the opposide side of the board (this time using the speed square... yay for having those right angles handy).

You know, woodworking has made me appreciate the real-world implications of my high school class.

There's something to be said for proofs - if you have a shape, and you know the dimensions of some of those shapes, you can also know the angles of the shape, and the dimensions of other sides.

A board with the inlay patterns visible on both sides.

derek,
@derek@social.coop avatar

Omg. On the last element of my wire inlay project I figured out how to do inlay correctly. Look at the difference!

Moving forward (if I do more inlay) I'm going to save so much glue, prevent so much damage to the wood!

A wire inlay leaf. Rough lines, noticeable damage to wood, lots of dried glue.

derek,
@derek@social.coop avatar

Cue the sad trumpets. Major bummer.

I honestly have no idea why this is happening. Did I over sand the wood close up all the pores?
