"Canva, the high-flying Australian design and visual communication startup, announced today it was acquiring Affinity (formerly Serif), a creative tools company based in the U.K. Bloomberg reported that the deal was worth several hundred million pounds (approximately $380 million U.S.), and the company confirmed to TechCrunch that the number was accurate."
Actually, I did not see a single positive reaction anywhere. Not on the forum, not on Mastodon, not in the comments of their YouTube video. I quickly checked the bird site, too. And a few news sites with comments. Not one happy user to be seen.
The tone is: Shit! This means subscription. Once it is subscription, there is no reason not to use Adobe.
Affinity has been bought by Canva, to compete with Adobe.
It was of course a matter of time before Affinity would outgrow its status of sympathetic small-scale Adobe alternative, and be sold for large proceeds.
Canva is into AI. Hopefully Affinity will get some useful AI-powered image processing tools, like upscalers and denoisers, but Canva will probably add generative shit and introduce subscriptions sooner or later.
Photoscape X, a surprisingly versatile image editor and viewer. I use it a lot. It's free, and you can support the developer with a useful in-app purchase:
@inkscape isn't just a beauty and powerful application for #artists, but with extensions like #gCODEtools and #LinuxCNC it becomes a free & open hub for #CAD & #CAM projects. It only requires the investment of a @Raspberry_Pi 5 to set this up. Amazing that it works so much better than #Adobe#Illustrator while cheaper as an iMac (including the CNC machine), isn't it?
#Adobe FINALLY updates the UI framework so you can SEE what choice is selected without any guesswork. It was THE worst set of UI widgets I've ever seen, going against all cognitive theory of recognizing objects from backgrounds. With possible destructive consequences like with the Delete command in Premiere that deletes files, without Undo.
While I'm kinda happy #Adobe's purchase of #Figma didn't go through (I like that there's some competition) I do think there's an opportunity for Adobe to build a Figma-like application that leans more heavily towards graphic design and less toward web/digital product design. Give us Illustrator-class vector tools, better PDF exporting, awareness of inks, etc.
Dark patterns galore: Lowering your #adobe licenses is no problem, but if you want to lower them to 0 then all of a sudden you'll have to go through chat support 🙄
My Adobe Creative Cloud plan was about to increase to over $60/mo and my renewal date is in a week - so I went to cancel it. #Adobe immediately offered me $20 off the monthly subscription price. I still opted to cancel my plan (which I've had since 2017). Then they offered it to me for $30 less - so I took that deal.
Why do #tech companies treat their loyal customers this way? It's so dumb.
Want a good deal on subscription #software? Go break up with them and they'll sweeten the deal.
This is so much better than our first #videoTest, and more what I had in mind when it comes to our #vectorArt in the framework of Inkscape #tutorials.
Hopefully, #MastoArt & #FediArt followers are more interested in #Inkscape, this time. Of course that's among our main reasons to make videos in the first place, not just selfish promotion. Every time one of our videos will turn an #Adobe#Illustrator user into an @inkscape artist, we are promoting #FreeSoftware successfully.
Today Medea Benjamin spoke to lobbyists and profiteers of genocide at Capitol Hill, together with Code Pink.
How AIPAC replied in their own words to uncomfortable questions is telling so much more than Stanfords Prison Experiment data ever could, if accomplished.
Obviously, the fringe right autocratic #Nethanyahu and his zionist racist apartheid #regime of Israel have benefits of Qui Bono, not US citizens, nor the population of Palestine.
#AIPAC isn't even registered as foreign agents while spending a budget of 100 Million dollars to bribe US politicians annually. https://www.aljazeera.com/program/investigations/2017/1/10/the-lobby-young-friends-of-israel-part-1/
That's how easy it is to swing US votes in the interest of zionist Israel, and kind of a "anti-semitic conspiracy theory" for very well uneducated people, too. If this system ever was a Democracy is another question, but without a doubt it's not in a state of corruption like that.
If a computer is corrupted like that, it's wise to replace MS Windows. Better get rid of it's commercial tools and malicious routines with a Free GNU Operating System aka Linux. Sometimes it's necessary to replace an old harddisk with SSD, but each of those computers can run another decade with Free Software. That's good for our environment and what most of our gfkDSGN artists are working on.
Be careful: fake emails are circulating in the name of Free/Libre and Open Source projects. Below, an email received by @kdenlive that the official team does not recognize. Be vigilant, these are no doubt scams.
