Impressions of a bee. (Native Australian Bees)

I think I want to stylize these further? I think. I'm still considering. I got the watercolour vibe I was after. But I think I was hyper vigilant about making the anatomy of each bee stand out that I kind of lost a lot of the initial shapes I had.

Getting round to posting some of the zillions of bug photos I've taken (h/t to @BjornIdle and @loren for the prompting!)

Pesticides: European experts propose ways to better assess risks for bees

A slow race is coming to an end. Nearly 30 years after the first reports of honeybee colony collapse, following the arrival of neonicotinoids in the fields, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has just adopted a new guidance document designed to improve the risk assessment of agricultural pesticides on honeybees, solitary bees and bumblebees.

We have a paradise in our back yard. Unfortunately, the and (who are nesting in the leaves underneath) had fled the scene by the time I got my camera, but other pollinators were buzzing around. In addition to the and , we also have a blooming crab tree nearby, and some 100-year old (that smell amazing), which have just started blooming.

Light purple lilac flowers (which smell amazing), just starting to bloom.

My fellow forest gardener Chris captured these photos of in a bee hotel a couple of weeks ago. It was a cold day and they huddled together!

Seven blue banded bees checked into the hotel. The little bee at the top of the twig is a female.

If you’re in the PDX or SW Wash areas, make the time to visit the Camassia Nature Preserve. It’s a tiny hidden gem in West Linn (park at the high school in off hours).

For a few weeks a year, this beautifully restored area bursts with native blooms. Pics taken 5/7/23

Bee swarm caught and boxed and wrapped to go to a hive in my apiary. Fingers crossed they are still there tomorrow. Just given them a syrup feed in their new hive.

Did you know we froze and stockpiled honeybee sperm? I didn't.

Meaning no shade at all to this study, its authors, or anyone doing this work - they didn't create the situation we're in. But our dependence on one species, Apis mellifera, to pollinate so much of our food crops is a huge food security risk. Diverse native pollinator communities can be much more resilient, if we just let them.

Spring is the time for the wonderful, pink Sargents Cherry blossoms and with that you get the fuzzy wanting the pollen or nectar. This one was having a great time buzzing from one blossom to another.

It's Monday, so I'm starting new posts for my daily drawings.

Today, I'm playing with a bit of color gradient, starting in the center of these branches. It's very subtle, though.

Here's an in-progress photo

Experimenting with drawing bees today. I don't want them to be too realistic, but also not too abstract. Still haven't gotten the wings right. It's work in progress.

Experimenting again with an abstract bee motif today.

These are a work-in-progress, intentionally abstract, and not illustrations.
