Abuse of the #DMA’s ‘#gatekeeper’ concept: "The 🇪🇺 Commission set a dangerous precedent with the #DataAct, which now risks spilling over into other regulations – such as new rules on financial data access #FiDA."
At last! Our #KubeCon talk "Open Policy Agent — Intro and Deep Dive" is now up on YouTube 😃 I can't stand hearing / watching myself talk, but hopefully you won't feel the same aversion. Covering an intro to the project, some updates, a roadmap, and much more. Check it out!
When an #EU user installs a third-party app store with #iOS 17.4 and travel outside the EU "for a longer period of time", that app store will stop working.
So they will stop getting updates. From the oh-we're-so-secure phone company. Seriously #WTF Apple.
@owa I have an irrelevant question, and sorry it's super pedantic, but I'm confused about how the word #gatekeeper gets used in the #DMA. In legal docs it often sounds like big tech co's are gatekeepers, which makes sense to me: they're "keeping" the "gates" of their platforms. But in the press specific platforms and services are referred to as gatekeepers, and I see you're doing that in this report too.
Is "gatekeeper" the actual legal designation for iOS itself, or is it just shorthand here to express that Apple is the gatekeeper because the i[Pad]OS platform qualifies?
In my work with #FDroid I've discussed our work with gov regulators for South Africa, UK, EU and Japan as well as competition litigators from multiple US States and the EU. From this, I'm starting to see a picture of #Apple's and #Google's semi-related strategies of making "sideloading" (installing apps outside of their #gatekeeper control) look bad as a way to keep their monopolies in the face of #DMA and other regulatory actions. I'm still looking for data about the actual real world risks 1/
I — an #Android developer that is interested in #multiplatform development via #KMP — am looking forward to a future where I can easily sideload my small & free apps on iOS devices & distribute them through other stores w/o having to pay 100USD/year for an Apple dev account that I otherwise don't need.
It’s been a wonderful couple of days butterfly spotting #InMyGarden with nine different species visiting us. Newest arrivals are Pararge Aegeria - Speckled Wood - flitting in and out of the shade. And my favourite Pyronia tithonus - the Gatekeeper - with its double eyespots patrolling the hedges in the firey heat of the summer. Pyrotechnic… #GateKeeper#butterflies#SaveButterflies#ButterflyConservation#lepidoptery
Not sure the panel recording will be public, so here are my notes in a long 🧵 thread:
▶️ The DSA is rather good at respecting #freedom of expression, it gives platforms some new tools to carefully consider and improve their moderation practices and users to defend their rights. [1/8]
▶️ The real problem is the staggering dependency of online #journalism on corporate social media platforms to reach their audience and the loss of massive amounts of ad revenue that is sucked up by #adtech middlemen for supposedly well-targeted #tracking#advertising. It’s the classic #gatekeeper problem: The harms inflicted by these gatekeepers to our attention can be directly measured by the loss in independence of—and income for—the very same #FreePress that #EMFA is supposed to protect.
