A solution for the nightmare 's activation lock has created:

  1. Partnered ewaste vendor requests unlock
  2. Apple emails iTunes account
  3. Owner releases device, or if no response, 90 day countdown starts
  4. Still no response? Device is auto unlocked.

I wish would make a new Time Capsule device as an offline companion of . It would keep a local copy of your whole iCloud and your Apple devices would use local copies if internet is slow or gone. That would be great for iCloud dependant people.

Turn THIS on if you use

Privacy is something we’ve come to immediately associate with Apple. But your iCloud is probably NOT as private as you think.

Last year, Apple added for iCloud backups, with a tool called

This setting means that your documents, photos, and other personal information in iCloud are kept private and out of the reach of even Apple itself.

BUT, this setting is NOT turned on by default.

Adding myself to the list of people who were locked out of their iCloud accounts overnight yesterday morning.

It was a quick reset and I had my devices on me, but kinda annoying.

On the plus side, I did change a password I’ve been meaning to for a long time. So silver lining and all.

Rephrasing my question:

If I turn off iCloud (say, I stop paying the monthly fee), I assume I will lose access to all files in the cloud but NOT downloaded to my Mac.

Is there a way to backup ALL my Mac's files, both on device and in the cloud?

Happy to buy a large enough drive. My concern is that Time Machine only backs up what's on my device, depends on iCloud to back up the cloud stuff.

If I replace my old Mac with a new one, will EVERY photo from that machine automatically migrate to the new one?

Will EVERY music file in my library (including ripped CDs) make it over?

Will the new machine automatically become the master database for music/photos? Is there a way to verify this?

Is there any step to take to eliminate the risk of losing music/photos from the move? I've got "optimize Mac storage" enabled.

Advice?

Recently I was adjusting my son’s parental control on his tablet, and thought ya know I guess I really should just allow my iCloud.com email (that I don’t really use) to make me more findable for messsages and FaceTime.

Not even 47 hours later I r had four scams texted to me and randomly added to some crazy group. Uh no. We’l just leave that stupid thing turned off now. Yikes.

"Is 128GB Enough iPhone Storage?"

128GB is the new entry level memory tier that came with the iPhone 15. Is it enough?

Interesting (and relatively short) read, worth a look at the pricing of Apple's upper tier iCloud storage plans.

Did you know there was a $59.99/month 12TB plan?

Plain to see where Apple is going with this. Take more hi-res photos, you'll never run out of storage!

Apple can see your data

By default, can see your photos, and Messages backups, notes, reminders, voice memos, and more.

You can, however, turn on end-to-end encryption by enabling Advanced Data Protection.

Look on the bright side: if gets broken up, maybe will finally get torn away from Eddie Cue and put in the hands of someone who actually gives a shit about it.

And no, I’m not interesting in a discussion if you think Cue has been anything but disastrous for one of Apple’s most fundamental and essential services.

"Apple was secretly sharing data with law enforcement agencies and left a security backdoor [in iPhones] that may have been exploited by the Chinese government for political repression."

How to protect your privacy on iPhone

  1. Turn on "Advanced Data Protection"
  2. Turn off iCloud services for apps that don't need it like Mail and Calendar
  3. Turn off Location Services for apps that don't need it

Received a new or scam email. I've never had an account or product or account. Ever.

"Your iCloud storage has reached its limit. All updates to photos, videos, and iCloud Drive have been halted. Immediate action is required to prevent data loss."

Be careful out there if you do have an iCloud account and get these emails.

Looking at the code of the email, outbound links going to 420round dot com.

Since I was working on Photo Stream at the time, I remember when the decision was made to budget 5 GB to each device sold for iCloud storage (excluding Photo Stream storage—that was free). We nodded along since it was only for email, contacts, and calendar at the time.

Then Apple launched with iCloud backup, and the free tier stayed at 5 GB.

Then Apple added iCloud photos, and…still 5 GB.

We’re now a decade later and…it’s still 5 GB. It’s damn near comedic at this point.

I recently tried to share a calendar tied to an iCloud account with someone who doesn’t use Apple products. They weren’t able to subscribe. We didn’t dive into full-on troubleshoot and solution mode.

Is there some voodoo that needs to happen?

  1. Create calendar
  2. Share calendar (results in email with link)
  3. Recipient follows link…

They received an error saying they couldn’t subscribe to the calendar.

I feel like I was able to do this before without problem.

What’s the point in having the option to change the default fucking mail app then? 😡

@kev I'd say you gave yourself the answer when you're mentioning "Apple" ...

#Apple is only fun when you're using their systems (it's not actually owned by the consumers paying premium prices) as Apple intents and, thus, give them all your data.

Think about that and you'll find lots of decisions/restrictions/politics supporting that notion. 😉

It turns out that "If you don't pay for it, you're the product" is not the only option to be the product after all. 🤷

After my (for years unused and forgotten) AppleID was compromised (thanks foodora -.-' This is why I use a password manager now...), I drew a GDPR data dump before (planning to) delete it.

Thing is: Under logins, i get the recent login dates i expect. However, the IP field corresponds to the IPs where I initially setup the account (Now disfunc'ed NAT GW of old University lab)...

Which is a bit... odd, no? Somebody have ideas?
