We started this account less than 6 months ago. It's going pretty well – thanks to you: 4.2k followers, lots of interactions, questions, and comments. 🎉
A couple of weeks ago, the European Broadcasting Union (#EBU) asked us to write a guest article about our experience with #Mastodon / the #Fediverse, explain the basics, and point out the advantages. :mastodon:
Challenge accepted. 👍
So here's the finished post by @lxplm, hot off the #blog press. ⌨️
I've just seen a documentary about this amazing place and I'm sure, this will be my next travel destination. Have any of you been there?
"Oodi has become an example of what an inclusive, open urban space can be. The library was designed with the input from and participation of city residents, and the people have really taken a shine to Oodi."
Ads for SUVs " breaching social responsibility in an environmental context."
"Toyota SUV adverts banned in UK on environmental grounds. Advertising Standards Authority says Hilux poster and video condone driving that disregards ‘impact on nature’. Advertising for SUVs is pushing up demand for massive gas-guzzling, highly polluting cars in urban environments, just when we want streets that are safer and cleaner and an [accessible] low carbon transport system,” Wignall said, adding that the situation was similar for flights, meat and dairy."
Do you like trains and bikes and sidewalks and parks and public space and making things better for humans instead of SUVs? Have I got some #FollowFriday for you!
@hans@th oh and I did see @BjornW and @geertjan but they must have been busy or did not think about posting using the #impaktfestival tag. It was through cooperation with @publicspaces that Chelsea was there though (she doesn’t seem to be using the Fediverse yet).
I sometimes hear people make fun of the fact that Berlin has a huge empty field right in its core area where Tempelhof airport used to operate which is now a public park and left almost entirely unchanged, runways and all.
They talk about it as if it's an example of the city's inability to do something "useful" with this land. And what they mean is build stuff on it.
But just the way it is, it is hugely popular among the people of Berlin, it's a unique space where the sheer size of it enables anyone to basically do whatever without annoying anyone else. Even at peak times like Saturday afternoon, it still doesn't feel crowded and the further away from the edges you go the emptier it gets.
It refuses any commercial "usefulness" and instead gives people space to use how they see fit. It's absolutely beautiful.
@esther love to hear voices that question unbridled capitalism’s cult-thinking. We need more #publicspaces for people to exist and not have to pay money to be there.
A bit latter today (June 27th) at 13:00, at the PublicSpaces conference, Raoul Kramer (Program Manager for UBports Foundation), will be taking part in panel discussion on the subject of: «A phone without Apple or Google? It's possible!»
#BigTech corporations like #Meta are using targeted commercial advertising for #lobbying EU officials in strategically selected subway stations to sell their #metaverse crap as something desirable.
This is possible because we accepted to plaster our precious #publicspaces with #advertising space in exchange for a few bucks for our local public budget.
I've been hearing about this idea that your home is your first place, work or school is your second place, and that there are amazing benefits to having a third place that is community space for socializing and does not emphasize commerce. This could be a church, a barber shop, a library, a rec center, a park, etc.
I do not have a third place, and apparently I am not alone. Since the US has been and continues to be increasingly car-dependent, especially in the suburbs, and community spaces are disappearing and giving way to commercial properties, we don't have many third places left here.
The Fediverse is probably the closest thing many of us here have to a third place, but research has shown that it's just not the same. Online communities are amazing, but they can't replace the mental benefits one gets from an IRL third place.
So what's up guys? Do you have a third place? If so, what is it? How has it improved your life or where do you think you might be without it? I'm really curious to hear about your experience.
