Nothing dismays me more in academia than my colleagues excusing themselves from the world because they have internalized their job as their identity, and exist in a separate domain from everyone else. every time I knock on doors with my union I get someone, sometimes angrily, wondering what any of this has to do with them - they're here to just do science.

Wowza. Booking a Lyft right now to downtown shows $75. Yellow Cab App shows $30-40. Am gonna give the new app a whirl and cross my fingers that the fare isn't ridiculous with a meter. (One thing I don't love about cabs.)

Last time I took a cab from the airport, it was fully $20 less than the same trip had been a week earlier with Lyft. The rideshare apps are seeming like no longer such a good deal...

Is there a exchange community or group on Mastodon?

I have some chives and green onions that are going to seeds and I will have more seeds than I need.

Of course, there is our local free seeds and plants library but I would prefer to use mastodon as my main seeds resource.

Thoughts about writing action scenes. I feel like I don't have the brain power to wrap my mind around all the action, who goes where, who does what?

I'm wondering if this is related to my extra spicy neurodivergence.

Does anyone have any tips or tools they use? Wonder if I need to dig out my D&D miniatures?

Thoughts my fellow neurodivergent authors?

Take a look at some of the dance choreography techniques used in improvising physical theatre.

Looking at fight choreography gives a better idea about the sense of space that your characters are operating within.

Also worth looking at Tempo from Chess:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempo_(chess)

Some of the Shaw Bros. films have some really good examples of applying the principles of Tai Chi to whole battlefields. :D

BillySmith,
@BillySmith@social.coop avatar

@KitMuse @bookstodon @actuallyautistic @neurodiversity

Also worth looking at some examples from Theatre.

I saw some of Annouchka Bayley's early directing work, where she transformed Medea as a single-person performance, to a duo performance, all the way up to a full opera troupe.

Same story, same timeline of events, but completely different flavours of expression when working on a different scales. :D

BillySmith,
@BillySmith@social.coop avatar

@KitMuse @bookstodon @actuallyautistic @neurodiversity

Another approach is to use a specific piece of music as the notional soundtrack, which will define the rhythm of the action.

There's some really nice examples to be found with Kill Six Billion Demons, where the author mentions the pieces of music in the hover-text attached to the pictures. :D

There's another good example in The Secret World :D

https://www.secretworldlegends.com/

It's an early and ongoing experiment in machinima that stands out as being one of the few MMO's that was publicly LBTQ+ friendly. :D

It is known from interviews that some of the writers are fans of @cstross as is evidenced by the world-building for the main story arc. :D

The game mechanics are similar to most tactical MMORPG's, but it's the quality of the storytelling that stands out. :D

In the first section that you are sent to explore, the player is acting as an investigator/cleaner in an HP Lovecraft story. :D

What is also interesting from the pov of gameplay, is that you can only make some of the choices once in the main story arc. :D

Want to make different choices, you have to start again with a new character. :D

Quite often on the Fediverse – more often on other social networks – I find people talking about how things were so much better years ago.

And I’m telling you this is a trap. Don’t fall for it. Yesteryear is not better than now, it just feels that way because it’s over.

Progress exists. It’s important that we all acknowledge how things are better. More importantly, you are alive – enjoy this moment.

I got a reject on Turkey residence permit application. I'll lodge an appeal, but chances are very low, so my plan B is to go to Georgia than to Armenia to apply for Spain Schengen visa.

If somebody knows any conferences, summer schools or other events I can contribute to and get an invite to support my visa application with, let me know, please.

P.S. Spain Schengen in Armenia is an only option to apply for Schengen visa available without residence permit I know at the moment.

It's also worth looking at the E-Residency in Estonia.

https://www.e-resident.gov.ee/become-an-e-resident/

Working via this route would qualify you as an EU-based contractor, so remote work would become available.

In theory, you could parlay that work into being resident in an EU country, as you could show that were already working within the EU.

Though I don't know anyone who has tried this method, but it's another potential route towards EU residency.

The early Proofs-Of-Concept for hydrocarbon manufacturing in the laboratory took place in the late 1890's/early-1900's, but electricity was more expensive to generate then. :D
