This AI revolution sucks. I was promised that my body would be plugged into a computer network where I could live out my dreams, and instead all that's happening is people are losing their jobs. Stack Overflow just fired 28% of it's staff and Ars Technica is laying the blame at competition from ChatGPT.

In a story that's actually all too common, a woman was denied medical care because she might get pregnant. The care in question is a medication for the treatment of cluster headaches that are so severe they sometimes cause her to pass out. But the doctor said he wouldn't even tell her the name of the medication because it could cause birth defects IF she got pregnant, something she has no intention of doing.

In fact, my housemate is in a similar situation. They need a hysterectomy for reasons I won't go into, but their doctor is denying them the surgery because they might change their mind about having kids at some point years from now. This leaves them with a daily condition that is painful, and makes being out of the house for extended periods of time difficult.

We need to firmly establish in US law that people have an absolute right to control their bodies.

"Dems must be more moderate to win over voters."

Okay lets go with that theory:
•A living wage is moderate—a poverty wage is extreme.
•Healthcare for all is moderate—denying care is extreme.
•Climate justice is moderate—denying climate science is extreme.

Reject GOP Framing. Vote GOP Out.

ErisCaffee,
@ErisCaffee@masto.ai avatar

@QasimRashid Dems are already moderate. If they get "more moderate" then they are actually just getting conservative.

And if that happens, then I won't be voting for them, either.

I've been working at my medium-sized company for seven months. Although our employee handbook doesn't mention anything about political advocacy, I have a feeling that they might want to amend it after the office manager just emailed next year’s holiday schedule document decorated with a " 2024: Save America Again!" sticker.

ErisCaffee,
@ErisCaffee@masto.ai avatar

@mjgardner My condolences. I try to avoid explicit mentions of politics in the workplace. People generally end up having some idea of other peoples' views anyway, but there's no need to go around advertising your beliefs, ESPECIALLY if you are a manager.

I, a straight person, have a question. I'm talking about homophobia in a draft blog piece, and what’s a good choice of word for the people that homophobes dislike and abuse? Has it got to the point where “queer” is respectful and appropriate? Is “LGBTQ” better? “Gender-diverse”? (I think I’m correct to think that “homophobe” has grown to include anti-trans and gender-related bigotries generally?) Who has written a really good essay on the subject? Thanks in advance.

ErisCaffee,
@ErisCaffee@masto.ai avatar

@timbray
As a lesbian and a trans woman I am fine with just about anything, but I have also known quite a few people who strongly object to "queer" so I suggest you avoid that. LGBTQ is good; add a plus + at the end if you'd like.

Homophobes generally are transphobes, but not all transphobes are homophobes. Sadly there are plenty of gay, lesbian, and bi transphobes these days. Still a minority, but they are very loud. I recommend using homophobia and transphobia independently, therefore.

Do you eat breakfast?

And by "breakfast", I mean the first meal of the day, and actual food (coffee, tea, and juice, don't count as food but smoothies do)

Please boost for a wider demographic! 🙏

The House “Impeachment Inquiry” of Joe Biden is off to a predictable start as the GOP introduces actual faked images of texts. Who knows where they pulled them from. But they’re not real, and the effort is a sham from the get-go. It’s disgraceful and wrong.

ErisCaffee,
@ErisCaffee@masto.ai avatar

@georgetakei
Do you have images of these or a link to something discussing them? I'd love to see what they submitted. I'd also love to see some representative face articles of impeachment for presenting false testimony in an impeachment hearing.

Hurt everyone in the entire world.
Hurt all American kids.

The booksellers at achieved union recognition in Jan 2022, but their employer won't give them a contract. That's a scummy way for a "family business" to treat hardworking booksellers, who are seeking a living wage - and are being offered a real-terms pay cut instead. Booksellers can't live on love of literature - they need to pay rent, buy groceries and support their families. Half Price, give HPB Workers Unite the contract they deserve!

Econ question:

More and more I hear about remote workers whose jobs are "in" the US, basically because the dollar is powerful and the US is rich and still growing while a lot of the world isn't. Surprisingly to me I've heard this happening a lot even in Canada where you wouldn't think the benefits would be THAT big? How is this gonna affect macroecon numbers if it starts happening at scale?
