If you are ever called to jury service, always remember that in the UK the jury is entitled to bring in what's called a “perverse verdict”: accepting that the accused committed the crime, but finding them not guilty anyway.

The government hates juries knowing this.

@ianbetteridge @me More like jury nullification is the US version of a perverse verdict. We inherited it from British law when we declared independence. I don't know why the names are different, though.

I dread Winter. But the Winter Solstice always cheers me up b/c it means the days are now getting longer again! Which seems really counterintuitive when Winter is only officially beginning today.

ErisCaffee,

@briankrebs
The idea of the solstice being the start of winter and not the middle has always struck me as exceedingly odd. For me, this is mid-winter. Always has been and always will be.

@mjgardner@social.sdf.org avatar

A question for everyone whinging about “#BigTech”:

Almost every “tech #oligarch” began with a scrappy #startup supported by customers who were fans of their work, building them up to what you now hate.

Every case is different, but in general did too much success change them or do you just hate too much success?

ErisCaffee,
@ErisCaffee@masto.ai avatar

@mjgardner

Sorry, but I don't accept the premise about these guys beginning with a "scrappy startup".

Elon Musk got his start as the son of a millionaire and he bought a scrappy startup that other people had already created. In fact he did this twice, with PayPal and Tesla.

Bill Gates likewise got his start as a son of money.

Now, Steve's Wozniak and Jobs did start out the way you describe, but then again they don't draw anywhere near the ire that others do.

ErisCaffee,
@ErisCaffee@masto.ai avatar

@mjgardner
Possibly. I tend to tune out and avoid people like that. Mind you, I used to be like that myself, but the older I get the less it matters to me.

Rural teamed up with House Dems to reject from the massive school spending bill, HB 1. I can't connect to our container registry from anymore because unceremoniously removed support from their extension last month. They say it "will be moved to a separate [as yet unpublished] extension.” https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items/ms-azuretools.vscode-docker/changelog#user-content-1.27.0---16-october-2023:~:text=GitLab%20Container%20Registry%20support%20will%20be%20moved%20to%20a%20separate%20extension

The same release added registry support and retained separate support. This essay from last year about as an onramp to Microsoft lock-in is looking more and more accurate: https://ghuntley.com/fracture/

ErisCaffee,
@ErisCaffee@masto.ai avatar

@mjgardner That sucks. For a while in the 00's (when they were under the consent decree) MS played nice with the world, but since getting out from under the supervision of the courts they have slid back into their old, monopolistic ways it seems.

I do see that there is an extension available from Gitlab itself, so maybe that can help you.

15 November 1937 | A Dutch Jewish boy, Bernard Arie Cohen, was born in Den Bosch.

He arrived at Auschwitz on 10 February 1944 in a transport of 1,015 Jews deported from the German-occupied Netherlands. He was among 800 of them murdered in gas chambers after the selection.

Also note that at 80 years old Joe Biden is considered by many to be "too old", but they don't say the same about Donald Trump even though he is 77. If Trump won again he would be older than Biden was on his inauguration day.

The Supreme Court is hearing a case on whether people with a history of domestic violence can be prevented from owning firearms. This is madness. It shouldn’t even be a close question. But because such laws weren’t in place back when they were burning witches at the stake and women were second-class citizens, the gun folks claim it violates the Second Amendment. Give me a break.

ErisCaffee,
@ErisCaffee@masto.ai avatar

@georgetakei I'm a gun owner who thinks domestic abusers should under no circumstances be allowed to own guns. The other gun owners I know agree, but we are definitely a minority of gun owners. I hope the Court acts sensibly and upholds the domestic abuser ban.

(Side note: I was pleased to see that the Houston Area Women's Center filed an amicus brief in this case. I worked there for a while more than 20 years ago. They are good people!)

I'm not filling in the legal gender field because just fuck off. They have all my PII -- no need to know my "legal" gender to identify me.

    In a story that's actually all too common, a woman was denied medical care because she might get pregnant. The care in question is a medication for the treatment of cluster headaches that are so severe they sometimes cause her to pass out. But the doctor said he wouldn't even tell her the name of the medication because it could cause birth defects IF she got pregnant, something she has no intention of doing.

    In fact, my housemate is in a similar situation. They need a hysterectomy for reasons I won't go into, but their doctor is denying them the surgery because they might change their mind about having kids at some point years from now. This leaves them with a daily condition that is painful, and makes being out of the house for extended periods of time difficult.

    We need to firmly establish in US law that people have an absolute right to control their bodies.
