Ah... the disinformation and propaganda bots have arrived on Mastodon.

If you haven't been on Twitter, they've been pushing this narrative that "western media didn't cover South Africa's arguments" while literally sharing BBC and DW clips a day before on the same account.

It flooded Twitter to the point that any suggested tweet below infosec content was about this garbage.

The account is like 6-days old... let's see if it gets nuked. It will show me if Mastodon is worth my time anymore.

Ro Khanna’s birth name is Rohit. He probably changed his name to market himself better in politics.

All you folks criticizing Nikki Haley for changing her name for political reasons are also going to criticize Ro Khanna for doing the same, right?

Or maybe name-shaming isn’t a great idea after all, and we should focus on their actions and policies?

Her political and policy choices are entirely fair game. And her actions do come across as suspect. But the name a person chooses to use should be a non-issue.

There aren't all that many people of any ethnicity who are called by their full name. It's really weird to attack someone for using a simplified version of their name.

Made a trip back to the US for the first time in a couple of years. A few things that stand out:

  • there are so many fucking ads everywhere

  • infrastructure is crumbling everywhere I look

  • cops cops cops cops cops. I saw more cops within a few hours of getting back to the states than I’ve seen in a few years of living abroad. Americans generally have no idea how hyper-policed they are.

For more context, people in China have been assembling plain white bread sandwiches to try to understand how we live in this part of the world, and they are posting through it (the idea of eating anything cold or raw, especially a vegetable, is seen as especially disgusting in the Chinese world, with some exceptions)

If you have ever made bean curd from scratch (do not recommend, it's a ridiculous process) you'll know it's cooked while being made. So maybe served cold but certainly not raw.

I'm just using the one that's built into . It works and lets me customize how the text looks. My only gripe is that audio stops if the tab loses focus.

    I ran across the term "European-Americans" not too long ago and a little light bulb flicked on. Why aren't we always using that nomenclature? Seems like we should be referring to people whose ancestors came to the US from Europe in the same manner as we describe people whose ancestors came from any other part of the world, no?

    It turns out that Target and Walgreens LIED to #sfba residents that a crime wave was what forced them to shut down their stores.

    The real reason was underperformance. They slandered the cities they did business in because it was convenient.

    Tried out Meta's Horizons Workrooms with @futuremeetings and I'll grudgingly admit... not bad!

    Workrooms lets you join either in or video conferencing and sit around a table, share screens, and chalkboard. It doesn't let you do anything else: you are in that chair and you will STAY THERE. There's no free movement.

    But it performs well at that limited scope. Directional audio is perfect, you can port your computer screen into the VR space, and there's passthrough to see your keyboard.

    A view of the table in front of me. I see my friends' displays as translucent shadows, but in front of me, is a view of the screen of my desktop (there's an app on my computer that is doing the sharing with my headset). The black square on the desk before me is actually passthrough: I can see my real desk and keyboard. It's not bad on the Quest 2, but I suspect would be fabulous on the Quest 3, which is more designed for mixed reality.
    I can even turn on my desktop webcam, and project a view of myself wearing my headset into the VR space! Incidentally, Horizons Workrooms has decent hand tracking, but I picked up my VR controllers so I could take this photo.

    Just your regular reminder that the real money behind is commercial real estate. Downtown areas — especially those like that steadfastly refused to build high-density housing and mixed-use areas for decades — are now suffering because the commuters they depend on for income are no longer showing up.

    What a shame that $800B of “value” will be lost, but hey, that’s business, right? Surely we’re not going to nationalize the losses by forcing people to commute against their will, right? What’s that? Oh, we are?
