Just got back from getting a flu shot and had the opportunity to ask why CVS cancelled my phizer Covid shot. It turns out that it’s a problem with the insurance companies and they hope to get it straightened out by Wednesday or next week at the latest. The problem also affects the Moderna Covid vaccine as well, but CVS was a able to get a some before the problem happened. @larand @ai6yr

@stevewfolds @SteveInVentura @ai6yr @larand We have so many cases at my school. I'd say well over 40 at this point, but since we're no longer counting, it doesn't seem to matter. Staff doesn't get notice from admin or the nurse when parents call in & say their kid has COVID. We no longer notify families of other kids in the class when their classmates have COVID.

This whole book banning thing, Moms of 'Liberty' the pulling of school libraries, turning school libraries into detention centers.

It's obviously all connected & 'concerns' about trans people and CRT are just excuses to make the policy go down more smoothly with the public. To make the debate a mess, emotionally charged & awkward.

The real goal is obvious: Limit the exposure of young people to libraries. It's a war on libraries.

And I've been too shocked to really process what that means.

Nshrubs,
@Nshrubs@mstdn.social avatar

@futurebird @lisamelton It's also a war against public ed. When you convince others that public ed is "failing", throw in bad tests for "accountability" & more convincing, then put in a voucher program that defunds public ed while giving public money to unregulated, unaccountable private schools, you can pick & choose who actually gets educated & the rest get trained for cheap labor. Look at the belief system of Betsy DeVos - that's Christian Dominionism in a nutshell. https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/opinion/columnists/iowa-view/2020/05/28/devos-aims-prop-up-religious-schools-expense-public-education/5268933002/

Ha! My first "stop scaring people" reply guy (about COVID), who doesn't follow me, telling me to "keep my scaremongering out of my feed" because I mentioned my son (a paramedic) telling me that they're seeing a lot of cases this week for the first time in a long time 😂. Duly blocked. That is what a "filter"is for.

@ai6yr @BakerRL75 I've had a couple here, both blocked, but definitely nothing like the x-bird site. Have yet to be accused of being a pedo & a groomer on this site because I'm a public school teacher, which is also a nice change. On the x-bird site, my block list is well over double what my follow list is.

Well, I guess that answers the "hmm, should I really mask up for teaching my classes" question in my head. One of my employers (and educational institution) is still tracking and reporting exposures... employee and students. Glad they are still doing this.

@ai6yr My school district had administrators on a retreat about 2 weeks ago. By that next week, we'd heard of 9 admins with COVID (including my principal). We heard the later number was 14 infected, but that was piecemeal/grapevine. Does not bode well for the school year.

This ad poster for the iMac is utterly perfect. Perfect photo, perfect slogan (the period at the end is key — “Yum” without the period wouldn’t quite play the same way), perfect relative scale and placement of the elements. Even the kerning is perfect — Apple Garamond never looked better or more timeless.

@gruber @lisamelton I still have this one in my classroom. Those were my favorite years teaching & using tech with my students. So much creativity! Now we're stuck with Chromebooks, which are more about productivity. Teaching with tech isn't as much fun as it used to be.

@ai6yr Not surprising. Several years ago I ran across some tourists hiking out at the Wave near the UT/AZ border. They were lost, out of water, and not thinking clearly. Luckily in my party we each had about 5 liters of water (in AZ, we always hiked with more than we needed), salt tabs, plus I had a 10 gallon container of water in my car at the trailhead.

A lot of people still think about Covid as a wash your hands and socially distance kind of thing.

Chances of getting Covid from touching something is near zero and we're far more likely to catch it from someone we can't see because it can stay in the air for a long time, drift long distances, and remain potent long after a contagious person is gone (as much as 2 hours).

This is why improving ventilation is one of the most important things you can do to reduce risks of infection for yourself and people around you. With good air flow, an infectious person is less dangerous. Infected air is diluted and can't linger to keep infecting.

I took a variety of CO2 readings to estimate indoor air quality. Based on these readings, places I wouldn't want to be unmasked would be: house gatherings, offices, meeting rooms, conventions, public transit, a plane, funerals.

Places that may not be as risky as originally believed are: supermarkets, pharmacies, and restaurants.

Nshrubs,
@Nshrubs@mstdn.social avatar

@sysop408 @ingalls This looks like my classroom - 26 kids, 70-year-old school, windows sealed shut, no A/C. They tested the CO2 over several days, came back & retested the next week because they thought there was an error. No error. Explains why we're all sluggish & sleepy by midafternoon, especially on hot days, & reinforces why I stay masked inside at school.

Nshrubs,
@Nshrubs@mstdn.social avatar

@sysop408 @sarajw @ingalls I've had several students develop long term effects after just one infection. One of my former 2nd graders got it pre-vaccine. Now has asthma, inhaler in the nurse's office. Another former student basically has chronic fatigue/long COVID & only comes to school 3-4 days a week now. Another one has had GI issues ever since she had COVID. Just the tip of the iceberg.

Someone appears to have issued for protection there in at the striken World Scout Jamboree. Not a bad idea. Spot check and nearly every group walking has umbrellas.

Nshrubs,
@Nshrubs@mstdn.social avatar

@ai6yr Friend who was on the PCT a few years ago built his own reflective sun umbrella complete with a couple of small solar panels to try to generate power for his phone. Worked great in CA & southern OR for power, not so great in WA when he had days of rain, but then he used the umbrella as an umbrella. I have a photo someplace that he sent. Umbrellas have many (alternate) uses!

@Andres4NY @dgodon G&O Cyclery in Greenwood (N. Seattle) used to rent cargo bikes. Not sure if they still do or if they mostly just have ebikes now, but might be worth a look up. Dutch Bike Company in Ballard rents Bakfiets (sp?) cargo bikes by the day. Sorry - I can think of 3+ places in Portland that rent cargo bikes, but not in Seattle.
