Gummi Worms are probably the best kind of worms I've eaten.

Psychonaut,
@Psychonaut@mastodon.online avatar

@RickiTarr I ate fried silkworms when I lived in Asia, they were surprisingly pleasant, tasted like hazelnut

I also ate fried grasshoppers which taste like a McDonald’s French fry although I avoided the big spiky back legs

I drew the line at ant egg salad and scorpions roasted on sticks though

Asking for some good juju. You all came through for me the last time I needed it.

Please send good vibes and calm. I’m worried about my students who will be without the stability of my classroom for an entire week.

I’m a bad person

Psychonaut,
@Psychonaut@mastodon.online avatar

@davidho 100% but if you used renewable energy to make hydrogen then it would be a viable part of the solution wouldn’t it? It wouldn’t take much to modify jet engines to run on hydrogen and completely decarbonise air travel. Ditto the internal combustion engine

Psychonaut,
@Psychonaut@mastodon.online avatar

@stefanie @davidho appreciate the input but I feel you’re being defeatist. Forget blue hydrogen, focus on an environmentally sound method (electrolysis?). Isn’t it literally rocket fuel? How can it be feasible for space flight but not air travel? It might be difficult but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it. “We choose to do it not because it is easy but because it is hard” to paraphrase JFK

Psychonaut,
@Psychonaut@mastodon.online avatar

@stefanie @charles @davidho air sourced heat pumps are going to struggle to keep your house warm in the coldest part of winter. A hydrogen boiler would do the job better.

Psychonaut,
@Psychonaut@mastodon.online avatar

@stefanie @charles @davidho it needs to be mostly wind in the UK I think. But EVs can be a big part of the storage solution. Who uses their car more than 20% of the time? The rest of the time they’re just batteries on wheels. Plug them in and use them as part of the grid. Would need some investment in infrastructure, subsidies for EV purchases and probably free or heavily subsidized fuel for everyone.

Psychonaut,
@Psychonaut@mastodon.online avatar

@Hypx @stefanie @charles @davidho personally I don’t think different opinions about storage should stop us from starting the process. I think there’s a role for gravity storage, batteries and hydrogen. Efficiency considerations are secondary when the fuel is free, but efficiency will rise with time as we get better. Hydrogen is not without its problems but with enough people working on it we’ll find solutions.

Psychonaut,
@Psychonaut@mastodon.online avatar

@Hypx @stefanie @charles @davidho the key is to demonstrate that this is an opportunity to make us better off, not worse off. There is no cost to net zero (or net negative), not in the long term. The first country to do it will be a green energy superpower, as rich as Saudi Arabia or Dubai

Psychonaut,
@Psychonaut@mastodon.online avatar

@Hypx @charles @davidho I don’t understand why it has to be a binary choice. Gravity storage and batteries are probably the best solution for a decentralized domestic grid. Hydrogen is probably the best solution for air travel or if you want to export energy, whether via a pipeline or very large gas carrier ships.

What do we need to do to start to solve the housing crisis?...

well, what we don't need (despite the seeming composition of providing it) is low deposit mortgages for first time buyers....

The Yorkshire Building Society's Accord unit is now offering first time buyers mortgages requiring only a £5,000 deposit.

Generally speaking such highly levered loans are inflationary & while we can sympathise with first time buyers trying to buy, this will just inflate prices further!

Psychonaut,

@ChrisMayLA6 we need to make it illegal for anybody to be a residential landlord apart from the government

Last night our cable internet box randomly died. It’s totally fried and must be replaced. This happened just as my husband got home from work, waking me up to tell me the governor of NY had issued a warning about power outages during the Coronal Mass Ejection (there was a big solar storm last night) — basically I thought the world was ending and put my laptop in the oven. (it’s a faraday cage)

I may have overreacted.

Psychonaut,
@Psychonaut@mastodon.online avatar

@futurebird If your cable is a copper wire and not fiber optic then that’s exactly the sort of thing that’s likely to have a large induced current isn’t it? Just like telegraph wires during the Carrington Event. A laptop or phone isn’t big enough to induce a large current I don’t think.

ChrisMayLA6, to Energy
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

The key to renewable energy (whcih by its nature can be erratically supplied) is storage.

But, the Govt. thinks storage is not enough & still advocates for gas turbines to cover gaps in renewable energy provision.

However, pumped hydro (using gravity, to release water previously pumped up hill during surplus energy periods) is one of the most efficient storage technologies (& is clean), and once built cheap to maintain.

This is where public investment should be going.

H/t FT

Psychonaut,
@Psychonaut@mastodon.online avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 There are also hundreds of disused mine shafts in the uk. You could install large weights in each that could be lifted when there was excess energy in the grid and then dropped (slowly) to power a generator when needed. Less of an eyesore.

Without looking it up tell me something you know about The Great Attractor.

Psychonaut,
@Psychonaut@mastodon.online avatar

@RickiTarr our earth based observations appear to show that the universe is expanding in all directions - major evidence for the Big Bang theory. However there is an exception, a smallish area of space where a few galaxies (possibly including our own Milky Way? I can’t remember) appear to be converging on a point. This point is known as the Great Attractor.

A few more things on HS2:
Network Rail weren't consulted
Parliament wasn't consulted
The cabinet weren't consulted
Local government wasn't consulted
Just a snap decision made by one completely unelected man.
Govt has immediately suspended compulsory purchase orders on land for phase 2a (to Crewe), so nothing's happening there.
They've started selling off CPO'd land from phase 2, probably for peanuts.
Edit: more lying.

The US Constitution does not require the Speaker of the House to be a House member. With the House almost evenly split politically, these troubled and acrimonious times require the strong and steady hand of a universally-admired and confidence-building leader.
