Just going to reiterate these helpful little bits of doggerel:

If the Naomi be Klein,
You're doing just fine
If the Naomi be Wolf
Then oof, baby. Oof.

AND

If her name is Parker Posey
Everything is looking rosy
If instead she's Posie Parker
What you've got is something darker

Since people are talking about Kent State, Ohio, 1970, it's a good time to talk about Jackson State, Mississippi, 1970.

Similar situation, except there was no active protest, just a bunch of students hanging out. The mayor of Jackson declared a riot and called in the pigs. Someone threw a glass bottle, not at the pigs, but they still opened fire. Phillip Gibbs, a student at Jackson State, and James Green, a high school student who was walking home from his job, were murdered by cops. Many others were wounded.

Sepia-toned photo of a couple in a casual seated pose, looking towards the camera. She is on the left, nearly sitting on his lap, smiling, wearing a dark knee-length dress with buttons up the front and a wide collar, holding a white purse. Her hair is straight, shoulder-length, curled at the end, with bangs. He is wearing light-colored slacks and a boldly patterned shirt, like a Hawaiian short, and has his arm around his wife. His hair is short and his expression is more curious than friendly.

It's been 10 years since Flint's water crisis started--all because some white supremacist GOP politicians wanted to (or claimed to want to, given the predictable outcome, it's a safer bet that the damage to the Black community was their real goal) save money on water infrastructure. Legal victories have been won and money set aside for compensation to those injured, but Flint's Black residents mostly haven't seen a dime. And they still pay more for their water than most other city residents in the USA, still suffer health impacts from lead poisoning, and are still witnessing the economic hollowing out of their community. Excellent article:

I forget how I discovered them, but it was just a couple months ago, and since then I've been consistently impressed with the quality of reporting and writing. Check it out!

My office just had our biosecurity briefing about avian influenza and its risks to farms. To avoid becoming vectors, we must disinfect our trucks, wear plastic booties, avoid contact with cows and other livestock, and disinfect everything we can before and after visiting a farm.

Unlike last year, when we were told that we can relax our biosecurity measures once midsummer hits, now it's just an indefinite recommendation. Seems wise to me. But then I'm one of those weirdos who still thinks COVID is a risk.

@futurebird yeah it has been dry for the past couple days, after a week with plenty of rain, and there was a light frost this morning. The first frost in over a week. Actually, I poked one of them, and she moved a bit, so maybe they were temporarily frozen?

SallyStrange,
@SallyStrange@eldritch.cafe avatar

@ColesStreetPothole @futurebird well because they were not moving at all. When I touched the one, she just waggled her legs weakly, then continued lying there

    Forbes: Climate inaction is costing us $38 trillion annually.

    "Even if CO2 emissions were to be drastically cut down starting today, the world economy is already committed to an income reduction of 19 % until 2050 due to climate change, according to a new study published in Nature. These damages are six times larger than the mitigation costs needed to limit global warming to two degrees."

    is coming whether people want it to or not.

    I honestly don't care if someone is addicted to prescription painkillers if that's what it takes for them to function without pain.

    This puritanical idea that we should not use or have access to medicines that work because "drugs bad" gets people killed across multiple types of care.

    SallyStrange,
    @SallyStrange@eldritch.cafe avatar

    @gwynnion technically the medical term for "needing painkillers to function because otherwise you're in too much pain to function" is "dependency" not addiction. E.g. diabetic people are dependent on insulin. I have Hachimoto's disease and I'm dependent on levothyroxine.

    Your point stands regardless.

    What's it called when a mispronunciation or a spoonerism makes it into an audiobook? It's not a typo exactly... E.g. I just heard the narrator (Jennifer Ikeda, who's very good) of Autonomous by @annaleen telling me that the characters printed some "snifer riples" for target practice.

    Do you have 1080p money?

    SallyStrange,
    @SallyStrange@eldritch.cafe avatar

    @Looping It's a play on a trope of Black American culture that goes like this:

    Kid: I want McDonalds!

    Mom: You got McDonalds money?

    1080p being the highest resolution available, which you only get if you pay for the deluxe internet package

    Oh btw I was buying cat food and I asked the cashier how he was doing. And he gave me a real sob story about working multiple jobs, only seeing his son (age 1 1/2) for a couple hours, not seeing his fiancée at all, and showed me his hurting wrist and a scar on his shoulder. Work injuries. So I grabbed a unionize sticker from my purse and told him that if he went on strike, I wouldn't cross the finish line.

    Just had a moment where I was about to refer to the state of Rhode Island, and my brain was like, "Don't be ridiculous. There's no USA state called Rhode Island, which isn't even an island. How silly"

    SallyStrange,

    "Pencils come from Pennsylvania
    Vest from Vest Virginia
    And Tents from Tent-esee
    They know mink where they grow
    Mink in Wyo-mink
    A camp chair in New Hamp-chair
    That's for me

    And minnows come Minnesota
    Coats come from Dakota
    But why should you be blue?
    For you, you come from Rhode Island
    Don't let them ride Rhode Island
    It's famous for you"

    Knowing some of the lyrics to the song "Rhode Island Is Famous For You" actually does NOT help me remember that Rhode Island is a real thing

    We watched about half of "Black Adam" last night (it's free on Tubi) and actually it was pretty decent. I understand why it wasn't a massive hit, though: all the bad guys are white and all the good guys are Black or brown. All the action takes place in "Kahndaq," which is a clear fictional replacement for Iraq or someplace similar, in the Middle East. BONUS! Aldis Hodge, one of my favorite actors, plays Hawkman, and does it with so much panache! God I love that man.

    Update: finished watching it and I'm happy to say it was enjoyable all the way through. In fact it was one of the better superhero movies I've seen, full stop.

    Extra bonus! Mo Amer is funny and Sarah Shahi plays a major role. It's a good ensemble cast. And the effects are lovingly rendered.

    And there's a positive portrayal of an angry mob of Middle Eastern people. :)
