What is one of your best rainy day memories?

My Cousin Sarah and I got to stay at our Great Grandma's house together, and it was raining, and she told us we didn't have to be cooped up, we could go play in the rain. This was very exciting, because it's not something our parents would have gone for. So we twirled around and leapt in puddles and licked raindrops off rose petals. When we were done our Gran put us in a hot bath, and made us hot tea and treats. She brought out a big bag of costume jewelry and let us go through it, we tried everything on, and thought we were very fancy, and she let us keep our favorite ones.

I'm British but one comes to mind

2012, the weekend of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, there was a flotilla of boats parading down the Thames river in London, including the Queen, on a gold boat waving to the plebs and bootlickers waving little plastic flags. It fucking pissed down all weekend, torrential rain. Literally pissed on the parade. Magic

We went camping in the woods with kids (7 and 5). As miserable as it was we had fun. Rain on a tent is a wonderful sound. Plus, wet plebs

There are quite a few candidates but this sprang to mind. A broach with a Victorian photo of a person dressed as a Poodle

Kind of proto-furrie vibes. I think we can agree it's a bit creepy

Since, my last post ended up in a long thread about the pros and cons of sports, I'm curious, what is your family and personal history with sports?

I'll go first! My Dad grew up in a Sport's household. His Dad, my grandfather, was obsessed, and he wanted his sons to be too. My grandfather was tall with an athletic build like a swimmer, but he married a very petite 4'8" woman, who never weighed over a hundred pounds. Both my Dad and his Brother were average height with a slight build, neither played sports or were good at it when they tried. Not liking sports became my Dad's rebellion. He became a preacher instead, his Dad grew up in a Preacher's family, and hated it. When I was growing up, my Dad always pushed intelligence and spirituality over physicality, we only had a game on if my Grandfather was there. I got a little of both my parents, I've always been small and plump, what science calls a dumpling (please don't fact check this). I enjoyed group activities and non competitive sports. For instance I played volleyball (very poorly), but only enjoyed it if I was on the B team, and had no pressure to succeed in it. I did go through a brief period where I pretended to be really into sports, because I thought it would impress boys. I'd watch just enough to get highlights. I was basically like Moss in I.T. Crowd. Did you see that ludicrous display last night?!

I was 11 years old, just moved up to secondary school (high school). Had a former friend from my previous school who turned into a snake when we moved up. We were paired up in the 100m sprint try outs

I wanted to beat him so bad. I broke the school and district records for my age. I burnt that fucker by 3 seconds

They thought I was a prodigy, never recreated. Fast but a flop after that race in comparison

Not a good day for space missions 😞

During a short up and down Flight 72, Mars helicopter Ingenuity lost its comm link with rover Perseverance. NASA engineers are working on restoring it.

This follows Flight 71 on Jan 6 which made an emergency landing 35 seconds into a 125 sec flight; apparently the relatively featureless sandy terrain proved difficult for its navigation system.

Meanwhile, Voyager 1 is still sending garbled data.

Stay tuned.

Yes, magic that was

Strangely he doesn't seem to draw nearly as much flak as other dissenting voices from the right wing headbangers. Gary Linekar can't tie his shoelaces without creating a shit storm

I had an "Uncle" Billy (he wasn't blood family), my Grandads best friend from the war. I saw him every year, he'd come and stay for a few weeks, he eventually lived with us until he died

He was the most Scottish man I've ever met, accent, turn of phrase, porridge for breakfast every day

On his deathbed I learnt he was actually Polish, came after the war to join his sister who was a refugee in Glasgow

How nobody ever mentioned this I don't know

I live in a house that is about 350 years old. Not long after moving in I discovered this carving in one of the bricks outside. I'm always charmed by the style John has tried to use to leave his legacy with

The brick is about 3 and a half feet from the ground so I suspect he was probably a child. I often wonder about John, did he get a spanking for defacing the wall or was he allowed to do this by a sentimental parent, leaving his childhood mark on their home

Think about John a lot. Wee scamp!

I'm 50, have 2 teenage kids and over the years have had exposure to young people because of this

On the whole they are so much nicer, more open and caring than previous generations, in my experience

My eldest came out as non binary, their younger brother just went, ok, and has never misgendered them once. A lifelong childhood friend transitioned, cool, no deadnaming, that's the deal now, crack on being mates

Maybe I've not been on Facebook enough but the kids seem cool as fuck, better than us

    Random parenting anecdote

My first child was a baby, 6 months old or so. Crying and crying, inconsolable, as babies can get. Tried all the normal stuff, no joy. For some reason I took them by the ankles and just dangled them upside down. Crying stopped immediately, calm baby

In all these years I've always thought it was confusion/distraction that did the trick, as is often the way with kids. Thinking about it now, maybe they just wanted to be upside down and I figured it out somehow

I live in a house built around 1700. I often wonder about all of the people that were born or died in the room I'm sat in right now. I imagine a fair few

More generally, if these walls could talk! 300 years of domestic life. It's not a mansion, it's a domestic house. I know farm workers/rope makers have lived here in the past. Many families down the years, living in close proximity. Fascinating to think what's gone on in here, dramatic or banal

UK folks outraged by the Post Office Horizon scandal. Take more interest in public inquiries. There has been a detailed ongoing inquiry available to the public for the last 2 years on this

Institutional child abuse, police corruption, governmental failures leading to the deaths of tens of thousands of people, among other things, are being aired but the press don't push them to you so they pass as disclosed but unheard

So it's again with the theme

My offering is not so much a live performance, more a work of art. Blows my mind every time I watch this

In context, on British TV in the 60s, a Black man, a rare sight in itself at the time, with a bone through his nose, providing a frankly terrifying performance of a voodoo waltz. Jay leant into colonial prejudice. I can only imagine the amount of tea spat out watching this

I've been a bit dragged down lately (2019 onwards), as I'm sure many of you all have

So with this in mind. Who are nice people you know or have met?

You can have more than one, it's not finite, just big up good people

I have a friend, Steve. When we were young (15) he was proper cool, me not so much. He didn't do the mean girls thing, he clued me up. Introduced me to so much music, literally my foundation. He remembers my birthday, my kids too. As a man this is borderline superhero territory
