@gbhnews I take it you're from southeastern New England somewhere, then. Seems the further one goes in that direction, the more likely one is to say "wicked" unironically. (I've lived in Boston, Portsmouth RI, and several other places in between.)

"Which came out of the opened door—the lady or the tiger?"

American writer and humorist Frank R. Stockton was born in 1834.

One of Stockton's most famous works is the short story "The Lady, or the Tiger?" published in 1882. Stockton also wrote a number of other notable works, including the novel "The Adventures of Captain Horn" (1895) and the short story "The Griffin and the Minor Canon" (1885), among others.

@gutenberg_org Many don't seem to know, despite the popularity of "The Lady, or the Tiger?", that it has a sequel story also by Stockton; it's titled "The Discourager of Hesitancy", and I'd argue it's an even greater work. I highly recommend reading both.

That wealthy tech 46-year-old who’s trying to live forever?

Avoiding booze and sleeping well and taking supplements and experimenting with injecting himself with blood plasma from his 18 year old son?

Turns out he got COVID in 2022 …

… and by his own report lost 15% of his lung capacity, from which has yet to recover

Excellent post about the lessons from this, by Nate Bear: https://www.donotpanic.news/p/the-billionaire-who-wants-to-live

It's 2024, and I still play a ton of Wolfenstein 3D every year. It's just a perfect game. My memory's not great though, and it's weird I STILL don't have much memorized even after playing these maps SO MANY times.

Right now I have the Xbox 360 version paused on my Series X in the living room and it's been sitting like that for a day or two, so Wolf 3D music is just quietly playing in the background. I realized I'm cool with this. My brain's always in Castle Wolfenstein killing digital Nazis anyway, why not have it as background music for daily life. 🤣😂🤣

Got a funny screenshot the other day. Not sure I've ever spotted when I've been exactly at 1% life but it happened and I caught it!

Zotmeister,
@Zotmeister@mastodon.online avatar

@jake4480 Little known fact: if BJ's health percentage is a single digit, he'll actually "drink" blood puddles to gain 1% health each. (Not defeated enemies - I mean pre-placed puddles on the floor, with or without bones.) Run over them just like medical kits and the blood will vanish and BJ will heal that tiny amount...

As I was getting nostalgic about the NES, I started looking up retrospectives on the Famicom again.
And I came across this really fun video.

And now I want a complete Xevious on Switch. 😭

Zotmeister,
@Zotmeister@mastodon.online avatar

@OutofPrintArchive Why settle for "a" - there are several Xevious options on the Switch. The NES version is on Nintendo Switch Online; the Famicom version is in Namco Museum Archives Vol. 1 (and the sequel in Vol. 2), and the arcade original is part of Hamster's Arcade Archives line. No Xevious Arrangement or Xevious 3D+G yet. (Nor Solvalou, for that matter.)

I just received a pitch email with the title "Your Writing on Teeth Whitening!"

It begins ...

"Hi Clive,

I’m reaching out to you because I noticed you wrote about teeth whitening in the past. I felt you might be interested in learning about us because we are known to have a best-selling whitening strip product on Amazon and are changing the oral care industry!"

I get a lot of positively unglued pitches, but this one made my day

Zotmeister,
@Zotmeister@mastodon.online avatar

@clive I'm not (yet) of an occupation to get pitches, but I am reminded of when UnitedHealthcare sent me a letter correctly noting that I had not had a PAP smear done and recommended I did so.

TWICE. Two separate letters. Several months apart, at least.

I'm with Neighborhood Health Plan of RI now. I prefer insurers that have my basic physiology correct.
