Do you think there are "normal" people? If so, what constitutes normal? If not, why not?

alexhaist,
@alexhaist@wandering.shop avatar

@RickiTarr People who do not question their narratives are normal in one sense I consider very important.

alexhaist,
@alexhaist@wandering.shop avatar

@RickiTarr Thinking about their actions in a more meta way. Like, my wife and I psychoanalyze our friends for fun, discuss the patterns of social interactions and how to navigate them more effectively. Lots of paying attention to broader stories than the immediate moment.

must remember that normal people are not interested in how to milk spiders

I get relying on sources that don't share my values. Nothing in our societal order is uncompromised.

But calling gay rights political is a dog whistle that I hear loud and clear. There's no world in which I directly pay money into that kind of leadership.

On to the next...

This is a long shot, but I don't suppose anyone knows why, during the Permian Period, angiosperms went wild in most plants because of a drying climate, but trees chose to diversify into many more conifer species (gymnosperms)?

i don't want smart appliances, smart cars, smart anything. I want items that are durable and can be repaired for a long time, products with lots of OPTIONS I can choose for accessibility, and products that don't dump features for shareholder greed. products that can be used by novices and products which can also be hacked by experts. modular, scalable, repairable, adjustable, human products.

Name a movie or TV series where none of the characters are actually good people. Explain why you think that.

Scavengers Reign, for me, came out of nowhere - and it's been rarely talked about in my circles.

it is, without a doubt, the most important piece of animated science fiction i've seen in a very long time. maybe ever.

here is the 2016 short film it was based on, which - although largely unrelated in terms of plot - has a similar spiritual tone

alexhaist,
@alexhaist@wandering.shop avatar

@vga256 I just stumbled across this show and was both entranced and... traumatized. I loved the gooey biology interfaces and the sheer reality of each alien biome the protagonists wandered into. Such sharply observed details.

I'm in kind of a romancey mood... anyone recommend any good series for binge-watching that have great romance stories in them? I've already seen Bridgerton, obvi.

Doesn't have to be a "romance series" like that but should heavily feature some good swoony romantic subplots.

Or even recs for recent great rom-com movies (I haven't really kept up with movies in the past several years). Saw Crazy Rich Asians, but I think that was the most recent one I saw.

Question for you:

What are some things you enjoy about winter?

alexhaist,
@alexhaist@wandering.shop avatar

@mishellbaker Fallen leaves freezing under clear ice, like a deliberate piece of still art. The mucky rich smells in between freezes. The sheer fluffiness of Icelandic horses.

I, admittedly, curse way too much, but I just adore a faux curse. When I was a kid, one of my Mom's friends was a very proper Southern lady. Instead of saying "They think their shit don't stink" she would say, "Some people think they poo poo vanilla ice cream".

What is your favorite faux curse?

alexhaist,

@RickiTarr For kids young enough to appreciate it: "What's a word that starts with f and ends with ck?
"Firetruck."

Okay, after the heavy question this morning, I think we need something silly, so three questions, answer all, one, or none:

What is the best, worst, and/or funniest pet name you've heard?

alexhaist,

@RickiTarr My friend named her horse Crash. Some time later, she did realize that he was not trail horse material.

@ml @plantscience Poking at my grandpa's backyard cactuses in Los Angeles. I would scratch them up as a little kid so the patterns would stay on the leaves. I'd do it on the thorniest ones so no one would suspect a human had done it. Not sure if I fooled anyone.

I actually had to get out of bed at stupid o'clock this morning just to see what all the noise was about.

Two ravens, perched directly above my place calling out to all their friends in the gloaming dawn.

Yeah that doesn't, like, bode, or anything.

A massive sugar maple fell across the trail and was sectioned to move it. When I examined the trunk, I saw a huge swathe of blackened charcoal--this tree was probably struck by lightning and charred all through the trunk.

The ability of trees to survive damage and decay will never cease to astonish me. It looks like two healthy yellow birch trunks are growing on either side of this gaping hole, still inside the original tree, still part of it.
