Many, many years ago in the building containing the UCLA ARPANET (the Internet's ancestor) Lab where ARPANET host #1 resided, there were a bunch of long serial line cables that ran from the computer room (we called them "machine rooms" back then) to the relatively distant graduate student/staff work area cubicles with their own CRT terminals.

Due to the length and condition of those serial lines, the maximum speed typically was 1200 bps. In the computer room, so close to the systems, we ran at 9600 or 19200.

I proposed to the building facilities team that new, higher quality serial cables be pulled so that we could bump up the speeds in the cubicles to similar speeds that we had in the computer room itself.

This took more convincing than I had originally anticipated, because the initial response I got was that the upgrade was unnecessary, since "nobody could read faster than 1200 bps anyway." -L

now no longer lets me look at Twitter accounts unless I’m logged into Twitter.

As someone who values the preservation and accessibility of information, this alteration in Twitter's functionality poses a considerable drawback. In the past, I could freely browse Twitter accounts without the need for an account or login. This unrestricted access allowed me to explore a wide range of content, interact with public discussions, and stay informed about various topics. However, with the new policy in place, my ability to access and explore Twitter has been hindered.

This, from a sheer archiving perspective, is a big reason for me to use the over Twitter.

I want information that I post to be publicly available for everyone. Unless I'm logged into Twitter, I am no longer able to view Twitter accounts. Which, from a sheer archiving perspective, is a big reason for me to use the over Twitter.

In contrast to Twitter, the Fediverse distinguishes itself by providing a platform where users can access and read content without the obligatory step of creating an account on a specific server. That’s right, the Fediverse now has the “unique” feature of not requiring account registrations to read posts. Amazing!

By eliminating the mandatory registration requirement, the Fediverse promotes accessibility, allowing users to read content without the constraints of user accounts, thus allowing broader dissemination of knowledge and facilitating a more inclusive online community.

Because I embrace the Fediverse, I contribute to a network where my posts, thoughts, and ideas can be discovered by anyone interested, without any gatekeeping barriers. This unrestricted flow of information encourages meaningful discussions, diverse perspectives, and the democratization of knowledge.

The decentralized nature of the Fediverse provides added reassurance that my data is not controlled or exclusively owned by a single entity. Unlike Twitter, where my information is stored on centralized servers managed by the platform itself, the Fediverse operates on a decentralized model.

This means that my data is spread across various servers, owned and operated by different individuals or communities. This decentralized structure makes information more accessible, mitigates the risk of censorship, and empowers users to have greater control over their online presence.

If you want what you write to be publicly available to everyone, Twitter is no longer your friend. It’s time to start writing for the Fediverse where your words can be read by all—regardless of whether or not readers have an account on , , , etc.

There’s no need to register an account to read content posted to the Fediverse. This is yet another thing the Fediverse does that Twitter does not.

fugueish, to random

Mastodon's weaknesses (poor UX, difficulty to run instances, expense to run instances) are great opportunities for Meta. The Fediverse can solve these problems, but it takes work.

Facebook Instant and Google AMP were able to gain a foothold because most publishers were and remain unable to make efficient, usable web pages. If they could, Instant/AMP would have no sales pitch.

The Fediverse has advantages and an opportunity to beat Meta on quality grounds. If one wanted to show that, for example, ~ capitalism ~ is uniquely or primarily responsible for Computers Being Bad, this is a huge opportunity. Show the world that UX and efficiency and reliability don't require hyper-scale.

For example, no ads and not 'needing' to track onmouseover of every fucking pixel (as Facebook does) are huge boons for efficiency. It is possible to tone down the JavaScript in ways Meta can't. It is possible to tone down the server-side complexity in ways Meta never can.

Both sides have a great opportunity to prove their respective points. The next year or so will be interesting...
