I went looking for exotic warblers and instead I found the humble house sparrow. I grew up in Chicago and house sparrow, cardinals and pigeons are the only birds I ever recall seeing as a child.
A juvenile cedar waxwing sits on a bare branch. It is a light brown with a black mask around its eyes. This bird has brown stripes on its belly, marking it as a juvenile. The tip of its tail is yellow.
This bird's stout brown and white speckled body is so well camouflaged I almost missed it. It is a Wilson's snipe. It was using its very long beak to dig in the mud for something to eat. It is a lifer for me.
