Google's own researchers now say AI is a top vector of disinfo, in a paper that severely and obviously undercounts the problem

I think the fediverse really does make good on some of the grifty promises made by crypto/web 3 charlatans — decentralized, own your data, all with no fomo scambucks! And seeing sites at the bleeding edge working on fediverse systems like this brings me a lot of hope.

https://digiday.com/media/why-publishers-are-preparing-to-federate-their-sites/

Google and Meta almost fully captured the traffic referral market, and as platforms push anti-publisher AI content "features," finding new paths for traffic referral is absolutely critical to publishing.

Hey, Mastodon … I’m trying to track down an #AppleNewton developer named Stephen A. Cronin.

He worked at #AMD and operated a software company called TapTech based out of Austin, Texas in the late 90s. I’ve managed to contact his former software partner, Francis Preve … but Francis lost touch with Stephen years ago.

Together they released a sequencer program for #NewtonOS called NR404 and I’m hoping the source code still exists somewhere.

Boosts appreciated.

Any individuals out there that offer 3D printing in the UK? I'm looking for some tiny props, walls etc and wondered if anyone out there does anything like that. Happy to paint them myself.

Scoop: I obtained the contract Samsung requires independent shops to sign to buy phone repair parts from them.

It requires:

  • "Daily" dumps of customer data
  • The "immediate destruction" of any phones a shop comes across that has third-party parts

Alright nerds, I have a question. I would like to set up a standard way to get a derived value back from a number of sensors; for example, given a sensor’s PM2.5, PM10, Ozone, CO, SO2, and/or NO2 reading, I would like to return an estimated air quality index (AQI). Ideally I could also have a standard way to map any given AQI value to a category string, e.g. 10 = Good, 75 = Moderate, 175 = Unhealthy, etc.

codechimp,
@codechimp@mastodon.online avatar

@cassidy Maybe some macro templates would help, you could define the logic to create the AQI as a function for each sensor type then have a parameter passed in of the sensor to calculate.

IKEA is acutallt enjoyable on a weekday. The parking lot of ours is shared with a Lowe's and a Costco and it's so bad on a weekend.

I'm here because @cassidy has been showing all the benefits of the IKEA smart air purifiers and I need to check them out.

Thinking of spinning up a personal blog to review products that don't conflict with my work.

I still play with gadgets and research the hell out of them and how they fit with my needs, and I do basically the same level of mental documentation as I did when I was a full time product reviewer. Taking a few photos and vomiting up a few thousand words of insight would at best take a couple hours extra.

Upsets me to see companies kill support for hardware and not open it up to let other folks tinker with. "Our IP is worth more than the environmental impact of our waste" leaves a bad taste in my mouth, sad to see Spotify doing this:

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

GossiTheDog,
@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social avatar

I got ahold of the Copilot+ software.

Recall uses a bunch of services themed CAP - Core AI Platform. Enabled by default.

It spits constant screenshots (the product brands then “snapshots”, but they’re hooked screenshots) into the current user’s AppData as part of image storage.

The NPU processes them and extracts text, into a database file.

The database is SQLite, and you can access it as the user including programmatically. It 100% does not need physical access and can be stolen.
