Even if CO₂ emissions decreased annually as much as during the pandemic lockdown, we wouldn't achieve our climate targets.

While individuals made huge sacrifices, the system remained. This shows that individual action will not solve climate change. We need the system to change.

What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

More than half the CO₂ emissions of the industrial age have been dumped into the atmosphere since 1990.

It's not fashionable to talk about consuming less as a climate solution because our economy is based on selling us crap that no one needs.

Back in 1985, Carl Sagan told Congress that continuing to burn fossil fuels will increase global temperature, cause climate change, melt glaciers and ice sheets, and cause sea level rise.

His solution: Fewer government subsidies for fossil fuels and use of renewable energy.

Why is there the expectation that f**king up the planet and saving it should both be profitable?

It's hard for people to visualize removing tons or billions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂). I propose we talk about CO₂ removal () like a time machine (e.g., this machine will take us back 5 minutes). For example:

Q: How far back in time does planting 100 million trees take us?

A: If one mature tree takes up an average of 25 kg of CO₂ per year, then 100 million trees will take up 2.5 MtCO₂. That's a time machine that takes us back 33 minutes and 6 seconds in a year. It's not a lot.

Instead of fixing infrastructure and car bloat, we have this 👇.

Is everyone on the same page that old-growth forests sequester much more carbon than younger forests?

So it makes more sense to focus on not cutting down trees rather than planting new trees since it takes two to three decades for trees to reach full maturity, if they survive.

Half of the world’s population depends on synthetic fertilizers for food.

We need to phase out fossil fuels but to doubt the importance of Haber-Bosch to humanity is unserious.

This bonkers story about how a former DJ sold thousands of airplane engine components with bogus documentation that are installed in airplanes worldwide might be a good inspiration to fly less. 😬

“I know how this information looks—when taken out of context, it seems bad,” Exxon CEO Darren Woods said in response to the Wall Street Journal’s inquiry about the documents that show Exxon executives strategized over how to diminish concerns about warming temperatures, and they sought to muddle scientific findings that might hurt its oil-and-gas business.

Lol. In what context does this look good?

It’s unfortunate (in a sense) that while temperatures were extreme this year (warmest in the instrumental record in many places), most of the US and Europe were spared so many will feel that this level of warming is no big deal.
