Can you participate in a thought experiment with me? The posts warning about fascism are good, but I'm wondering what you think fascism actually looks like. Give a thought, and list what it looks like. Don't just say "the end of democracy." List what the concrete changes will be and make it local. "In my town/city/county/state the following will happen......" Think about it before replying. Not just for .

In Mystal's piece he talks about how Clarence Thomas became self-hating, Mystal shares a story that he told his mother he wasn't black because he heard something negative about black people at school and it didn't apply to him so he figured he wasn't black. I'm just curious how many of black kids tried to separate themselves from blackness when they were young because of some ignorant thing a white person said?

So while I was up in Canada scouting out safe places to whisk my family to in case white people start acting up again this fall, I missed Fani Willis testifying. A friend sent me a link to the full testimony while I was in the airport Sunday. Just watched it last night...so I am compelled to point out...again...the hypocrisy of white America and how they still don't know a damn thing about how black folks live. A thread...1/5

Both studies and interviews with police show training has little impact on changing behavior. See e.g. Minneapolis, Before George Floyd was murdered the police were known to kill people. The force went through EXTENSIVE retraining or conflict de-escalation AND they had an affirmative obligation to intervene if a fellow officer is using excessive force. None of it kept the cops from murdering George Floyd. 1/12

@philip_cardella SO the problem with your example is that the law in various countries treats this symbol differently. Because of the Holocaust experience, Europe bans that symbol. But in the US, it is just a symbol, like hanging a noose or burning a cross. Our courts consider that speech. Speech loses its protection when it becomes an act, but our laws are slippery on that. There is no internationally accepted definition of terrorism, and for good reason. 1/2

@blackmastodon I have a bonus cut this week. A certain bad actor in the country music world caused people to dog country music last week. I get it...but for all you closeted country music fans who might have been silent last week, here’s Miko Marks on her cut ANCESTORS. It’s country y’all. She's Black and she is singing about us. https://youtu.be/8UTXD5ig_Og

Here's some news that's more important and impacts more people than the SOTU address: Target is moving towards a PAID subscription model to compete with Amazon Prime...sigh Target has been straying further and further away from its original successful model. I don't pay anyone for the privilege of spending $ in their stores. And folks who are on a tight budget will be charged more because they can't join? Make it make sense.

@blackmastodon The second part of the ThoughtExperiement asked you all to assume Trump was a distraction and to indicate what you thought the underlying root complaint is for the MAGAs. I asked Europeans not to reply, because their underlying causes of right wing discontent are different from ours AND because they are more willing to critically look at systems than Americans are. I wanted to hear from the people who live here. 1/7

This week’s abolition thread is on reparations. What does reparations have to do with you ask? Well everything. As we’ve been discussing many of the conditions that lead communities to be unsafe have been caused by massive divestment in communities of color leaving them resource poor and lacking fully functioning infrastructures that can provide housing, jobs, schools , medical services etc. 1/13

Tonight we are going to one of our favorite holiday events: the HipHop Nutcracker at Strathmore Theater. It's a fun re-telling of the classic story and at the end Kurtis Blow comes out and does a break dance! And yes...he is quite old to still be doing that. Masks on of course. Xmas day will be quiet with a Zoom call to family who are far. Tree at my house and the Kwanzaa set at my daughter's so my grandson learns traditions

@BlackMastodon I ran across an article a few weeks ago and I knew I wanted to share the information with you. It was behind a NYT paywall but there’s an alternate link to the story. It’s about a part of Brooklyn that several times a year engages in a program of community groups policing the neighborhood. Brownsville In Violence Out was featured. https://www.essence.com/news/community-police-brownsville-brooklyn/ 1/5

@blackmastodon Hey family. I've been ragging on my friends who allow Google, Apple, and Facebook (!) to curate their news. And then they complain when I raise news stories they haven't seen. 🙄 Can you all share a very simple way they can create their own list of news sources. It has to be simple. They all have advanced degrees but are still on Facebook (!) and still use Amazon because it's "too"convenient. I need something they can do in 5 minutes or less.

ChatGPT and other systems like it have become hot topics of conversation recently. Folks also throw the term AI around a lot. I’m not a coder nor do I have a computer science background but I can tell you AI has been used on poor folks and Black and Brown people for quite some time. New harmful technologies are often tried out in communities of color first. 1/10

Last week I highlighted some groups from the Community Safety Fair in DC that were focusing on reduction of harm – one of the four identifiable buckets of police reform. Today I want to highlight two groups that are working on transparency and accountability. Remember that transparency is about getting full data about police misconduct. More data may lead to more accountability. 1/8 *Ed: spelling & Grammar

This post is for the Black and Brown people who post on Mastodon. Other people can read it but this thread is to open a dialogue with our community specifically. I was traveling in Chicago for most of this week and I had an opportunity to talk to quite a few working class folks during my stay. When traveling I usually try and take the temperature on what is happening in Black communities locally so politics comes up often. 1/5

I comment on policing but don’t usually post on it. However, the university protests provide an excellent opportunity to highlight why abolition is needed in this country. 1/7

@BigAngBlack threw out a prompt for great fathers. I don't know if my father was "great," not sure what that would mean but he was a good father. He did his best during a time when all Black men were catching hell daily but particularly Black men who had his darker complexion. He got up every day, went to work and helped my mom build a strong family.

@BlackMastodon Much like some of the BIG institutional problems, dealing with racism in AI, algorithms machine based decision making systems or whatever else you want to call it, takes skilled warriors. Thankfully we have some warriors out there fighting to make sure the development of technology aids all of us, reflects all of us and doesn’t exacerbate systems of oppression already in place. So, here’s a few people to look for: 1/8

Today’s thread is on education. Poor educational opportunities contribute to making and keeping neighborhoods unsafe. If children aren’t educated properly it handicaps their ability to gain employment; if it’s not interesting or meeting the needs of students, they won’t go to school leading to truancy (another way for the police to interact with them and the soft police (Social workers) to invade the life of the family. 1/13

Now that everyone is caught up on what the thread is about, let’s get back to sharing efforts and projects created by local groups to help make their communities safer. Last week@AliceMarshall posted an announcement of an event here in DC where community groups were discussing their ideas for making their communities safer. I popped into the event to check it out and see what folks were talking about. 1/7

As you may be aware the DOJ report on the pattern and practice of use of excessive force violations in Minneapolis was issued last week. This is a good time to review why “reform” efforts usually fail. The DOJ opened their investigation in 2021 about 6 months after the death of George Floyd. During the investigation another Black man was killed. 1/9 edit- spelling

In answer to your query, our Thanksgiving menu:
Traditional roasted turkey with bread cube stuffing. (I am not allowed to experiment with stuffing or a rebellion will ensue); wild rice, candied yams, mac&cheese, string beans tossed with garlic and sesame seeds, brussell sprouts gently steamed with tomatoes and onions. Dinner rolls or cornbread. Dessert: pecan pie, squash pie (lighter than yams), lemon/poppy seed cake.
