It used to be if racists wanted to blame something on black people they'd need at least... you know a particular black person, a scapegoat, or whatever. Like "This is Janet the black lady who put the plane door on backwards." Or whatever... And then they'd go off.

But now it's just ... the possibility of black people that has them in a tizzy.

Theoretical abstract black people who literally aren't even there.

wtf.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@futurebird Because it's never been about what we do. It's always been about our existence itself. It's our existence that offends them. I really hope Black folks are understanding this now and will stop trying to contort themselves into something acceptable to white people. Nothing is acceptable.

Democrats are proposing legislation that would make engaging in most paramilitary activity a federal crime https://www.vice.com/en/article/n7e5xm/democrats-propose-bill-to-neuter-militias

@GottaLaff While this seems like it would be good, people have to remember that almost every law supposedly enacted to prevent white hate groups from violating others' civil rights is usually tried out on Black and Brown people demonstrating to protect their own rights. Would Black Panthers be able to gather and practice? What about the Fruit of Islam? How and who will get to decide what is "prohibited" paramilitary activities. I am very leery of these type of laws.

Can you participate in a thought experiment with me? The posts warning about fascism are good, but I'm wondering what you think fascism actually looks like. Give a thought, and list what it looks like. Don't just say "the end of democracy." List what the concrete changes will be and make it local. "In my town/city/county/state the following will happen......" Think about it before replying. Not just for .

@BlackMastodon Much like some of the BIG institutional problems, dealing with racism in AI, algorithms machine based decision making systems or whatever else you want to call it, takes skilled warriors. Thankfully we have some warriors out there fighting to make sure the development of technology aids all of us, reflects all of us and doesn’t exacerbate systems of oppression already in place. So, here’s a few people to look for: 1/8

@blackmastodon I have a bonus cut this week. A certain bad actor in the country music world caused people to dog country music last week. I get it...but for all you closeted country music fans who might have been silent last week, here’s Miko Marks on her cut ANCESTORS. It’s country y’all. She's Black and she is singing about us. https://youtu.be/8UTXD5ig_Og

This post is for the Black and Brown people who post on Mastodon. Other people can read it but this thread is to open a dialogue with our community specifically. I was traveling in Chicago for most of this week and I had an opportunity to talk to quite a few working class folks during my stay. When traveling I usually try and take the temperature on what is happening in Black communities locally so politics comes up often. 1/5

They were mad about funds that were supposed to address local unhoused needs being diverted to the new influx of immigrants. None of the people I talked to had a clear understanding of what rights and responsibilities Congress had versus the limitations on Presidential action. All this to say, the issues for the mainstream democratic party platform did not address the concerns of their communities and their comments reflected that. 4/5

@BigAngBlack threw out a prompt for great fathers. I don't know if my father was "great," not sure what that would mean but he was a good father. He did his best during a time when all Black men were catching hell daily but particularly Black men who had his darker complexion. He got up every day, went to work and helped my mom build a strong family.

Felicity Huffman said she paid to have her daughter's SAT score changed because she "wanted to give her daughter a chance." She felt like she would be a bad mother if she didn't. White people really do live in a different reality. Rich and famous and you think your kid won't have opportunities?! What happened to that "meritocracy" crap we are all supposed to be believing in? I don't even know how she can say that BS without turning into a toad or something. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/dec/01/felicity-huffman-college-admissions-first-interview *ed: Spelling

Both studies and interviews with police show training has little impact on changing behavior. See e.g. Minneapolis, Before George Floyd was murdered the police were known to kill people. The force went through EXTENSIVE retraining or conflict de-escalation AND they had an affirmative obligation to intervene if a fellow officer is using excessive force. None of it kept the cops from murdering George Floyd. 1/12

So while I was up in Canada scouting out safe places to whisk my family to in case white people start acting up again this fall, I missed Fani Willis testifying. A friend sent me a link to the full testimony while I was in the airport Sunday. Just watched it last night...so I am compelled to point out...again...the hypocrisy of white America and how they still don't know a damn thing about how black folks live. A thread...1/5

When my mom passed we had to search diligently through 3 floors of her house for any piece of paper that was folded because odds were there was some $ tucked into it. A good friend was cleaning up her mother's belongings after she passed and in the bedroom she shared with her husband of 65 years, they found a safe, which the husband DID NOT have the combo to and inside $40K in cash - her life savings for emergencies! 4/5?

fulanigirl, (edited )
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@blackmastodon
Did you notice how they referred to her savings as her "hoard of money" rather than her savings and then try to imply criminality because she used CashApp and cash to pay. How many people today use Zelle or Venmo rather than checks? But what? CashApp is something black criminals use? Is that what we are supposed to infer? And what black woman in her right mind does not keep emergency cash where she lives? 3/5

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@blackmastodon
Black people go on vacations, we save, and we prepare for emergencies just like white people do. Both my grandmother, my mother AND my father taught my sister and I to always have our own cash, and to this day we do. Fani WIllis is angry, rightfully so and she is exhausted,. You could clearly see that on the video. But, that sister jumped out there in Warrior mode. I'm wishing her the best and hoping she'll get relief soon. 5/5

Remember when Stacy Abrams ran for Gov the first time and how everyone made a big deal about the fact she had debt, like that made her unworthy in some way. Then reflect on the fact that Kavanaugh who presently sits on SCOTUS had 100 of thousands of dollars of debt until he was nominated? And somehow that debt disappeared? Did anyone ask if he took a freakin vacation while he owed that money? 2/5

Now that everyone is caught up on what the thread is about, let’s get back to sharing efforts and projects created by local groups to help make their communities safer. Last week@AliceMarshall posted an announcement of an event here in DC where community groups were discussing their ideas for making their communities safer. I popped into the event to check it out and see what folks were talking about. 1/7

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@StillIRise1963 Her first mistake was listening to the lawyers prep her for the testimony rather than speaking truth to power. Second mistake was buying the BS that Harvard would support her. All the time the Harvard lawyers are like why won't she just step down like the white lady did? Sister drank the Kool-Aid as many Black academics who reach that level do. Harvard just doing what they do...protecting their money. They didn't give a flying crap about her or her reputation.

Here’s a job announcement which I believe is in a file folder of every liberal/left organization including
those of some elite Black folks:

WANTED: Black woman to be a super hero.
Qualifications: Must be bold and fearless. Must be willing to take on the white men we are scared of. 1/4

Hey folks. A friend of mine lost her sight temporarily due to a surgery. Recovery will take months. What kind of tools can I refer her to so that she can continue to use the internet? I use alt text when I post pics but I don't really know how that gets translated. Anyway, I just wanted to help her, so I'm turning to the Mastodon experts for info.

EDIT: THANKS everyone. Got some tips and I'm going to do my best to get my friend back online.

I am NOT a Beyonce fan, never have been. But, I do enjoy country music and have posted cuts on my Friday music selections. Black people and particularly Black women have been a part of country music since country music became a genre. Here are some links if you want to learn more about country music artists who are NOT white.

@blackmastodon While I was in Canada I popped into the Toronto Black Film Festival and yep, I found something that inspired an thread. They were screening a documentary film called “Dancing in A-Yard, which documented a dance program that was established for men in a California prison. Most of the men were serving long sentences, with a few lifers in the mix. Many of them were sent to prison while they were teenagers. 1/5

@blackmastodon The second part of the ThoughtExperiement asked you all to assume Trump was a distraction and to indicate what you thought the underlying root complaint is for the MAGAs. I asked Europeans not to reply, because their underlying causes of right wing discontent are different from ours AND because they are more willing to critically look at systems than Americans are. I wanted to hear from the people who live here. 1/7

fulanigirl, (edited )
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@blackmastodon The root of the MAGA angst is the fight for the American White Identity. The fight is over whether "White America" will join a world order where they are not on top and where their voices are not always considered the most important one or will they enter a world where there are equals who don’t look like them, don’t speak their language, don’t eat their food or pray to the same gods. 5/7

@blackmastodon Just recently someone on Mastodon re-posted the interview with Nixon’s man Halderman where he proudly admitted that they created the war on drugs to negate any forward movement that was created by the civil rights legislation of 1964/65. This happened within the lifetimes of you old heads on this site and for the young people when your parents were already adults. 3/7

@blackmastodon They want a world where women don’t get to talk and die in childbirth like it used to be so they can get the next model. Do you see it? Are you prepared to frame that issue and talk about it? If someone were to ask me how I see the fight ending, I wouldn’t be able to answer. I think there’s a 50-50 chance we go fully and openly to Jim Crow 2.0. And when I look around sometimes I wonder..which side are you all on? 7/7
