Tested the waters in 2016... returned in April 2022 with one or two other people. The avatar is an Earth Day photo from a few years ago on my campus. Header image is lifted from my Twitter cover photo.

I'm not as gone from Twitter as I'd like, not yet. And in spite of the Bluesky board's politics I'm active there too, @ harmonygritz.bsky.social. You'll find my longtime "rainbow" profile image there, for now.

It’s clear journalism’s present day mission is both to NOT find out anything important and if they do find out, NOT TO TELL YOU.

harmonygritz,
@harmonygritz@mastodon.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 I don't quite remember when I realized that SCOTUS journalists were often the actual real-life friends of this or that Justice. I can't say nobody should have friends, but the bias is obvious in that realm.

(I think it was Totenberg or Biskupic dropping their fourth wall on a newscast some years ago. They both do it, oozing the privilege of access, but I don't recall which I saw first.)

Have y'all ever had someone act like you were hurting them somehow by just liking a food?

Any time I buy or make kimchi, my Mom says it's so gross and she doesn't want any and just on and on. I never offer it to her, or make group food with it, but for some reason she seems offended by it, and I don't know why.

harmonygritz,
@harmonygritz@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr This is literally yucking someone's yum!

My example: Lactose-free dairy. I have the milk & ice cream at home. At family gatherings there is some food I just don't eat, esp. if I didn't bring the pills along.

Family members have gone on for DAYS (it feels like) about not even touching the stuff, not knowing what it might taste like, whether they will turn into an alien pod-monster, etc.

There are lactose-intolerant fam besides me, but mainly they just consume dairy and suffer.

harmonygritz,

@StillIRise1963 We're still countering a whole cultural base & literature saying that is why we exist, here mainly in the context of serving that end. It's the Bizarro World, and once again it's an election year.

"recognizing that the Internet is less a technology than a human network"

I don't want to cherry-pick from the convo too much (folks should just read the whole thread) but this has resonated with me for 10+ years.

From my academic perch, I still think George Siemens had a point in proposing connectivism as a learning theory (~2004). It was about knowledge residing in the network, in both people and machines. I think it's the social connections as well as knowledge.

@RickiTarr 1980s time warp for this. I'd never do it in this era.

Up and down coastal California, as prelude to a cross-country drive, mostly on I-80.

Cassette mix-tapes exist. Safe, cheap motel chains exist. We (mainly) don't feel guilty about fossil fuels so it's OK to just drive.

Early enough that Reagan hasn't ruined everything.

Late enough after Vietnam that folks don't scowl at me for having been in the military.

@jeffjarvis This was sad to see/hear, Todd and Mitchell going at it and the third seat (Jacqueline Alemany) trying to thread that needle. I don't think "poor kid" often with TV pundits.

As a layperson, I just turned off the audio and finally switched channels. Somebody at MSNBC must realize it's NOT working.

Okay, this might sound weird, but this is what I'm thinking of today. I'm assuming most of you know the idiom, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." I know it's about looking at the horse's teeth to check it's age and health, but in my heart I have an alternate history where it's about The Trojan Horse, which doesn't really even make much sense, but it's still living there rent free.

So, does anyone else do this, make up alternate histories for words or phrases? If you do, I'd love examples!

harmonygritz,
@harmonygritz@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I've been socialized out of several sayings that were common in the Midwest of a couple generations ago, and/or in my Navy service.

"Not enough room to swing a cat" is an example of the latter. We never thought it was about actual cats, but rather about the cat-o'-nine-tails of eld. You can't explain that to animal lovers nowadays so I just don't say it.

Hard to overstate how enshittified and botshitted Google Maps has become. Went looking for my local locksmith on Gmaps. Maps shows 20+ fake locksmith referral scam outlets and doesn't even register the real locksmith, despite it being fully visible in Street View.

Instead, a red pin on the shop identifies it as a fake locksmith scammer. The real locksmith - which has been there SINCE 1942 (!!) and is a verified merchant - doesn't even show up.

Google Maps, showing the storefront for Golden State Lock as an empty building.
