It was frankly tough to get photos of Mayor Scott because he's a great rider!

But we kept up!
Councilman Ryan Dorsey, Lt Governor Aruna Miller, MTA's Holly Arnold, Baltimore Chief Administrative Officer Faith Leach, Bikemore, and dozens of others had a great time cruising through the bike lanes headed toward downtown.

Did you know that AAA now supports bicycles for their members? I hit a screw on my way home from work on Wednesday and got curious about this sort of thing after lugging my bike the last mile home with a flat tire. (Not fun, don't recommend)

It seems to vary by club/region but apparently I can call them to tow me/my bike as my usual service would cover for a car.

@hrefna the biggest benefit is that the network effects are already there. People can follow your users where they already are, it doesn't require you convincing people to use your app to engage with your content

What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

@CStamp @ocursedspite @c_9 @ajsadauskas @fuck_cars it's not a hard and fast rule and maybe it doesn't apply to you personally (I don't think I throw out that much food either and I try really hard not to), but yes, Americans waste a ton of our food supply by just throwing it in the garbage. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/this-is-why-americans-throw-out-165-billion-in-food-every-year-2016-07-22

Does anyone here have particular feelings about ?

I had been interested in the Da Vinci mini w+ as a good entry-level printer from a reputable brand and it seems like XYZ Printing was recently purchased by Nexa3D and they may be discontinuing the consumer products?

If anyone has any insight or recommendations I would appreciate it!

The three million toothbrush botnet story isnโ€™t true.

Hereโ€™s the original source of the story: https://archive.is/2024.01.30-203406/https://www.luzernerzeitung.ch/wirtschaft/kriminalitaet-die-zahnbuersten-greifen-an-das-sind-die-aktuellen-cybergefahren-und-so-koennen-sie-sich-schuetzen-ld.2569480

Itโ€™s simply a made up example. It doesnโ€™t exist. It starts talking about NoName Ddosia, too, which also isnโ€™t toothbrushes.

@GossiTheDog I don't even know if you're just shitposting or if that is a real fake thing but I'm now in love with the idea of a toothbrush botnet

As you see here, it's 15F/-9C currently here in Winston Salem, NC.

The wife is staying inside all bundled up. I was outside for a bit earlier as I went for a short walk to enjoy the cold. It's not too windy outside so that makes a difference.

@cliffwade more or less same. But it looks like we're going to be getting more snow on Friday...

itsshevee,
@itsshevee@tusky.town avatar

@cliffwade honestly since I don't drive anymore there's basically no downsides to snow now. Just need to get the sidewalk in front of my house cleared so nobody eats it trying to walk the dog or something

itsshevee,
@itsshevee@tusky.town avatar

@cliffwade I ride my bike to work most of the time (this week I've taken the bus) and I'm able to walk to most of my other necessities. I got rid of my car last year and now my wife and I share her old Civic. Just been minimizing using the car, which saves a lot of money and it feels nicer to get around without driving

Do you think there are any truly credible sources of news and information?

I feel like anymore when I read something, I need to do further research, and find second or third sources for verification. So many headlines are click bait half truths, hyperbole, or just full on lies and don't get me started
on YouTube "News".

itsshevee,
@itsshevee@tusky.town avatar

@RickiTarr I read my local newspapers and feel like they're fairly reliable but I think you just need to go into every story knowing that they have a perspective and what that perspective largely is and be prepared to look at it through that lens

itsshevee, to cars
@itsshevee@tusky.town avatar

Just did some quick math and at my current rate of ~1100 miles per year on my eBike I'm spending ~$6/year to charge the battery. SIX. DOLLARS. PER. YEAR.

Dare to compare: When I had a car, if I were to drive it to the office every day and still had a car payment + car maintenance my annual cost would have been ~$3800

Just for comparison's sake, I've spent about $150 so far this year on replacement bits and bobs for my bike, which itself I paid for outright with proceeds from selling my car. Even if you include the cost of the bike I'm still up like $2200 this year and every year henceforth will be more like $3500. Plus I get exercise every day during my commute.

Only downside is America's wild aggression towards anything other than a car. Minor inconvenience.

Holy crap. Republican Gov. Mike DeWine says he listened to people on both sides of this legislation and came to the conclusion that โ€œfor those children who face gender dysphoria and for their families, the consequences of this bill could not be more profound," when deciding to veto the bill that would have banned gender affirming care
