More discussion on that preprint (yes just a preprint and getting Nature commentary!) about when exactly did the #Neanderthal gene flow into modern humans happen. Acc to Iasi et al, from 47 Ka for about 6000 years. Interesting here is the 'introgression deserts' with immediate selection against Nean genes for certain areas.
Millennia ago, Neanderthals and humans met, mingled and mated. And your health may depend on DNA from these long-lost ancestors. Live Science explains how "in some places in our genome, we're more Neanderthal than we are human.” https://flip.it/qiJdOD #Science#Humans#Neanderthal#Health#History
Seems very odd to use a flattened skull as the basis for a reconstruction, rather than a whole one. Plus I don't have that much faith in these reconstructions... seems like they involve a bit too much guesswork.
'...A new research paper finds that genetic material from #Neanderthal ancestors may have contributed to the propensity of some people today to be "early risers,"..."
We have an utterly fucked up idea of what counts as technology. Something that projects many of our biases including gender, and race.
To many these days it's only technology if it's electronic, and used by western men. But to take such a narrow definition is to ignore the amazing technology that surrounds us, and upon which our society is built. As such. It's time for a thread. I'm gonna talk about two different items you use every day, and the technology that goes into them.
@quixoticgeek I think it's in @LeMoustier's #Kindred book that talks about a particularly wear pattern often found on #Neanderthal teeth that suggests they were also making string.
It makes them seem very much closer to is somehow..
...If I remember correctly, people have up to 3-6% #Neanderthal genes, which is why #Caucasians have the lactase enzyme, and many Chinese cannot digest milk, b/ they lack it.)
Hard to believe, humans would mate with a far less developed species, causing strategic disadvantages for the tribe('s offspring.)
"Justice for Neanderthals! What the debate about our long-dead cousins reveals about us.
They were long derided as knuckle-draggers, but new discoveries are setting the record straight. As we rethink the nature of the Neanderthals, we could also learn something about our own humanity.
Matt #Gaetz on the House floor: "It is going to be difficult for my Republican friends to keep calling President Biden feeble while he continues to take Speaker #McCarthy's lunch money in every negotiation."
JUST NOW: Rep Matt Gaetz (R-FL) tells CBS News at a GOP meeting this morning he accused Speaker Kevin #McCarthy of having or paying social media influencers to trash #Gaetz.
