More discussion on that preprint (yes just a preprint and getting Nature commentary!) about when exactly did the gene flow into modern humans happen. Acc to Iasi et al, from 47 Ka for about 6000 years. Interesting here is the 'introgression deserts' with immediate selection against Nean genes for certain areas.

Millennia ago, Neanderthals and humans met, mingled and mated. And your health may depend on DNA from these long-lost ancestors. Live Science explains how "in some places in our genome, we're more Neanderthal than we are human.” https://flip.it/qiJdOD

Scientists reveal the face of a Neanderthal who lived 75,000 years ago for a new documentary on Netflix.

CNN reports on the research about a 40-something woman found in a cave in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Seems very odd to use a flattened skull as the basis for a reconstruction, rather than a whole one. Plus I don't have that much faith in these reconstructions... seems like they involve a bit too much guesswork.

Anyway... FWIW.

Did you know that the oldest known was also chewing gum?

tar is in its simplest form, burned birch . It forms a sticky black pitch that can be used as glue.

Evidence for (& ) use has been dated to 200k or the Old Age.

Birch tar is also a disinfectant & it has been found as a chewing gum in various locations in Europe.

One birch gum piece from 5700 yrs ago, contained a complete human of a woman.

We have an utterly fucked up idea of what counts as technology. Something that projects many of our biases including gender, and race.

To many these days it's only technology if it's electronic, and used by western men. But to take such a narrow definition is to ignore the amazing technology that surrounds us, and upon which our society is built. As such. It's time for a thread. I'm gonna talk about two different items you use every day, and the technology that goes into them.

@quixoticgeek I think it's in @LeMoustier's book that talks about a particularly wear pattern often found on teeth that suggests they were also making string.

It makes them seem very much closer to is somehow..

...If I remember correctly, people have up to 3-6% genes, which is why have the lactase enzyme, and many Chinese cannot digest milk, b/ they lack it.)

Hard to believe, humans would mate with a far less developed species, causing strategic disadvantages for the tribe('s offspring.)

Modern Europeans have a smaller proportion of Neanderthal genes in their genomes than East Asians do. New research suggests the reason lies at the feet of migrating early farmers.
