Ooooh should Pinball Dad stick his toe in the Linux Discourse

I've been on it since 2010, I guess I should maybe?

How about I stick my whole entire foot in, maybe if I poison it with my footstink then it'll die down a bit

This is wonderfully honest.

In 2000, I was in grad school, and I ran a SuSE box. it was a toss-up month to month whether the sound card would work. Forget printing entirely. And "help" was a user base that blamed me for things not working.

But it ran the model that I needed to run and I could print things at school.

Then, I got into the world beyond. I needed to print things and such.
I dropped it for Windows. I haven't looked back until now.

The most ridiculous thing about cop procedural shows is when they ask where a person was, and what they were doing at a specific time the person always has perfect and immediate recall. I'd be desperately trying to remember what day of the week that was, and trying to open my phone calendar. If I was the cop, I'd immediately be suspicious of the person who remembered exactly where they were and what they were doing.

There's been once in the past ten years I was in the position of being asked descriptive information about somebody (who broke a car window and ran away).
Bald. Male. Pale skin (as in a white dude).That's as much as I could manage by the time I was asked 45 minutes later.

I’m listening to “Wildacre”; historical fiction by Philippa Gregory.

The protagonist is evil. An utter psychopath. Admittedly, life for a woman in the 18th century is rough, and the opportunities Beatrice’s skills warrant are passed to incompetent men. But the body count is unpleasant!

It’s a very long book and a stressful read. Frankly, I want to stop but I also want to know the outcome and I’m not sure a synopsis will be satisfactory.

In short, I’m in a hostage situation with an audiobook.

Okay, since I'm on laundry today, a little story.

When hubs and I first got married, we were very much enjoying our little Honeymoon Bubble, and we were being lazy as Hell. We didn't do many chores, but the laundry we really let go. We weren't wearing many clothes at home anyway, so why bother. Anyhow, after weeks we finally reached the swimming suit bottoms situation, and decided it was time. It was loads and loads of laundry that needed done, so I had my husband back the trunk of the car up to a window of the house, then he popped the trunk, and I started tossing laundry out of the window into the trunk. We went to the bank, got about $30 bucks in quarters, and found the emptiest laundry mat we could, and did it all in one fell swoop. We folded it all and loaded it back into the car using those wheeled laundry carts. We never let it get that bad again, and decided it was time to be adults, and do regular chores, but it still makes me laugh imagining what the neighbors and the laundry attendant thought.

Feel free to share your own laundry story, if you feel like it, I love hearing people's stories!

Utterly ridiculous from the Pulitzer Prize committee today.

This Pulitzer citation supposedly honoring 🇵🇸 journos doesn't actually do so.

"Journalists & media workers covering the war in Gaza" includes everyone, Palestinian or otherwise.

The citation fails to mention the nationality of the journalists who "died" (euphemism which downplays the worst recorded journo slaughter), or the identity of their killers, the Israeli army.

Please compare with the 2022 citation for 🇺🇦 journalists.

The 2024 Pulitzer Prize Winner in Special Citations and Awards Journalists and Media Workers Covering the War in Gaza In recent years the Pulitzer Board has issued citations honoring journalists covering wars in Ukraine and Afghanistan. This year, the Board recognizes the courageous work of journalists and media workers covering the war in Gaza. Under horrific conditions, an extraordinary number of journalists have died in the effort to tell the stories of Palestinians and others in Gaza. This war has also claimed the lives of poets and writers among the casualties. As the Pulitzer Prizes honor categories of journalism, arts, and letters, we mark the loss of invaluable records of the human experience.

ohmu,
@ohmu@social.seattle.wa.us avatar

@econads @natureworks

The short version is that they tend to fall apart in streams relatively rapidly. This results in accelerated erosion and sharp bits that are dangerous for fish and other aquatic species.

I pasted a link to one study below but there are many more.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0925857416304670

They are still used as an approach of last resort where nothing else will work. Where they are used, though, they require frequent and often expensive and disruptive maintenance to be successful.

I’m on my way to tennis, but everyone else on this train has a giant suitcase and is presumably departing the city for Golden Week 🤔

(“Golden Week” is a run of national holidays that occur in Japan end of April / start of May. This year they’ve fallen on the Monday, Friday, Saturday and Monday, which isn’t a great line up, but many people will supplement with their paid vacation and take the week away.)

What's one lesson that you learned from 2016 that you would like young people who are able to vote now but were too young to be engaged in 2016 to know?

ohmu,
@ohmu@social.seattle.wa.us avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi
Ignore as much as you can.

I got out the vote in the past several elections before 2016. In 2016 I saw polls saying things like it was 98% certain Clinton would win. For the first time in years, I decided not to go help because of that.

That was a mistake.

Polls did actually used to be somewhat meaningful and predictive but that stopped being true sometime before 2016. I missed that change.
