Artemis201, to Babylon5

I'm watching and we're near the end of season 1.
Definitely discount DS9 so far. They sure did include an episode where the creepy 50-something alien dude decided to introduce another character to strip clubs and gambling, and the way he cheats at poker is using some sort of prehensile sticky tentacle-like appendage to reach across under the table and steal cards from the dealer.
Later confirmed, yes. That sure was a sex organ.
I'm glad that kind of humor has mostly died.

@Artemis201 "discount DS9"? Well, in one sense you are correct. JMS didn't have money. Esp. after he pitched to Trek producers (and he had spent years pitching B5 everywhere) and they said no and then they went and created a show based on a space station anyways, with almost the same general story arc, and even stole the name Dukat. So, no, didn't have Trek money. The irony is is the best Trek series of them all and it was completely plagiarized.

What’s better for the climate: A paper book, or an e-reader?

https://www.npr.org/2024/05/25/1252930557/book-e-reader-kindle-climate

"Traditional print publishing comes with a high carbon footprint.

But digital reading seems to have a considerable eco-advantage over print because it is paperless, so it saves trees, pulping and shipping [...] But digital devices also come with a substantial carbon footprint, predominantly at the manufacturing stage."

I was bored so I did the unthinkable. Well, to me it was always unthinkable as I have always been anti- . But, out of curiosity I subscribed to -4o and have been feeding various essays, poems, and posts from my various websites and asking for explications and such. And wow does have a great deal of just wonderful things to say about me. I will admit getting all this truly high praise is seducing.

Okay. So I have been using for a couple of hours and there is no doubt in my mind that many, many, many college students are using to write essays. I am so, so, so sorry professors and lecturers. I am so glad this was not around when I was in school. First colleges across the country started shutting down extensive courses/programs and now this. Oh, what a loss of a good .

This week in space stuff:

  • Video coming today on dark energy
  • First science results from the ESA’s dark matter/energy observatory Euclid expected Thursday
  • Possible geomagnetic storm May 24-25, but likely nothing as strong as the one that made the aurora so visible
  • Boeing Starliner currently scheduled for launch Saturday May 25, but this could slip further

@skrishna Starliner, more like Starlinger, lol

Honestly, how sad is to end a semester course without an even small clapping?
It was a ~50h long performance...

richard,
@richard@disabled.social avatar

@franco_vazza You're performing? You don't know the material, you are just memorizing the lines? Is this a common thing professors do? Why not just try acting? You could easily get a few commercials. You never know, remember the "Vidal Sassoon" guy? He ended up in Star Trek.

@JohnBarentine Why do I feel such efforts, however noble they may be, will not lead to binding agreements?

richard,
@richard@disabled.social avatar

@JohnBarentine Yes, I know there already was a binding agreement, but my understanding is that was thrown out the window.

richard,
@richard@disabled.social avatar

@JohnBarentine Ah. An affirmation and stronger EU, Japanese, and even Chinese inclusion would be needed.

richard,

@JohnBarentine Interesting. I think they should beat the U.S. over the head with them.

Has anyone wrote about how sociological and philosophical writing has changed over the last few centuries from being what the author really meant, really felt, to being what the writer believed people wanted to hear? (Yes, I know there is some Discourse Theory hidden in there somewhere.)

So many beautiful aurora photos going around right now. Wonder where those amazing colors come from? Here's a helpful breakdown.

When you split up the light of a typical aurora, it looks like this.

Many colors from just nitrogen & oxygen!

This is an astrophysics take of the : I have just used the CosmicRay Detector app on my laptop by the Global Cosmic Ray Observatory https://apps.apple.com/us/app/cosmic-ray-detect-radiation/id1169131314

to measure the flux of muons through the blocked shutter of the Ipad.

I don't have stats to compare with, but since I have already done the same experiment in the last two weeks speaking of cosmic ray detection at lecture, I have the feeling the muon flux is a bit higher now (~1 event/second).

It is hard to tell if they are still very much working on Tom's character development or if Robert Duncan McNeill had yet to get the character pinned down. He is still very excitable.
