🌟 Introducing BSD.cafe 🌟

Excited to present the first building block of the BSD Cafe project! When I registered this domain months ago, I envisioned a themed bar where we can casually chat about *BSD systems, Linux, and Open-Source technology among friends, acquaintances, and patrons. But like any bar, discussions can cover a wide range of topics while respecting everyone.

BSD.cafe will be a hub for various tools and services, powered by *BSD.

The first brick is a new Mastodon instance, a gateway to the Fediverse. Registration is open, and the server will be moderated under clear guidelines promoting good behavior and zero tolerance for hate towards anyone. Inclusivity, respect, and constructive dialogue are the key values of this new instance.

The server is currently hosted in Finland on a small VM, based on . Services are divided into VNET jails, connected in a LAN via a local bridge. A VPN system is also installed but not yet activated to move individual jails to different machines.

Multimedia data and cache are hosted on another physical server (FreeBSD, within a jail), with Cloudflare in front. The aim is to cache and geodistribute data, reducing network traffic on the main VPS.

Reverse proxy (frontend), mail server, media server, and the instance itself are reachable via .

The instance starts empty. No unnecessary content was pre-loaded; I want it to grow organically based on users' interests and following. There won't be any preemptive blocks at this stage. Users are encouraged to promptly report anything they find worth flagging.

Apart from my user (@stefano), I've added a bot from the beginning named "FreeBSD Fortune" (@fbfortune), which will automatically post a "fortune" every hour. More similar bots for other *BSD systems and beyond will be added as time permits.

Join me at https://mastodon.bsd.cafe to build a constructive and inclusive community—a safe and relaxing space for everyone.

Soon, I'll publish a website on https://bsd.cafe with an overview of tools, services, rules, uptime, and more.

In the last 48 hours:

Rome beat its all time temperature record by a whole two degrees Celsius.

China beat its all time temperature record by almost two degrees Celsius.

Death Valley narrowly missed the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth.

And there's more to come...

stefano, to threads

I wanted to give it a try and signed up for - here's what I found:

  1. A flood of posts from people I don't know, about topics I'm not interested in, clearly promotional or designed to grab attention.
  2. No hashtags, lists, nothing.
  3. Behind an apparently clean interface, I believe there's something hastily published just to have the right timing (and I think they succeeded).
  4. People excited to be part of the new social platform, but without providing any specific reason or added value compared to Twitter or the Fediverse.
  5. A generic sense of rivalry towards or the . It almost seems like many joined just to spite Elon Musk or to prove that "Threads is better than ". However, they demonstrate a lack of clear understanding of either platform.

Overall, I felt disoriented, much more than when I first entered the Fediverse years ago. We'll see, but I didn't find anything particularly exciting at the moment.

About the "70 Millions users joined overnight" statement: all the (non European) Instagram users can just join with two taps. They could just have launched Threads as an extension and...puff, more than one billion users subscribed in 10 seconds!

stefano,

Or should I say at last it's Friday? 😀

"Don't waste time in the Fediverse", they say.
"It's complicated and people don't interact", they say.
"It's scattered and you'll never get good engagement on your posts", they say.
"Pay Twitter , you'll have more visibility", they say.
"Without an algorithm, nobody will notice your posts", they say.

Well, I say they're wrong! 😄

(check the images - and I've more followers on Twitter than on Mastodon)

Same post on Mastodon and Twitter. On twitter, 200 views, 4 retweets, 5 likes. On Mastodon, over 950 boosts and more than 1000 likes.

I read that has launched and many don't understand why it's not fully usable via the web but only through a dedicated mobile app. Meta isn't interested in letting us talk but rather in collecting as much data as possible. Browsers have become (more) skilled at protecting us, while apps can have almost complete access to our mobile devices, gathering data that an average person couldn't even imagine. And our mobile devices have become the safe (or should I say, the exposed pantry?) of our lives.

Time for a new

I'm glad to meet you! I'm a computer science graduate who's been fascinated by technology since childhood.I'm a big supporter of open-source solutions and enjoy working with and Linux systems. I like writing blog articles, especially tech ones (https://it-notes.dragas.net) and, from time to time, some of them are widely appreciated, especially in the open-source community.

When the sun sets, its light becomes warmer and the tones turn redder. A sense of peace prevails, especially when the reflections kiss the water, illuminating even more and highlighting the colorful buildings around. It would be nice if all of us, without exception, stopped fighting our daily battles and paused, at least for a few minutes, to listen to the silence of the sun as it kisses our skin at sunset. Perhaps we would finally understand that life is too short not to appreciate moments like this.

I'm starting to no longer tolerate the commercial philosophy of today's world. I understand that selling is an art and that one must highlight strengths and conceal weaknesses, but enough is enough. If you have a 5 Mbit/sec connection and 20 TB of data moved daily, can you explain to me how I could put your server 'in the cloud'? I explain everything, and the response is: 'but everyone else is doing it, why can't we?' I've decided that soon I'll do without this client, even if they pay regularly. I'm tired of reasoning with those who prefer slogans over detailed and practical explanations.

101,525 people joined Mastodon in the past 24 hours.

To put that in context, 84,657 people joined Mastodon in the previous 6 days.

Twitter’s new “temporary” rate limit on reading tweets has caused a significant increase in Mastodon's popularity and user base.

What's happening these days with RedHat and right now with Twitter shows that, no matter how big and serious they are, one cannot rely on big corporations for their existence and work. Things can change rapidly and jeopardize everything.

@neil I've used this for years. It's customisable and easy to use. Not cheap, but definitely reliable. (and not only for WireGuard)
