Any experienced C developers among my followers? .

Expat, arguably the world's most popular parser, is understaffed and without funding. As has shown, situations like this are dangerous.

Last month, maintainer Sebastian Pipping put up a plea for help at https://github.com/libexpat/libexpat/blob/R_2_6_2/expat/Changes

(I would help myself, but my C skills barely surpass "Hello, World".)

Excellent point! @claresudbery makes a similar one for |s. In her talk "Let's stop making each other feel stupid", she argues that only by encouraging people to ask questions and to never feel ashamed for not knowing something, you allow everybody to thrive and grow.

Also, the talk is really entertaining: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwMAADcB1uc

yesterday, i took ownership of the "workers' rights" magazine on kbin.social > you can find it here:

since i consider workers' rights to be of international importance, i try to get away from an english-only, anglocentric perspective > attempting to counter english dominance on the fediverse, i added the hashtag "hartal" ("strike" in many south asian and southeast asian languages), aiming at a better discoverability of non-english posts at least on this specific subject

if you send me the term for "strike" in a language other than english, i will add the term as a hashtag to the kbin magazine mentioned above > contributions from the global south are especially welcome!

Any website which claims that ANY cookies are "required" to just serve you static text and images is lying. Any website which claims that it needs to "verify the security of your connection" to just serve you static text and images is lying.

The only reason any website needs to do either of these things is if it is logging data about you – data that it almost certainly hasn't asked for permission to log.

Just. Say. No.

tynstar,
@tynstar@nerdculture.de avatar

@mkoek @simon_brooke
I'm not familiar with all the details, but one exception I know (that makes sense) is the following:

If you log in to your account on a web site, it may set a cookie to store (more precisely: reference) your session.

In that case, the cookie is definitely required, and if the site doesn't use cookies for anything else, it doesn't need to ask for consent at all.

tynstar,
@tynstar@nerdculture.de avatar

@simon_brooke
100% this. Totally annoying!

Especially because if one really wants to, one can totally avoid the need for consent requests, cookie banners etc:

For my spare-time project, I made sure that its website is purely static without cookies. There's some use of "local storage", e.g. remembering dark/light mode. But there is no user ID or anything in there that allows identifying the user.

The corresponding webapp is dynamic and uses cookies for login, but not for tracking.

tynstar,
@tynstar@nerdculture.de avatar

@mkoek @simon_brooke
Exactly, I was assuming a same-site cookie for the login example above.

However, the rule is not simply "same-site cookies are always okay".

For example, a same-site cookie with a unique user ID for tracking visitor behavior (e.g. whether people who visit page A on the site later also visit page B and C) is not strictly required for any website, so one would definitely have to ask the user for their consent.

tynstar,
@tynstar@nerdculture.de avatar

@mkoek @simon_brooke
Well, AFAIK the EU laws don't even use the word "cookie", even the name "cookie law" is just simplification by the media.

The laws cover any usage/processing of personal data. That even includes random IDs that one can use to identify you as an individual (e.g. by looking it up in a company database).

Therefore, websites can't dodge the requirement of asking for consent for that kind of data processing just by e.g. replacing cookies with local storage or other tech.

tynstar,
@tynstar@nerdculture.de avatar

@simon_brooke @mkoek
Yes, and that could be used to track the user across any website they visit that also embed that image.

However, browsers increasingly block third-party cookies, i.e. cookies set by domains not related to the site the user is visiting. I don't know whether that particular distinction is made by any of the laws.

However, they probably don't need to care about either (not-)same-site or (not-)third-party because at least with GDPR, it's about the processing, not the tech.

If one side of a war can turn off the electricity and Internet for the other side of the war, I don’t think that’s a war 🤔

tynstar,
@tynstar@nerdculture.de avatar

@ryanhoulihan
No. The point about infrastructure access shows it's not fair or symmetrical warfare, but of course it is war.

One could say "it's not war, it's far worse" or "it's not war, it's a massacre".

But saying only "it's not a war" sounds like you're downplaying it, which I hope is not your intention.

I haven't done much reading these last few years, but finding "Into The Forgotten Forest" by @cyborg_writer surprisingly got me back to it.

The book itself belongs to fantasy / urban fantasy I guess, but it's unlike others in the genre as it has so much mythology, and combines it with the idea of a multiverse. Really enjoyed the world building and all these wonderful character viewpoints! Reading the second installment now.

The bit about using calendars for looking at the past reminded me of something I built for myself and a few of my colleagues: copying work logs from an issue tracker ( ) & from a time tracking app () to one's calendar in order to quickly see gaps or inconsistencies. https://nerdculture.de/@tynstar/110694908227775679
