X plans to remove public likes (i.e. the feature where anyone can see what anyone has liked on the service) soon. It will also be removing like counts from the timeline: https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1765560226462486988

@TodayInTwitter With Jack leaving Bluesky, and becoming active on twitter again, I wouldn't be surprised if there's moves behind the scenes for him to return.

Though, honestly, a dead cat could run the place better than the current leaders.

I'm doing another one of my little surveys, this time to see which parts of using on the desktop are the most problematic, and the various issues people are having.

I'll make a video on these results next week, and depending on the answers, maybe I'll make more videos on specific issues, either to explain these topics, or to see how we could improve.

So, here is the form, feel free to fill it out and share it around, so we have as many answers as possible!

@thelinuxEXP Not had any show-stopping troubles, but it's not all sunshine and daisies.

My big issues:

3D/Surround audio is a pain to set up, if it works at all.

Gaming keyboards with macros and extended features like screens (Logitech G), are limited to basic operations.

Mutli-player games (mostly BattleNet stuff) are just... annoying to config. There are guides for adding it to Steam, but they're cumbersome.

KDE, just let me drag/drop stuff without a modifier key!

@itsfoss Getting better. However, three things that I need for a full change-over;

Much better support for Logitech G keyboards. I've used the G15/G510 for well over a decade, and Linux support is poop.

2-channel positional psychoacoustics. Windows Sonic for Headphones is amazingly good at this, even on low-spec USB sound devices.

Battlenet games. Yeah, I'm old, and set in my ways. 90% of my PC gaming time is in WoW. Bnet support is wonky at best.

Once in a while, I read a story about the iPhone and realise just how far behind Android it is.

Take this: https://www.macrumors.com/2024/03/24/ios-18-home-screen-app-icon-customization/

Have iOS users really been unable to arrange their homescreens like this? Even the very earliest versions of Android let you place icons and widgets wherever you wanted.

Mind you, I remember diehard iFans declaring that the iPhone keyboard didn't need to change the case of letters when the shift key was pressed ๐Ÿ˜†

wuffish,
@wuffish@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent Customisable launcher, magnetic dock charging, loading software from outside sources...

They're not catching up to Android, they're catching up to Palm.

Heck, iOS didn't have copy/paste function until like version 3, something Palm had in the '90s. Of course, Fruitbats insisted it wasn't needed, but when it arrived, it was "The bestest feature!".

NEW: #AlaskaAirlines says all of its #Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes have been grounded for safety inspections after mid-air incident

wuffish,
@wuffish@mastodon.social avatar

@mikemathia Still one Alaska MAX-9 in the air, landing soon at KJFK. Looks like they took off before the CEO made the grounding order. Flight trackers show around 30 MAX-9s in the air right now out of a global fleet of ~200.

Maybe other airlines are selectively grounding them, but I've not seen anything concrete.

wuffish,
@wuffish@mastodon.social avatar

@mikemathia Oop. Missed one. ASA802 is due at KSEA at 0612 PST. Departed PHNL at 2233 HST (0033 PST), like 20 minutes after the tweet from Alaska air went out. Dunno if it has any passengers. It did leave an hour late. Maybe they deplaned everyone, and put them on a different bird.

It's a regularly-scheduled route, but since the Boeing field is within spitting distance to the north, pretty sure they'd want to get it back there quick.

Well, that didn't take long! I reposted my "Windows 3.1 Easter Eggs" video on TikTok, which has been on YouTube without issue since 2017, and it almost immediately got a "community guidelines" violation. I also noticed that TikTok's audio quality is much worse than YouTube's. It at least is in stereo, but sounds very low bitrate (64 kbps?). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8R27RMBIk20

wuffish,
@wuffish@mastodon.social avatar

@vwestlife People acting like idiots, or throwing food around the kitchen is okay, but gods help you if you dare post a video about a 30 year old operating system.

Doubt the ticktok users licking their screens to scroll the next video even notice the audio quality. They've either got it at max volume on the phone speaker, or rattling through gas station budget "AirPoods".

Gardening tip: if you have nothing living in your soil (no worms and no bugs), your soil is completely sterile (which is bad). There's a complete web of life which helps to keep your soil healthy. Add organic matter (compost), and stop using pesticides and chemical fertilizers. #gardening

Lake Superior water is delicious, though. Got a 20 year old bottle of it on a shelf. Aside from a little sand in the bottom, still absolutely clear.
