"No, for the middle of my back, I can never quite reach it."

"In exchange for...?"
"You could scratch my back," suggested the demon, flexing her wings restlessly.
"That's all?"
"The spell would cost you a first-born and probably a few toes."
"Let's get scritching then!"

sifaseven, to writing #Wordweavers Day 21: Do you consider how your MC's appearance may contribute to stereotypes?
Sometimes. There are many stereotypes of female characters (the femme fatale, the 'evil' witch, etc). I like to subvert stereotypes and turn them on their head. Each character is unique with their own personality. I show that through their dialogue and actions.
golgaloth, to writing Went to #Continuum16 #c16Reboot and spent so much time around writers and ideas that I wrote an entire 6,000 word short story over the course of the weekend.
Worth it just for that.
Also, many lovely people and interesting presentations.
jessekelber, to writing #WritersCoffeeClub 5/20 -- When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?
Sophomore year of high school. I had an amazing English teacher who loved my reports and essays and encouraged me to focus on my writing.
It's taken...three decades, but I made it work so thank you, Mr. MacArthur!
NicoleCRust, to writing First book revisions. Tips?
(Academic press) book pre-publication reviews are back. Really positive. YES!!!!!!!!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉.
So now I'm moving onto final revisions. It feels good to slip back into that headspace again.
My big question for anyone who has sent a book off to the world: What was your strategy for those last steps? There's addressing the feedback, of course. But after that? It will never been perfect. But it has to be great. How do you know when to let it go?
dsmith, During my own book revision process, an issue came to light.
Early in my teaching career, I found it paid off to treat all Ss as gifted regardless of the class make-up. I’d gather and tickle and motivate all Ss by enriching content, pursuing teachable moments, noting factoids and connections during instruction, etc.
Those are not always good practices when writing a book!
Do you have communication foibles/strengths that deserve attention as you shape and polish your manuscript?
NicoleCRust, @dsmith
Thank you!

Imagine being left in a planet with no liquid water. You have to find a plant (?) that looks like the child of a cactus and a fever-induced eldritch abomination, which burns your skin if you touch it, open it and eat whatever the thing that's inside it to get water in your body. Then you have to run so the people (?) caring for those plants don't eat you.
Maistro experienced this once, when he tried to escape from the time-ship. He learned the lesson…
ixtlidekami, to writing #PennedPossibilities #Writing 320 Worst event of your MC's childhood?
—The Latinamerican Tower Earthquake. I was 9. It's called that because the legendary Latinamerican Tower, a building that had resisted many earthquakes fell. It even resisted the return of the lake. Lots of people died and many parts of the city were destroyed. We lost our house and survived by pure luck. Just thinking about this scare me. The tower was rebuilt and made to look exactly as the original…

Teryl_Pacieco, to writing The knight struggled out of his armor then strode toward the dragon, "I need to be crushed immediately."
The dragon shifted his massive body, waiting for the knight to lay flat in his nest of furs and fabrics. Then he gently rolled some of his mass onto the knight's, worriedly asking, "Rough day?"
"Rough week," sighed the knight.
"It's Monday!"
There was no response, the knight had already dozed off under his favorite weighted-blanket.
golgaloth, to writing I've been writing for so many years and I still get caught up on Discrete vs Discreet. Do any of you have words you struggle with?
rabbit_fighter, @golgaloth Lay, lie, laid. I have to look it up every time.
CaraBruar, @golgaloth It's and its. So many times where I really think there should be an apostrophe because it's possessive but in fact there is not. It is extremely confusing!
NaraMoore, (edited ) to writing #WordWeavers #writing 20. How did you settle on your antagonist’s appearance?
The same process as for the other characters. The only difference is they are based on established creepypasta or creatures from Japanese legend. Mikawa is a standard yuurei. Mieko-kun has the dominant features of a yuurei with elements of the fictional character his living counterpart was based on. (That's an easter egg/homage if anyone ever spots it.)
sasha, @NaraMoore no i mean you said one of your antagonists is "a yuri" i thought that meant it was some kind of yokai
NaraMoore, Pardon,, mental slip. I should have written yuurei.
elysegrasso, to writing #WritersCoffeeClub #writing 20 When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?
Writing is a thing I have wanted to do since I was 6, or earlier. It is something I have done for more than half a century at this point even if you consider I did not really start writing extensively until I was in college.
To "be a writer" professionally or as a matter of identity is a separate question. I have never wanted that enough to let it impede the writing, or making a living. (Which may sound nuts.)

NaraMoore, to writing #PennedPossibilities #Writing 320 — What was the worst event of your MC's childhood?
Ume: "Worst how? The one that sometimes crowds in at me in nightmares, or the most serious one?
I remember my mother yelling at me for something trivial, Making me bow and touch my head to the floor in apology.
There was also the time I was biking off to join my friends and a tree branch fell and hit my bike. I flew off and broke my arm.
The most scary though was the time I told my mother I wanted to be a girl and she looked at me and said that was unacceptable and she never wanted to hear me speak like that again. There was something about her eyes that told me I had ventured too far. It was a look of utter contempt. I hid my feelings till I was able to escape to another country and transition. #Transgender #Transfem

ixtlidekami, to writing #TimeTravelAuthors #Writing 19 Any stories told within your story?
There should be, since Maistro's story is made of 1000+ years of stories…=)

ixtlidekami, to writing #WritersCoffeeClub #Writing 19 Do you agree with Hillary Mantell, who said the best qualities for writing are self-confidence and a little arrogance?
I'd say yes. Self confidence is mandatory. Otherwise, our own self-doubts can and will stop us before writing the first word. A little arrogance helps, so we can say with confidence "I'm a writer", even to ourselves, without feeling like an imposter. Much…=)
caointeoireacht, to writing #PennedPossibilities #Writing 318 What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?
My brain writes when it writes.
When it says !TYPE!, my fingers float like butterflies and sting like vivid emotions... because that's where I write from most times.
When it says 'Not now.' I don't force it because like with batteries for electrictonic, you don't over draw the current capacity unless you want shit to break.
NaraMoore, to writing #PennedPossibilities #Writing 318 What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?
I fear it will require a new brain. Amoung my many gifts is ADHD. I made it work for me, but prolonged focus is usually beyond me. A good juicy piece of narrative is good. Until I need to look up something. And then we are in for 5+, usually +, of chasing shiny objects around.
sfwrtr, "...it will require a new brain."

The older cat washed her whiskers making her pupils wait, "If you catch it, then what?"
The kittens couldn't answer, realizing the chase was much more exciting.
