Ok hive mind!

I am looking for sources for watching science documentaries (NOVA, Nature, National Geographic, BBC Earth... And other awesome stuff I probably don't even know about) that isn't via YouTube. I am fed up with their unrelenting greed.

So need suggestions on doc-heavy streaming services, and/or a #peerTube buddy to help me find stuff if it's there, and/or advice on an applebox app that filters out these unrelenting intrusive ads on YouTube. 😤

@vlrny If you enjoyed that episode about the spider/harp thing on Oregon Field Guide, there are literally years and years of episodes of that show. Granted it will be all science-y stuff from Oregon/Washington (this is btw one of my favorite shows, but I live here) and anything that doesn't have the compass icon on it on PBS you should be able to watch without having an account: https://watch.opb.org/show/oregon-field-guide/

vlrny,
@vlrny@disabled.social avatar

@anniegreens Oh yay! Thanks for the reminder. I had PBS for a year or so, but they didn't have a lot of back catalogue so kinda burned through all they had and then let my account expire. But I just checked and have reactivated the app and seem to still be able to access some stuff via applebox, and can watch those Oregon vids on my (android ) phone.
That's a start!

@vlrny@disabled.social avatar

@anniegreens double yay! I just discovered I can switch which local broadcaster I am affiliated with so am now with OPB and can access these Oregon series on my TV.

Plus it just feels like a nice refresh of a bunch of new shows I haven't explored yet.

Thanks for all the inspiration!

@vlrny lol that's so funny, welcome to Oregon (virtually)!

@anniegreens it's lovely here. 🌲⛰️💚

@vlrny My local libraries offer Kanopy and Biblioplus, both of which have a decent selection of documentaries. And they are free. Check your library.

@vlrny A $60 per year donation will grant you access to PBS Passport. Plenty of documentaries and more, plus it's supporting a good cause.

@vlrny no one has suggested Kodi and its youtube addon yet? It takes several steps to obtain the authentication keys, but after it's setup it works fine, with no ads.

Instructions for installing and setting up the addon and keys https://www.linuxbabe.com/raspberry-pi/kodi-youtube

@hyc not yet. Will bookmark this an snoop around next brain juice. Thanks.

Guidedoc often have interesting things...

dafilms.com has lots, too:

manyoyo,

@vlrny

Also (but haven't tried it yet):

And a new one I haven't seen before:

@vlrny@disabled.social avatar

@manyoyo cool. I will explore all this next brain juice. Thanks!

Starry1086,

@vlrny PBS App? I know you're in Canada so not sure if it'll work, but I know the first two shows you listed are probably there.

vlrny,
@vlrny@disabled.social avatar

@Starry1086 I am delighted to report I can access in Canada. When I gave them my money I could watch ALL THE SHOWS. It worked fine.

I cancelled my subscription but was reminded today there is still a decent amount of content you can still access for free.

@vlrny I haven't tried this app (Yattee) as I don't have the hardware but the site doing the recommendations has been helpful to me in the past. It does require a bit of configuration, so that might be a negative (personally, I'd prefer plug and play!).

@vlrny@disabled.social avatar

@doombunny cool. I will bookmark this and the next time YouTube really pisses me off I will use that rage to focus my brain on learning more about this angle.
Thanks!

SeekingDuck,

@vlrny Have you tried https://archive.org/

vlrny,
@vlrny@disabled.social avatar

@SeekingDuck Oh cool. I'd heard of it, but not explored.

I have found movies, and Seven Samurai plays, so this may have some tangential use if/when I do more of a laptop rather than app connection to my TV.

Interesting stuff, thanks!

@vlrny Kanopy has lots of cool documentaries. If you're a Disney+ subscriber, NatGeo has shows on there, too.

vlrny,
@vlrny@disabled.social avatar

@rochelle Oh Kanopy has apple and android apps. Yaaaas definitely worth exploring!

Amd thx for the Insider scoop re Disney+ I haven't engaged with that service yet, but it would definitely be better than 🤬 YouTube.

@vlrny I would suggest Curiosity Stream which if you find the right package, also comes with Nebula. Some of your fave creators on YouTube may even offer a code. I know that Joe Scott often does @purplepadma

@vlrny

I've had reasonable luck with YouTube in a Firefox session via a tab that is not logged in to any Google property (or anything else, really) and the Unhook browser extension.

You don't get recommendations or subscriptions but I consider that a feature and just bookmark videos and channels I care about.

_ohcoco_,
@_ohcoco_@mastodon.social avatar

@suetanvil @vlrny Unhook made youtube tolerable for me. It's so nice to have an uncluttered, focused experience :o)

I JUST WANNA NAP THROUGH SOME DOCS IN PEACE AND ACCIDENTALLY LEARN SOME COOL SHIT.

neversosimple,
@neversosimple@mstdn.social avatar

@vlrny Aw, you nap through docs too? 😄

vlrny,
@vlrny@disabled.social avatar

@neversosimple Best way to fill a day.

Oi! I am NOT doing nothing. I am resting my eyes and quietly osmosing knowledge.

I think that is efficient af.

neversosimple,
@neversosimple@mstdn.social avatar

@vlrny I do the same is what I'm saying 😄

vlrny,
@vlrny@disabled.social avatar

@neversosimple Oh yes!

That was aimed at imagined haters of efficient napping.

We are definitely on the same team re informative nappage. dozy high five

mike,

@vlrny @JustFrank Why can’t we hook ourselves up to a computer and download information like in the Matrix yet?

vlrny,
@vlrny@disabled.social avatar

@mike @JustFrank because we don't control the matrix...yet. ✊
