BeAware,

So, apparently when using an ActivityPub enabled service, you agree to have your data harvested for the sake of corporate profits.

This has been said ad nauseam the past couple days and I would like to get proof.

Can anyone actually find the text where this exists? Whether it be connected to activitypub documents or mastodon. I just wanna see it so it's not debated anymore.

I didn't really think this was the case, but I've been wrong PLENTY of times before.

kinyutaka,

@BeAware it's not an thing, it's a thing.

Because means sharing our toots, posts, videos, images, blog posts, etc, Threads is saying that it's okay for them to collect, analyze, utilize, and sell that data.

@kinyutaka

They're not saying that though.

@BeAware

BeAware,

@troed @kinyutaka they are, aren't they? I might be misinterpreting it though.

kinyutaka,

@BeAware @troed

Exactly, the bullet point even says that they intend to use it to deliver advertising.

The only way I can think of for Threads to push an ad at me is to tag either my username or a hashtag that I obviously follow, like .

But I would feel incredibly called out if someone posted "Hey, @kinyutaka, what do you think about these products."

@kinyutaka they’re not going to advertise to you. That’s not how Facebook’s ads work. If your post ends up on threads and a Threads user reads or replies to it, THEY might be more likely to see an ad about whatever topic you were talking about.

Well, Sheldon, I'm sure that there's no way for Meta to find out your personal information and share that data to link to your Facebook account or sell to data brokers to send you some good old fashioned spam.

It's especially problematic for those who don't have a Threads account, so they aren't even a party to the user agreement.

@kinyutaka is your name Kiny? How are they going to profile you if you aren’t an account on their system? How would they know your email?

I’m not even aware of Meta being involved in any kind of email marketing. They make plenty of money doing own platform ads and they don’t sell your info to others to sell ads on their network.

When I buy an ad, I specify loose demographics of people who will see it. I don’t get your info.

Facebook’s actually been frustratingly resistant to allow anyone to sniff more user info than they absolutely need. I’ve worked with their APIs. It used to be really loose and easy to connect dots with it. Not since Cambridge Analytica broke.

I used their APIs for legitimate purposes and it became so impossible to do anything with it on behalf of my own users that I just decided to drop a bunch of features.

@BeAware that’s some 20 year old bragging to his friends. He’s a dick to be sure, but my point is that the advertising doesn’t work the way people think it does. I buy lots of FB ads.

BeAware,

@sysop408 the point is, you're trusting Zuckerberg, who cannot be trusted, to NOT change the way ads work during this slow rollout specifically for this.

I'd venture as far to say that AI technology has jumped so much, that they could take our public facing profile data and compile them with the data they might already have and make a super profile on you. Then they don't need to sell you ads directly, they'll sell your info to advertisers who will use it elsewhere.

Everyone is being REALLY naive. its quite shocking. For awhile I thought that people across Fedi were really knowledgeable about these things and how far it could go. My hopes have been dashed.

@BeAware Facebook selling your data to third parties so they can directly market to you isn’t going to happen. That’d be akin to a restaurant giving away its secret recipes. They make money by selling targeted ads on their platform.

Selling your data would undercut their cash cow.
