timvandijck,

If you tried Lemmy but didn't like the ui, give Kbin a shot. It's federated with Lemmy so you can participate in the fastly growing community. https://kbin.social/

@timvandijck agreed, I like kbin’s UI much more than Lemmy’s, rough edges and all. (Because alpha)

    @NatureMC

    @timvandijck They are similar to reddit in that there are posts and replies. But also, it's federated and uses ActivityPub. (I am replying from kbin right now!)

    @NatureMC @rasterweb @timvandijck Have you ever used any kind of message board or forum before?

    If so, it’s like that.

    @NatureMC @rasterweb @timvandijck If you haven't, have you used anything with groups?

    Imagine an interface that shows a bunch of groups on different topics.

    In each group, there's a top-level post on a specific subtopic. You can create such a top-level post yourself if you want.

    If you click on one of those posts, you'll see all the replies to each of those top-level posts too. They'll be organised in such a way that you can fairly easily see who is replying to what, without having to find replies and threads by digging.

    Here's /m/3dPrinting, as seen from kbin, for example. The group is 3dPrinting and about 3D printing. Each rectangle is a top-level post within 3D printing, on different topics.

    @NatureMC @rasterweb @timvandijck And let's say we clock on "Beginners printer" to see replies to that particular post. Here's what that looks like. What you can't see here is that replies made to replies go underneath those replies, and get indented in a bit, so you can see that they are replies-to-replies rather than replies-to-original-posts.

    You can see all of this same stuff from mastodon too! But it won't be grouped and sorted like this, and if you want to find a particular old post, it'll be much harder.

    That's what the kbin/lemmy/reddit kind of interface is good for.

    timvandijck,

    @NatureMC Kbin and Lemmy are to Reddit what Mastodon is to Twitter.

    You pick an instance you like and you can follow communities from other instances as well.
