Mea culpa time — you might've heard that we're hacking away (in the best sense of the word) at #ActivityPub support in #NodeBB, but it turns out someone asked for it back in 2019 and it got zero buy-in from our founders 😥
@nodebb Great news. I am really impressed with nodebb. I have questions, but foremost among them is: what’s your best guess before you’re ready to beta an AP-compiant release?
@shoq that's a good question! The devil is in the details. The thing is, we could rush out a release that is very narrow in scope (e.g. ability to follow a category, or a one-way user follow relationship), but baseline expectation is to release a #MVP that contains the expected activities — follows, notes, boosts, reports...
I've been spending much of the past few weeks laying the groundwork, so hopefully I'll have more to show soon 🙂
@devnull Well, I’ve been waiting for this upgrade for a long time and would love to provide some feedback. If you’d like a very skilled and experienced tester, I’ve used (and helped design) forums for a long time. I’m a good cheerleader when they do it right, and a constructive critic when they don’t.
@shoq that would be very welcome and is much appreciated. At some point I'll have a private beta for testing.
The thing is I myself am very new to the #fediverse. There's a lot of nuance and expectations over how fediverse apps work, that #NodeBB ought to follow. There's a time and a place to push boundaries and break things, but I don't think that time is now 😉. Working with people experienced with the status quo would provide a good objective review.
@devnull There are lots of activityPub ninjas around who I am sure can help. I’m only an ex-hobbyist coder, but my concept and UI experience is formidable. @atomicpoet and I are bringing up an instance of NodeBB for study now. Perhaps after we get better acquainted, we can chat about the future. I see nodebb filling some big voids. The secret to doing that is the g-word: groups.
