I know this will lead to a heated debate, but I have to agree with @Gargron.

Having to pick an instance/server is cited as the biggest hurdle to joining Mastodon, and dismissing people who feel this way is just plain rude.

Yes, the registration flow for Mastodon should be user-friendly. And yes, we need to live up to the promises of decentralized social media. We just need to get creative about our approach.

@stefan @Gargron I disagree, because it prefers just one server. To simplify the regististration process you could also maintain a list of known trusted servers and randomly pick one, so that the user does not need to choose by himself.

eighthave,

@stefan @Gargron I've worked on #decentralized systems for many years now, including #XMPP clients, #Matrix, #Tor, and @fdroidorg and I think the new #Mastodon client onboarding experience is a good idea. But it also means there is a new slippery slope towards centralization, and it needs to be heeded and monitored to make sure it doesn't do more harm than good. The good news is that there are multiple, good clients, so that helps quite a bit.

@stefan @Gargron

So the official App, has the optipn as default to join the main Mastodon instance, how easy would it be to make a patch so that each instance hosting the app, can patch, so that the app they offer defaults to that instance.

For example if I download the app from qoto, or follow a link from qoto, then it would download the patched version for that instance.

@zleap Definitely an interesting idea!

@stefan

Cool, thanks, I lack the technical skills for this but if we can throw ideas around maybe a good solution can be found.

Out of interest how to other fedi services address this issue >

@zleap Ah, sorry, I wouldn't really know.

Maybe @fediversereport might have some insight?

That text is "corporate speak" at its worst. Precisely the "sound" that makes one realize instantly that we are now being treated as a commodity, and being talked to, no longer talked with. Sad, and disappointing. Trust is being destroyed here.

For example, and I believe this is being looked into, migrating to another instance needs to be easier by carrying over your posts.

Also, large instances should actively encourage their users to consider switching to a smaller instance.

I'm sure smarter people than me can come up with more examples.
