The fire extinguisher is empty, since years, and you know it. You are saved by people helping you extinguish the flames. They help you because you helped them, and don't remember they exist only in a moment of disaster.

Afterwards, they tell you to not foolishly press the handle on an empty fire extinguisher, in the hope it will magically extinguish the flames because it simply "has to".

You get angry because how dare they criticize a fire extinguisher.

Okay, this might sound weird, but this is what I'm thinking of today. I'm assuming most of you know the idiom, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." I know it's about looking at the horse's teeth to check it's age and health, but in my heart I have an alternate history where it's about The Trojan Horse, which doesn't really even make much sense, but it's still living there rent free.

So, does anyone else do this, make up alternate histories for words or phrases? If you do, I'd love examples!

Whoops sorry about that interruption, there was an additional setting required which i did not expect.

I have adjusted the redis setup for this instance, which – fingers crossed – means that your timeline won't fall back to an old (or empty) state anymore as soon as redis was restarted. The setup is now one persistent and one "cache" redis as recommended by the docs. There must have been a misunderstanding in the past. Sorry about that. :tchncs:

Help! Is there anyone who can explain to me what the cultural significance of the phrase "Carl seinem Gretchen" might be in Vienna in about 1870? I understand what the words mean, but there’s some cultural reference I’m missing, I think.

It's not a complete phrase, either, and as a partial one, in isolation it does not seem to make a lot of sense to me, as a native speaker of German. Nothing rings a bell - could you give some more context?

If you are sure the actual recipient isn't named Gretchen, it might very well be an allusion to Goethe's Faust.

Gretchen receives jewelry twice from Faust (arranged by Mephisto). The first time, she gives it to her mother, who passes it on to a priest. The second time, her neighbor convinces her to keep and to wear it, secretly.

Since in the end, Faust absolutely ruins Gretchen, the ring might be a remarkably ironic present.

@andrewstroehlein If so, my guess would be that the actual recipient wasn't a very young girl when she received that present, because this type of an ironic present would IMHO require a mature person being able to handle such a cultural "tongue-in-cheek" reference. It would be a bit nasty to give such a ring to a young girl.
