    @atomicpoet @fediversenews After being banned for reporting a conspiracy theory / disinformation sub on Reddit, I’m looking for a replacement. Thank you!

    A mashup of Mastodon and /kbin and WordPress would be killer software for every journalistic outlet. Every article that lives permanently on their site also automatically flows into the social web and allows for the best commenting system so far devised.

    oigreslima,

    @wjmaggos @atomicpoet @fediversenews This gave me a great idea for my blog running Pelikan. Thanks

    @wjmaggos @atomicpoet @fediversenews I wonder how well WriteFreely will work for this case once they add support for incoming replies. (Currently it's publish only, having grown out of the write.as/reply.as/snap.as set of one-thing-well websites, but they mentioned planning to integrate the capabilities going forward)

    @atomicpoet @Rachel_Thorn @fediversenews My hot take: a federated Reddit clone should do away with or significantly change the upvote/downvote mechanism. It’s not unlike quote tweets to Twitter in that it’s a magnifier of toxicity and IMHO plays a big role in Reddit’s unique awfulness.

    KelsonV,
    @KelsonV@wandering.shop avatar

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews So, same concept as Lemmy. I wonder how well they currently federate with each other

    What Features does ActivityPub enable on Kbin? How does this connection playout in terms of user experiance?

    cragsand,

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews Do they have a repository where you can submit bug reports or suggestions?
    I can't seem to find any. I found one repo on GitHub but it has issues disabled. 🤔

    I made a test "subreddit" aka "magazine" named https://kbin.social/m/thegoldengator

    To kind of mirror the subreddit I run over on https://www.reddit.com/r/thegoldengator/ but content isn't displayed in a good way.

    YouTube videos and Twitch Clips aren't embedded properly nor image thumbnails presented in a decent way. It seems to fit them vertically then crop excess weirdly which makes all posts look bad.

    All understandable if it's an early beta or alpha. Very curious about this and to see how it develops! :fedi:

    @Twitter_expat @Twitter_expat You're right, I noticed the problem too. There's still a lot to optimize, but my 6EUR VPS is doing what it can... and it has an unusually large number of unannounced visitors today ;) I'm out of home today, but I'm monitoring the situation as much as possible and I will adjust the queue parameters if necessary.

    @fediversenews @atomicpoet

    bannedvibes,

    @ernest @fediversenews @atomicpoet when it comes to forums with votes, stackexchange replaced forums more than discord for me. I don't use reddit (unless it's in search results). Is there a fediverse alternative to stackexchange or quora?

    They prepare an app as well.

    Homebrewandhacking,

    @atomicpoet I have checked out the link, but this seems to be an aggregator site?
    I have no idea it is so confusing. I tried to get the link copied into Mastodon, and what it showed was that the post is not from kbin but from beehaw.org?

    I have no clue what's going on here.

    @jakob yeah well that's not what I'd expect when going to a website... to see content from other websites.

    When I see my own home feed, I want to see everyone I from follow, from all the different services.

    When I go to the website of an instance, I want to see what's on that instance. For what other reason would I go to that specific instance?

    colinsmatt11,
    @colinsmatt11@gleasonator.com avatar

    @nicemicro @jakob I haven't used kbin but I assume there is local only option like lemmy

    ernest,
    ernest avatar

    @colinsmatt11 Technically, such an option exists, but I have recently made some changes to the database structure and it is currently blocked. It will be available in the sidebar options by the end of the week. I think it should be up to the administrator to decide whether the main or local feed is enabled by default. kbin.social has only been up for a few days, so it would be completely empty there.

    @fediversenews @atomicpoet @nicemicro @jakob

    @nicemicro@fosstodon.org avatar

    @ernest Thank you for the reply!

    Apparently, the newer versionMastodon (or at least Fosstodon) also defaults to showing "Explore" on the main page. In general, I preferred when going to an instance website directly, I see what's up on the instance. When I want to see the whole Fediverse, I look at my timeline, or search stuff from there.

    The only reason to directly go to an instance website imo is to see what the users there post.

    Rycaut,
    @Rycaut@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews the challenge for anything to “kill” a given established social network/site like Reddit is not technical - it is primarily social. Is there a sufficient critical mass of people interested in the same topic (especially if obscure) who are also a) aware of the new site b) engaged enough with that new site that they could see a given post c) actually see and respond to your specific post in a way that is respectful and encourages positive response not escalation

    alabut,
    @alabut@techhub.social avatar

    @Rycaut @atomicpoet @fediversenews exactly right — a competing new thing has to be much better than an established incumbent, not just replicate existing features and sprinkle a bit of “but it’s open!” on top.

    ernest,
    ernest avatar

    @alabut I agree with that, and I also believe it is important to have solid foundations to build on. The project is at a very early stage. I just need more time, and kbin will definitely be something more, without any compromises.

    @Sbectol A short guide to the platform with a description of how federation works here and what interactions with other platforms look like will be prepared by the end of the week. If you allow, I will call you then ;)

    @fediversenews @atomicpoet

    jakob,

    @atomicpoet it seems, it federates with lemmy. The first postings i checked are all from several lemmy-communities.

    👍

    marco,

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews feels for me more like digg.com from way back

    gstml,

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews you can’t kill Reddit if don’t have the same huge user base (what makes a piece of junk like Reddit invaluably relevant). But you can play with the idea.

    jectoons,

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews How do you go about logging in to it with your fedi account?

    jakob,

    @jectoons

    It's not your fedi-account, it's your hometown-account.

    So you can login to your (and only your) hometown-instance.

    But you can search for a community or posting (the url) in your hometown, and then comment, like and share from there...

    As in the rest of the fediverse too.

    If you want to use /kbin full featured, you have to create an account there. As in the rest of the fediverse too.

    @atomicpoet

    jectoons,

    @jakob @atomicpoet Right. I was kind of hoping to be able to somehow "link" them, at least in this instance, since it seems redundant to have multiple fedi accounts when the content for one can show in federated feeds (sometimes). Thanks for your reply!

    gogobonobo,

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews Is /kbin compatible with Lemmy? They look quite similar.

    ernest,
    ernest avatar

    @gogobonobo Yes, it's compatible. In addition, it also has a microblogging section where you can find posts from other platforms, which is something that was missing in Lemmy.

    @fediversenews @atomicpoet

    KarlHeinzHasliP,

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews

    So the one thing I don't understand is why the Fediverse platforms all still require email registration for login. Would be sooo much smoother if I could use this Fedi Account to sign up to others (Google ID UX).

    While I get having 2-3 separate logins with separate admins, I'm looking at dozens of fediverse apps. Being disjointed is more of a problem than having my ID centralized with climatejustice.social would be any time soon.

    dmitri,

    @KarlHeinzHasliP @atomicpoet @fediversenews "So the one thing I don't understand is why the Fediverse platforms all still require email registration for login. Would be sooo much smoother if I could use this Fedi Account to sign up to others (Google ID UX). " <- I wonder the same thing, constantly! My guess is, it's the usual reason - lack of documentation and easy default settings on software. I think many devs (or server admins) just don't know it's an option.

    gabboman,

    @atomicpoet@fediversenews@venera.social what would you need me to update to make one of my thingy haha.
