Something happening on the Invasion of Live Threads over on - users are rapidly embracing links, and there is a demand for it as a viable alternative.

Given how much these mega-threads have relied on the Bird Site for updates over the last 17 months, this is a very significant development. If all the main accounts end up on here, Twitter may lose its monopoly in this regard.

sentient_water,

@alexanderhay It already lost a lot of climate scientists. They arrived en masse after receiving a flood of threats.

alexanderhay,
@alexanderhay@mastodon.social avatar

@sentient_water That does not surprise me, sadly. I know at least one American meteorologist who's recently dusted off their old account here after quitting their job (and the Birdsite), following one dogpile too many.

@alexanderhay would be neat to see the Ukrainian govt push hard on establishing mastodon instances. Would be a nice home for all those invested in the struggle for peace/democracy/freedom.

Cbukszpan,

@alexanderhay that would be good especially given how much musk has jerked the Ukrainians around with skylink

Tantrano,

@alexanderhay

I will definitely keep posting Mastodon links there(I'm u/theawesomedanish btw), I can honestly say that going to Mastodon has done wonders for my mental health compared with finding stuff on Twitter. All the negativity by vatniks on Twitter is exhausting.

Now I only drop in on Twitter once in a while(funnily enough when some bird.makeup replicate posts something I want to reply to)
But yes Elon just keep shooting himself in the foot with every step he takes 😂

alexanderhay,
@alexanderhay@mastodon.social avatar

@Tantrano He is a truly appalling little man-child.

heldenhirn,

@alexanderhay
That's exactly why I came back here to mastodon today. I'm having a hard time finding accounts who share Ukraine news though.

@heldenhirn @alexanderhay For what it's worth, I've been posting all the UKR news stories I post to Twitter over here, and when I can, some of the Twitter retweets here as well; beginning to find folks like @noelreports over here as well. Recommend following some of the hashtags like and for more posts

@hongrun @heldenhirn @alexanderhay
I recommend Joanne Stocker-Kelly @joannekelly for excellent daily Ukraine war summaries with source links

@alexanderhay

I just tried to log into twitter and I can log in, but there's no feed and no search results. Something major happened.

ashiisbest,

@alexanderhay woa, where'd you see that??

alexanderhay,
@alexanderhay@mastodon.social avatar
SergeantScar,

@alexanderhay I'd love to see a lot of those folks I follow on the other one make the move here..

FlyingPurplePeoplePleaser,

@alexanderhay I'm a recent emigrant of Reddit over their API changes. I lost Apollo and I'm actively trying to not go back to Reddit.

Not being able to follow the coverage of the Russian invasion as easily was my biggest frustration in leaving. What are the best sources on Mastodon to follow the war?

alexanderhay,
@alexanderhay@mastodon.social avatar

@FlyingPurplePeoplePleaser The thread that replies to my original post is full of suggested accounts to follow, but hashtags are also very fruitful - like or and . Here's a longer list of them, fittingly on Reddit:

https://old.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/14oegta/rworldnews_live_thread_russian_invasion_of/jqfopca/

AxeAkane,

standards people, we need standards!

Kotking,
@Kotking@mastodon.social avatar

@alexanderhay Well musk Did a big no no and Twitter gone to hell. IF artists leave twitter for Mastodon services it tells alot. Twitter limits on amount you can view+ self ddos+ you can only view logged in. So Yeah 300k in 2 days joined Masto. Poor Mastodon barely worked today.

acousticmirror,
@acousticmirror@post.lurk.org avatar

@alexanderhay I wonder if kbin might eventually lure them in. (I have the feeling the main lemmy instance is a little pro-Russian, but this is just an impression I've got). Or is Reddit still necessary?

alexanderhay,
@alexanderhay@mastodon.social avatar

@acousticmirror Reddit is still accessible, and the sort of forum everyone still visits, out of habit and because it's been a reliable news source for the war thusfar. If, however, Reddit does a Twitter and makes it impossible to read the mega threads without logging in, then perhaps Lemmy and KBin will have their moment.

Hyperreality,

Kbin's allowing me to follow, read, reply to and boost your toots without logging in to or even visiting mastodon.

Like using the instagram app to retweet stuff, once you realise that kind of thing's possible in the fediverse(mastodon, kbin, lemmy, pixelfed, ... they're all linked), you get annoyed realising it could be possible back on twitter/reddit/insta/snapchat/youtube/.... They just chose to not give us that freedom.

doofys,

@alexanderhay it's really taken off on Reddits world news thread about the Ukrsine war.

Elon blocking links to people not being signed up was the straw that broke the camels back.

A lot of readers for various reason refuse to sign up to Twitter, so regular posters of news moved to Mastodon.

IamBen,

@doofys @alexanderhay I've just made my first mastadon linked post. I see people complaining on r/Ukraine they can't open twitter links.
