If everyone had to install 11 themselves from scratch, they would absolutely switch to .

Jesus, this takes FOREVER.

@killyourfm probably because Windows 11 is so bloated, I couldn't believe that ISO size

cameronbosch,

@killyourfm Heck, even some distros that use Calamares (like my current daily driver EndeavourOS) are so much easier than Windows 11! (EndeavourOS does disable Bluetooth by default on a freshly-installed system, but it's literally a one line command to re-enable it.) And I'll take that over the spyware that is Windows 11 any day!

    @dhaavi oh yea those options rock. But any kind of real world testing, I always install to the metal.

    @killyourfm I remember my first time installing any Linux distro: "wait, it's done already!?" 🤯

    Lilyana,

    @killyourfm I rather use Linux.

    @killyourfm I have had this issue with Windows 10 and Fedora 37. If I had been in Windows 10 I'd have do go back in and turn off the wifi then restart into Fedora. I haven't noticed it yet since upgrading to Fedora 38.

    killyourfm,

    And apparently Windows 11 makes it even more frustrating to dual-boot with .

    In my experience anyway, both and couldn't see my PC's Wifi module until I booted into Windows 11, enabled Hibernation, and then disabled Fast Startup.

    ???

    writeblankspace,
    @writeblankspace@fosstodon.org avatar

    @killyourfm Same issue with me, except on Ubuntu and EndeavourOS

    killyourfm,
    @killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

    @writeblankspace Is this a widely known issue? I'm just wondering if new Linux users might need to hear this.

    AdamBishop,
    @AdamBishop@floss.social avatar

    @killyourfm @writeblankspace I've always believed it necessary to disable Fast Startup on a dual-boot. Whether on Windows 11 or 10.

    killyourfm,
    @killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

    @AdamBishop @writeblankspace I just had no clue it was so hidden in Windows 11. (Having to go into CMD and enable Hibernate first).

    I could be wrong.

    AdamBishop,
    @AdamBishop@floss.social avatar

    @killyourfm @writeblankspace I'm sure it is more hidden than before! 😅 Tut, tut, tut MS 😅

    @killyourfm Dunno, tried searching it up but got lots of jargon. Not much of an expert with troubleshooting with hardware. Anyways, I find that EndeavourOS and Win11 play slightly nicer and the issue doesn't happen as often unless my laptop came from a long sleep.

    For some people though, they'll find it rather annoying, and, like me, might not be able to understand how to fix it.

    @canrith@corteximplant.com avatar

    @killyourfm I have a dual-boot Pop!_OS/Windows11 notebook and... yes... it's a pain

    mroy,

    @killyourfm Wouldn't it work if you just disabled Fast Boot support in your BIOS?

    killyourfm,
    @killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

    @mroy I tried that, no dice.

    ManuelBoe,

    @killyourfm I installed windows 11 in a VM because I had to use a piece of proprietary software. After hours of installation, you get spammed with thousands of questions.

    Who thinks an installation of Windows is done in half an hour or less will be surprised. It took me about three hours to get a usable system.

    @kerfuffle@mastodon.online avatar

    @killyourfm
    I have plain Ubuntu 23 without any Windows dualboot and it too struggles with finding my WiFi module, I'm afraid. From what I've read, that too is due to Fast Startup.

    syn,
    @syn@ohai.social avatar

    @killyourfm that's if Microsoft will even let you install it (all my computers are "too old")

    killyourfm,
    @killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

    @syn Yea, that little fact is seriously terrible. It must have generated so much e-waste.

    FartsMusically,

    @killyourfm weird because 10 isn't even that much of a slog. Wonder what the deal is. Shit's gotten better since Vista pretty consistently.

    Installation, anyway. The rest, I dunno.

    killyourfm,
    @killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

    @FartsMusically It's a better installer, technically. But the amount of upselling for various Microsoft services and Windows options is borderline absurd now.

    xerz,
    @xerz@fedi.xerz.one avatar

    @killyourfm Yet another evidence that what Linux lacks is OEM interest.

    FartsMusically,

    @xerz @killyourfm what Linux lacks is a Microsoft to lobby billions of dollars on its behalf on marketing deals and subsidies for game studios and hardware manufacturers.

    ...tap

    "That's you!"

    IBM: fuck off! Find another cow!

    killyourfm,
    @killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

    @FartsMusically @xerz In a slightly altered timeline, that cash cow is Valve.

    FartsMusically,

    @killyourfm @xerz and Al Gore won the 01 election. I'm aware of that universe. I hope to go there some day. They say Conan is still a Simpsons writer over there.
